The latest sporting news from Devonport High School for Boys
Welcome
Welcome to the first edition of the DHSB Sport Newsletter. Each term we intend to keep you updated with the endeavours of school teams, individual performances and extra-curricular clubs and activities. Due to the large number of activities taking place we may occasionally miss something but if this is brought to our attention we can include it in the next publication. The following is a summary of the terms work to date;
Year 7 Football Team
We have had over 70 students at Year 7 football training since our first session in September. They started the year with an excellent 2-0 away win against South Dartmoor in the National Cup. Their next match was in the Devon Cup against Uffculme School and the boys were fantastic in a 5-2 victory. Unfortunately, they were knocked out of the National Cup against Torquay Boys Grammar School but are now looking forward to their next fixture in the Devon Cup.
Year 8 Football Team
U13 Football:
Following the disappointment of a penalties defeat in the Plymouth Cup final last year the U13 football team have started the season particularly strongly. The boys are currently unbeaten in all matches and they have progressed to the 5th round of the National Cup where they will face St Peters CE High School, 2nd round of the Devon Cup against Tiverton High and remain in the Plymouth Cup where they will play Plymstock.
Year 9 Football Team
Year 9 started the year by beating Saltash 10-3 in the National Cup. They also beat Torbridge in the Plymouth Cup with an impressive 8-1 victory. They were knocked out of the National Cup after losing 3-2 to Tavistock but bounced back in their next Devon Cup match to beat Okehampton 5-1.
Year 10 Football Team
Year 11 Football Team
Year 11 remain unbeaten so far this term with 5 wins from 5. Highlights include a 1-0 victory against Plymstock school and a 4-2 win on penalties against Penryn College in the National schools cup.
The team have also progressed in the Devon Cup after an outstanding 6-3 victory against St Peters School Exeter.
1st XI
DHSB A
After losing heavily in their first game of the season the first XI are now third in the table after wins against BRNC Dartmouth, City Police and Plymouth University. They have also had two excellent Cup wins against Marjons and Plymouth Dukes 'B'.
Year 7 Rugby
Year 8 Rugby
The boys were very competitive each week and provided an opportunity for lots of squad rotation to help people develop their game.
They lost to Kingsbridge in a friendly - which was a very competitive game and proved useful to the players.
They won the Plymouth schools festival - although technically they are not allowed to win at rugby until U14 age group. The team played really well all day and won all of their matches and only conceded two tries.
Year 9 Rugby
The 9 rugby team have enjoyed a successful season so far and remain unbeaten. In November the team won the Cunningham cup and remained undefeated winning all 9 games. They are int he final of the West Devon Cup and will play Ivybridge after Christmas.
Year 10 Rugby
The U15 rugby side have enjoyed a successful term competing in the NatWest Vase and local competitions. In the Vase they beat Eggbuckland, Fowey and Richard Lander schools before losing to a strong Uffculme side.
In the west Devon Cup they played Plymouth College and won 17-10 and are through to the Final
Year 11 Rugby
1st XV Rugby
The 1st XV have played several fixtures this year so far and the notable achievement was a 20 points victory over Mount Kelly.
U14 Badminton
The U14 team won the Plymouth Schools competition, beating Stoke Damerel, Heles School and Torbridge High. The U16 badminton team also won all of their fixtures in their pool and have qualified for the Devon Finals along with the other two age groups.
U19 Badminton
The U19 team finished as Plymouth Schools Runners up, beating Lipson and Torbridge but losing to the eventual winners Plymstock.
Plymouth Schools Cross country
A cold and wet Central Park was the venue for this years Plymouth schools’ cross country championships. A notoriously hilly course saw 30 DHSB students perform superbly. Jamie Williams took home a silver medal in the senior boys race with Harry Edwards narrowly missing out on a medal to finish 4th in the intermediate. As a result, 9 of our students have been selected to represent the City at the County Schools finals in January.
Golf Club
Following its inclusion in our extra curricular clubs last year, golf has continued this term. We are fortunate to have formed a strong link with Boringdon Park Golf Course and our boys get lessons and on course coaching throughout the week. They also will taking part in the schools first ever golf fixture vs Plymouth College at the end of term.
