AUSD CONNECTION
NEWS FROM ALHAMBRA UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT

Message from the Superintendent
Dear AUSD Community,
One of the most powerful elements of our schools is the voice of our students. Across our campuses, we see student voices in action every day. From classroom conversations and campus initiatives to formal leadership opportunities like ASB and PLUS (Peer Leaders Uniting Students).
For as long as I can remember, our ASB leaders have played a vital role in giving students a platform to share ideas, plan activities, and represent their peers in school level decisions. Building on this strong foundation, our site PLUS teams continue to foster inclusion, connection, and support, and help to create a stronger, more welcoming school climate.
But perhaps the most direct example of student voice guiding district-level conversations is through our Student Advisory Council (SAC) and Student Board Member. This year’s SAC has demonstrated exceptional leadership, insight, and dedication as they engaged in meaningful dialogue with each other and with district leaders. They offered thoughtful perspectives that reflect the diverse experiences of their peers. Their input has helped inform district decisions and kept us grounded in what matters most: our students. Since adding a Student Board Member two years ago, we have benefited greatly from having a consistent student perspective at our Board meetings. This role has further empowered students to help shape policy and decision-making at the highest level.
As we approach the May 20th Board of Education meeting, we look forward to formally recognizing the outstanding work of this year’s SAC members. It has been a true joy for our Board members and district administrators to watch these student leaders grow in confidence, ability, and purpose. Their insightful contributions and willingness to speak up have made a real difference. I am sincerely grateful to each member for their time, dedication, and energy.
I would like to give a special acknowledgement to our graduating seniors (Madison Kang, Yingjie Liang, and Michelle Lim). Each one has left a meaningful mark on our district, and we are so proud of all they’ve accomplished. As sad as we are to see our senior SAC members leave us, we are also excited for the future. Elections for next year’s Student Advisory Council are currently underway, and it’s inspiring to see so many students eager to step into leadership roles and continue building on the legacy of those before them.
Student voice is an essential part of how we do business in AUSD. It reminds us to stay student-centered in all we do, and it strengthens our schools in ways that are both visible and lasting. Student leadership is not limited to titles or official positions. Students advocate for themselves and their peers in both big and small ways. Thank you to our outgoing student leaders, and welcome to those who will soon step into these vital roles. Every voice matters, and every action contributes to a healthier, more inclusive school community.
Warm Regards,
Denise R. Jaramillo, Ed.D.
Superintendent
Featured Event: "Be The Change" Fellowship Summit
As part of National Distracted Driving Awareness Month, AUSD partnered with Impact Teen Drivers, California Highway Patrol, Office of Traffic Safety, and the California Department of Public Health to host the 2025 “Be The Change” Fellowship Summit at East LA College. Over 100 AUSD students gathered for a day of learning, leadership, and advocacy in order to raise awareness of the #1 cause of teen fatalities: car crashes! From interactive activities to powerful peer-to-peer discussions, these students learned how to use Positive Community Norming to advocate for safer roadways and to encourage their peers to be safer drivers and passengers. We look forward to seeing how they will use their new-found knowledge to benefit their schools and community. (Photo Credit: AUSD Communications Interns Suna Kwan and Karlie Yonemoto)

LITTLE BITS OF GOOD NEWS & INFORMATION FROM AROUND THE DISTRICT
(Visit our social media platforms to see additional photos of many of these events/activities.)
Ynez School had an exciting visit on March 25th from Clippers Alumni Craig Smith as part of the Clippers Read to Achieve Program. Smith read from his children’s book, Craig and his Magical Basketball with the assistance of four Ynez student readers. The students received t-shirts, player promotional cards, wristbands and pencils from the Clippers. Students also had the opportunity to get an autograph from Smith and to pose with him for photos.
Ramona School hosted an anti-bias panel assembly on April 9th, featuring AUSD high school students who courageously shared their personal experiences. Their stories offered valuable insights that challenged the educators to reflect on how they can ensure all students feel supported and valued at school. They were also joined by staff from Ynez School for this panel. Both schools appreciated the student speakers for reminding them of the importance of fostering a safe, inclusive environment for everyone.
On April 10th, Monterey Highlands School received a visit from Polly the Cow from the Dairy Council of California. Through the Mobile Dairy Classroom, the students learned all about cows, farming, and agriculture. Farmer Myra from Old Grove Orange Farm was also present to teach about locally grown produce and how food gets from the farm to our tables. Students were also able to “shop” for produce at the mini farmer’s market. These assemblies were in conjunction with AUSD’s FNS Farm to School Program.
On April 19th, AUSD representatives joined with other LA County CTE teachers and students to celebrate the best of the best in Career Technology Education. Congratulations to Aiden Chan, MKHS senior, who won a $2,000 Wood Technology scholarship, which he will use next year as he continues his education, studying business and engineering. His teacher, Mr. Paul Lam (who teaches Wood Technology at Keppel) was also honored as the High School Teacher of the Year. Both recognitions were by the Los Angeles County Industrial and Technology Education Association (LACITEA).
Sixth-grade students across AUSD were able to enjoy three amazing days at Science Camp at Camp Pollock. This engaging and fun learning experience made memories that will last for a lifetime! Thank you to Park School for sharing photos of their exciting time!
At the April 8th Board Meeting, Northrup School showcased their Gladiator Clubs. These clubs were established to promote student engagement, foster a sense of belonging, and extend learning beyond the classroom. Each one is student-led, based on student interests, and supported by a designated staff advisor. The students shared personal reflections and key highlights from their participation in various clubs. They discussed the inspiration behind each club and provided updates on their development and impact.
Brightwood School is continuing the tradition of giving to the local Rotary Club and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA). Seventh-grade teacher Tina Young brought her students' Thousand Cranes art projects, which will be given to CHLA along with the proceedsfrom Joseph “Peppy” Sciarra’s annual fundraiser. Peppy, now 100 years young, has raised a total of $141,200 in gratitude to CHLA for its life-saving care for his son decades ago. Brightwood eighth grader Kaitlyn Hui also continued her charity project of selling handmade crocheted flowers and animals and added an $1,200 to the CHLA donation. The donations, along with a generous $5,000 contribution from the Alhambra & Monterey Park (AMP) Rotary Club, underscores the organization’s ongoing commitment to CHLA’s mission and its admiration for Peppy and all he has brought to the community.
AUSD Board Member Ken Tang and Superintendent Dr. Denise Jaramillo headed to Paris Baguette in San Gabriel on April 20th to show their appreciation for all they do for our schools, especially for students in our LIFT program. Paris Baguette has been a generous donor to many of our school sites, but more importantly, they are one of our major partners who provides employment opportunities for students in our LIFT program, helping them to learn real-world skills to become productive workers now and in the future. Thank you to Jason Kim, Joanna Quach, and all the amazing staff members for their kindness and generosity.
The AUSD Excellence in Leadership Award has been expanded to include district directors. The first one to be recognized is Mrs. Christa Van Orden, AUSD's Director of Elementary Education. Brightwood School held a “Pie the Principal and Asst. Principal" assembly on April 28th to celebrate meeting their PTA Dance-a-Thon fundraising goal. The school raised approximately $65,000. Way to go, Brightwood Bengals!
On April 26th Assemblymember Mike Fong celebrated his 2025 “Women of Impact.” Among the 12 honorees were two recipients from Alhambra High School: junior Keiko Rakin (recognized as this year’s Emerging Leader) and teacher Karen Jacobson (recognized as one of the Education honorees). Keiko is a two-year member of AUSD’s Student Advisory Council, of which she is currently the chairperson. She also serves as the AUSD 24-25 Student Board Member. In addition to being a dedicated teacher, Ms. Jacobson is key to the success of AHS’ Dream Center, where she guides and supports our immigrant and marginalized students. Congratulations to both Ms. Jacobson and Keiko for these well-deserved recognitions!
