Countdown to Kindergarten
Oak Hills Elementary School
August 29, 2022 (Second Edition)
Welcome to Kindergarten at Oak Hills Elementary School! We are officially a week away from the first day of school here at Oak Hills. As a reminder, kindergarten follows an adjusted schedule, allowing for additional time to connect with families and become familiar with the school environment.
Today, you will receive a welcome letter from your child's teacher. In this letter, you will learn more about a Kindergarten Meet & Greet opportunity that is a scheduled time for your child to meet with the teacher and see the classroom space before the first day of learning. Please contact the school office or email the teacher directly if you run into any difficulty with scheduling. We are here to help!
We look forward to meeting you and working with your family over the next several years during your time at Oak Hills! You are joining a lovely school community and we couldn't be more excited to welcome you!

Student ID Number
Once enrolled, your child will be assigned a Student ID Number. This number will follow them through the duration of their schooling (K-12) within the Beaverton School District. This number will not change if your child moves from one school to another within Beaverton School District.
Your child will use their Student ID Number to purchase meals from the cafeteria and check out library books in at the elementary level. In middle and high, students will use this ID to check out text books, for locker assignments, class scheduling, etc.
IMPORTANT! Please help your child practice and learn their Student ID Number. Also, please keep your child's Student ID Number handy. You may consider saving it as a contact within your phone or storing it securely in a place that is accessible if needed.

Apply for Free/Reduced Price Meal Benefits
Please consider applying if you feel your family may qualify for free or reduced price meal benefits. It is confidential, school staff have no way of knowing which students receive meal benefits and which students do not. Beyond meals, there are MANY benefits to students, families, and school funding.
The household income requirements have changed: As an example, a family of four can have a total household income of up to $83,249 and qualify for meal benefits.
A meal benefits application can be completed online on our app SCHOOL CAFE, an account will need to be set up. Make sure to apply during summer since applications expire at the end of June each school year. We highly recommend that families apply! For more information on meal benefits, please visit the Meal Benefits webpage.

Kindergarten FAQ
Can we walk our child to the classroom on the first day of school?
Families are welcome to visit the kindergarten classrooms during Kindergarten Meet & Greet sessions on Tuesday, September 6th and Wednesday, September 7th (by appointment). Additionally, we will welcome parents/guardians who wish to walk their child to class on the first day of kindergarten on Thursday, September 8th (last names A-L only) OR Friday, September 9th (last names M-Z only).
On Monday, September 12th, we will ask that families support our efforts in establishing routines and fostering independence in our youngest learners by allowing them to walk to class (or morning mix in the library if arriving before 8am) on their own. Oak Hills staff will be stationed in the hallway to offer support as needed.
We encourage families to keep their goodbye ritual positive and brief. We understand that some children have a difficult time separating from their families, but lingering only adds to their anxiety. In most cases, they are ok by the time you turn the corner. If your child is having a hard time separating when you leave, we will send you an update so you don’t spend the day worrying. We will take good care of your little one and do everything we can to make school a wonderful experience.
Will families be able to visit the school and kindergarten classrooms prior to the start of school?
During the week of August 29th, Oak Hills Elementary School will host a Meet & Greet/Supply Drop Off event when students and families are invited to meet their teacher, check out the classroom space, and drop off any supplies they wish to share prior to the first day of school. Please look for an invitation from your child's teacher as part of the welcome letter you will receive during the week of August 29th!
What are the normal hours for school?
Oak Hills is considered an ‘early start’ school. School starts at 8:00 am and ends at 2:35 pm. Students having breakfast may enter the cafeteria starting at 7:45am. Supervised Morning Mix is available for students who arrive between 7:45-8:00am. With limited space, we would highly encourage students to arrive to school as close to 8:00am as possible.
What is the process for picking up and dropping off kindergarteners?
Kindergarten students may enter through the front doors of the school or through the rear breezeway doors at the back of the building (nearest to the portable classrooms). If your child rides the school bus, they will enter through the bus doors (near the bus lane). All doors are supervised with staff members who welcome our students to school each day as they enter. We have limited our arrival access points for school safety and security.
At the end of the day, your child will have four choices for transportation home:
WALK or BIKE- Families who walk or bike may pick up their child at the back of the building, near the rear breezeway doors following dismissal at 2:35pm.
BUS or DAYCARE VAN- If your child rides the bus or a daycare van, they will be escorted to the bus lane following dismissal at 2:35. If your child attends Club K at Oak Hills, they will be picked up by Club K staff from their classroom. For any daycare program, please be sure to notify the care provider of times when your child will be absent or picked up early from school.
DRIVELINE CAR PICK UP- All families will be assigned a Driveline number. This number will help expedite our pick up process from the front parking lot. When you arrive, have your Driveline number visible from your front dash or window. We will enter this number into our Driveline system, which will communicate with your child's classroom that you have arrived.
Safety is our first priority. The car pick up line does create a back up onto neighborhood roads during dismissal time. Please be patient. A few small adjustments can make this process run more smoothly for all:
- Please pull all of the way forward when in the parking lot
- Ensure students are loaded from the passenger side of the car
- Have your child practice buckling their own seatbelt-- When a driver must exit the car, it slows the flow of traffic for those loading at the same time.
Thank you, in advance, for your support with our end of the day dismissal transition.
Is after-school care offered at our school?
Club K is an on-site childcare program that uses our school cafeteria to provide after school care to students attending Oak Hills. It is a privately owned and operated program (not affiliated with the district or school). Families can contact Club K directly to inquire about availability.
In addition to Club K, there are several other daycares in the area that will transport to and from Oak Hills including Kindercare, Good Times Chinese School, and Bethany Athletic Club. The Beaverton School District does not endorse or sponsor any particular child care program. It is the responsibility of families to do their own research and make decisions that best serve their children’s needs.
How do families ensure that their child will have a lunch to eat on the first day?
Students can bring a lunch from home or purchase a lunch in the school cafeteria. Staff will be available to assist kindergarteners with purchasing lunches. Eventually, we would like students to learn their student ID numbers. Kindergarten students will also have cards with barcodes that are scanned in the cafeteria if they are purchasing school lunch. Students with meal benefits will have the same card and go through the same process to receive their lunch. There is no distinction between students who receive meal benefits or those who do not.
If your child will be purchasing lunch, there are two ways to add money to your account: 1) pay at school-- cash or checks are accepted in the school cafeteria or 2) pay online. SchoolCafé can be used for online payments. There’s a small fee for using SchoolCafé to make deposits.
How much does breakfast and lunch cost?
Breakfast costs $1.65; lunch costs $3.05.
If kindergarteners eat breakfast at school, when should they arrive? How do they get to class after breakfast?
All students can come for breakfast starting at 7:45am. They may be dropped off at the front or rear breezeway doors and will be directed to the cafeteria. All kindergarten students who eat breakfast in the cafeteria will remain in the cafeteria until class starts at 8:00 am. Supervising staff will escort them to class as a group.
How are food allergies handled?
At Oak Hills Elementary School, we want all of our students to experience lunch in a safe environment. In order to ensure the safety of our students with food allergies, nut-free tables and allergy tables are provided. Please make sure the office is aware of any food or other allergies your child may have. Consultation with our school nurse and a health management plan may be necessary for children with severe allergies. Classroom spaces may also be designated as nut-free spaces to help ensure the safety of students experiencing life-threatening allergy conditions. We ask that families please be aware of our allergy awareness efforts and diligent in abiding by this guidance when packing snacks from home.
How do families find out about bus routes? Do families need to register?
Most Oak Hills students live within 1mile of the school and will walk to and from school each day. Elementary students who live more than one mile from school qualify for bus transportation. Families do not need to register. Those living in the bus zone will receive a message from the Beaverton School District Transportation Department with their student’s bus route information via ParentSquare on Monday, August 29th
What will kindergarteners need to bring to school on their first day?
Kindergarten students will need to bring a backpack, healthy snack*, and wear comfortable shoes and clothing. They will also need to bring their lunch if they are bringing a lunch from home. We encourage you to work with your child on how to open and close their lunch box and individual containers before arriving to school.
* When packing snacks please consider packing items they can enjoy within 5-10 minutes, items that are not easily spilled, and those that reinforce healthy eating habits. Fruit, vegetables, breakfast bars (please check for nuts), pretzels, unsweetened popcorn, etc. are all wonderful options.
If families have other questions prior to the start of school, when will the school office be open to call and speak to a staff member?
Our Oak Hills Elementary School office is open daily from 7:30- 4:00pm. Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions you may have. We look forward to welcoming you!
