Coolidge Chronicle
May 19, 2024
In the month of May, our Character Trait focus is Responsibility. As we discuss Responsibility, we will define the trait as “taking action and understanding the impact of our choices.” Taking action can mean doing the right thing or completing the tasks you have been assigned. Understanding the impact of our choices means that our actions matter. Positive and responsible actions can help people, and irresponsible actions can hurt others.
Have some fun connecting as a family this month while practicing Responsibility at home. Here are two ideas for responsibility at home:
As a family, think of ways in which you might make someone’s life a little easier by helping a neighbor or family friend with one of their Responsibilities. Could you bring the garbage to the chute or out to the curb? Could you invite someone over for a meal or a show? Could you help with yard work or pick-up a local playground?
As a family, choose one household chore (or more!) that requires multiple steps. Then have each member of the family select 1 step to complete to help get the job done! Maybe it’s washing the dishes, doing laundry, cleaning a family room or play space, or unloading the groceries – whatever it is, see who can be the most effective at their task!
COOLIDGE COMMUNITY PHOTOS
SELCO came to Coolidge this week to share safety tips with our Grade 4 Students. Check out the photos below from the presentation!
COOLIDGE CULTURAL CONNECTIONS
May Musician of the Month : Lea Salonga
This month, we will enjoy the music of Filipina singer and actress Lea Salonga. Born Maria Lea Carmen Imutan Salonga in 1971, her family moved from Pampanga to Manila, the capital of the Philippines, at age 7. Lea was taught to sing by her aunt and started her acting career at age 7 in theater productions, continuing throughout her life in roles such as The King and I, Miss Saigon, and Les Miserables. Lea also acted in movies, lending her voice to Disney princesses Mulan and Jasmine, and had her own TV show in the Philippines. She was the first Asian-American actress to win a Tony Award. If you care to listen to Lea Salonga, use this Spotify link to access a playlist of some of her most notable tunes. Please note that you will need to create a Spotify account to play these songs, it is free with some ads.

Moving? Won't Be Here On The Last Day? Read below for what to do!
Please notify the office at 841-8880 if you are moving this summer or know that your child will be absent during the last day(s) of school. Please notify the office of an address change/update if you are moving within the town of Shrewsbury, too. Sometimes moves within town mean your child will attend school in another Shrewsbury school zone. (i.e., Beal, Floral, Spring, Paton) Also, if you are aware that your child will not be at school on the first day of school in the fall, please call the office now so Nicole can document the absence and notify the teacher.
Please Send Water Bottles!
With temperatures increasing we want to remind families to send their child daily with a water bottle. Water filling stations are open for your child to use throughout the day. Help us stay cool by sending your child with a water bottle, thermos, etc. to support hydration during the warmer of school year months!

SPRING UPDATES FROM THE NURSE
Now that the Spring has arrived and the flowers are in bloom, I have been seeing a lot of students with red, itchy eyes. If your student has seasonal allergies, please make sure that you are giving them their daily allergy medication so that they will have a comfortable day at school!
Please remember if your child has a fever of 100.00 or higher they MUST be fever free for 24 hours without any fever reducing medication before they can return to school. Also, if they have vomited, they must stay home for 24 hours. If you have any questions regarding your child’s illness, please reach out to the nurse. Also, please make sure that you are sending your child in with a healthy snack and water every day. Lastly, if your child has had their yearly physical exam, please remember to send in the current paperwork to the nurse. You can send it in their folder or email it to ssorenson@shrewsbury.k12.ma.us. Thank you for working together with me to keep all of our Coolidge kids healthy and safe! 😊
