Eagle Express
February 5-9, 2024
Principal's Corner
Eagles,
Non nobis solum nati sumus. "Not for ourselves alone are we born." is the motto of Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, colloquially known as the first university in the West. The motto comes from Marcus Tullius Cicero, a pillar of Roman intellect and eloquence, who championed principles that resonate profoundly with our mission here at Woodlawn Academy.
Marcus Tullius Cicero, an eminent Roman figure, played multiple roles as a statesman, attorney, academic, philosopher, and author, striving to maintain high standards amidst the political turmoil that let to the rise of the Roman Empire. His impact on the Latin language was profound, contributing to more than three-quarters of the surviving Latin literature from his era. Cicero advocated for the restoration of the Roman Republic during the civil unrest of Julius Caesar's reign and later opposed Mark Antony, leading to his designation as an enemy of the state and execution.
Cicero's life was a testament to the power of ideas and the spirit of learning. In an era marked by political upheaval, he stood as a champion of humanism, advocating for a government that serves its people and every individual's inherent rights and dignity. His contributions laid foundational stones for the Enlightenment, influencing thinkers who shaped the modern world.
Yet, Cicero's wisdom was nearly lost to history, a stark reminder of the fragility of knowledge. It was only through the relentless pursuit of understanding by scholars of the Renaissance that his works were revived, igniting the flames of the Enlightenment. This underscores a profound truth: knowledge and ideas require constant stewardship. Without the curious mind's quest for understanding, the lessons of the past can fade into oblivion, robbing future generations of invaluable wisdom.
As members of the Woodlawn community, we are caretakers of this legacy. Our commitment to learning and knowing goes beyond personal enrichment; it serves the greater community. Each lesson we impart, each fact we uncover, and each idea we nurture contributes to a collective human knowledge.
Cicero's philosophy also reminds us of the interconnectedness of our destinies. We are not isolated; our lives are interwoven in relationships, communities, and shared futures. Our learning is not solitary but a communal endeavor to uplift ourselves and those around us. We foster an environment where every student, teacher, and parent becomes a catalyst for mutual growth and Enlightenment.
As we navigate our educational journey, let us carry Cicero's torch, illuminating the path for ourselves and others. Because "Not for ourselves alone are we born."
Cheers!

Learning
Differentiation
One key aspect in the IB Framework approaches to teaching is differentiation. Our model tasks our educators to "remove barriers to learning to enable every student to develop, pursue and achieve challenging personal learning goals."
Another simple definition for differentiation would be "tailoring instruction to meet individual needs". Teachers can modify the:
- content
- process
- product
- learning environment

Visual Arts
Students in visual arts work at their own pace completing projects with different mediums, processes, and using different resources to learn technique and practice skill.
Strategies & Resources
The IB Framework believes that teachers ought to "use multiple technologies to aid and extend learning and teaching" as well as "Teachers consider learner variability when planning students’ personal learning goals."
Below students work using digital models to observe the relationships between the Earth-Sun-Moon.
Students also work with digital platforms to learn vocabulary and demonstrate their understanding.
Anchor charts and student made posters support student learning. They function for students to show their learning, and later, a reference tool when they are stuck.
