More Tips for Managing Social Media at Home
If you feel like you’re constantly negotiating screen time… you’re not alone. Social media is designed to be addictive, and many of us are fighting a system that wasn’t built with kids (or parents) in mind.
Here are 5 lesser-known strategies that actually work:
- Don’t just say no - replace it.
Banning Instagram won’t work if it’s all your child does for fun. Help them find something better: a sport, club, hobby, job, or creative outlet that brings real-world joy and purpose. - Create “device-neutral” zones.
Instead of just limiting screen time, set areas in the house (like the kitchen or car) where no one (including adults) is on a screen. These shared spaces promote conversation and presence. - Talk about the “algorithm.”
Teach your child how social media works - how the algorithm is designed to keep them scrolling. When they understand the trick, they’re less likely to fall for it. - Set up a Family Media Agreement - together.
Instead of handing down rules, co-create a plan. What are your family’s values? What’s allowed during homework time, meals, bedtime? Kids buy in more when they help make the rules. - Watch with them sometimes.
Instead of always monitoring from a distance, occasionally sit down and scroll with them. Ask questions. Get curious. It builds trust - and helps you understand what they’re seeing.
