Teacher & Nurse Appreciation Week
A message from Superintendent Dr. Paul E. Coakley

Teacher and Nurse Appreciation Week
MESD Teachers, and Nurses,
Before I was a superintendent, I was a teacher—and that part of me has never left. My time in the classroom shaped everything I believe about education. It taught me that students thrive when they are seen, believed in, and supported by people who care. Teaching is about more than delivering lessons—it is about building relationships, creating hope, and showing students what is possible.
As I reflect on Teacher Appreciation Week, I see those same values lived out every day in MESD schools. Our educators make a lasting difference not only through instruction, but through the quiet moments of encouragement, advocacy, and care. You create safe, welcoming environments where students can be their authentic selves. You help them imagine a future and equip them with the skills to pursue it. You do this work with skill, empathy, and determination to support every child.
During the week of May 6-12, we also celebrate National Nurse Week. In my many roles during my career in education, I have seen firsthand the critical role school nurses play in creating safe and supportive learning environments. Whether responding to daily health needs or stepping in during times of crisis, school nurses are often the steady presence our students count on. During National Nurse Week, I want to personally thank MESD’s incredible nurses for their compassion, expertise, and deep commitment to student well-being. Your work doesn’t always happen in the spotlight, but its impact is felt in every classroom, every day.
This year, I know that Teacher and Nurse Appreciation Week arrives at a time of uncertainty and hardship. The financial challenges facing public education across Oregon—and here at MESD—are real and deeply painful. I want you to know how profoundly frustrated I am at the impact these budget reductions are having on our school communities, and especially on you, our teachers. Please know these decisions are not a reflection of your work, your value, or your impact. We are doing everything we can to navigate these reductions with integrity, transparency, and care. And throughout this process, you remain at the center of our priorities.
I carry the weight of these decisions with me every day, and I remain committed to advocating for the funding and support our students and schools need—and that you deserve. I also remain committed to you: to listening, to learning, and to ensuring that our students are served by educators who are fully supported and valued.
MESD teachers: thank you! Thank you for showing up for our students. Thank you for being their light and their steady presence. Your dedication matters deeply, and I am truly grateful for all that you do.
With admiration and respect,
Dr. Paul E. Coakley
