12 Geography River Trip
On Monday 29 July the Year 12 Geography class finally had a suitable period of weather to allow them to travel out to the Ngaruroro River to collect data from two locations. The first site was the Fernhill Bridge where students collected samples of the water to test for E Coli levels, nitrate levels, invertebrate presence and water clarity. Students used a range of scientific equipment to carry out this research as accurately as possible. The group then travelled to the Chesterhope Bridge in Pakowhai to carry out the same testing. They will be using their findings to conclude whether or not land uses around the river affects its quality. This trip is a part of their 2.5 Geographic Research Internal Assessment which they are currently working on in class.

Kapa Haka off to Christchurch
ĀKINA KI TE AO
Ākina! Ākina tukua!
E hīkaka ana te ngākau, we are thrilled to announce that Te Rōpū Manu Huia Kapa Haka of 25 boys ranging from years 9 to 13, will be participating in an exciting cultural exchange with Shirley Boys’ High School in Christchurch, known as Te Aho a Māui - Māui’s fishing line that connects our two kura together, with Shirley Boys’ being on Te Waka o Māui (the waka of Māui) and Hastings Boys’ on Te Matau a Māui (Māui’s hook). This enriching kaupapa-driven experience kicks off this Sunday, with our rōpū flying down to Christchurch and returning the following Friday.
The initiative was spearheaded by Hastings Boys’ High School Old-boy, Chez-William Waihi, who was not only our Head-boy in 2017 but also a very proud and active member of Te Rōpū Manu Huia in his years here at Hastings Boys’. Chez's dedication to whāngai cultural connections has created this awesome opportunity for students involved in both schools kapa haka to come together, participate, enjoy, promote and celebrate the deep love we all hold for our Māori culture and identity.
We are incredibly proud to share that Chez is now teaching Te Reo Māori, Māori Performing Arts, Te Ao Haka and is also part of the Kapa Haka tutoring team at Shirley Boys’ High School. He embodies the principles of whanaungatanga (building relationships) and manaakitanga (hospitality and kindness) in his role. Chez and the awesome staff of Shirley Boys’ High School, are showcasing and embracing the values of kaitiakitanga (guardianship) and rangatiratanga (leadership) in their commitment to the Te Aho a Māui cultural exchange program.
This endeavour will not only strengthen the hononga (ties) between our kura but it will also encompass the essence of Tikanga Māori, enriching all participants in the beauty of our shared cultural heritage. We look forward to performing on Wednesday night alongside Shirley Boys’ and the other Christchurch area High Schools where it will be streamed live via Shirley Boys’ website.
We would to thank all the parents and whānau who supported their sons to make this trip happen.
Nō mātau ngā kaiwhakaako o Te Manu Huia te hōnore.

What is a Debating Team?
A school debating team is a group of students who engage in organized discussions on various topics, typically following formal rules and structures. Members of the team prepare arguments for and against specific resolutions or issues, competing against other schools in debates. The primary goals of a debating team include developing critical thinking, public speaking skills, and the ability to construct logical arguments while fostering teamwork and collaboration among participants.
Debating against Hastings Christian School
Our Year 12 and 13 debating teams went to Hastings Christian school on Wednesday where they competed in the 2nd round of the Regional competition. They first competed in a prepared debate. The Moot was - 'This house would integrate charter schools into the New Zealand public education framework (ie. the NZ school system)'. Both teams performed extremely well, but unfortunately did not come away with a win. Though the Year 13's (with the help of Roman) only lost by one point. They then went on to do a limited preparation debate, in which both teams won. Overall they each have 3 wins from 4 debates so far. Well done boys and good luck for Round 3!
Year 12 team: Roman Lauvao-Purotu, Alex Wilson, Cowan Scotton and Phaizon Parkes.
Year 13 team: Carter Smith, Bowen Steffert (with help from Roman and Phaizon).

Farewell and Good Luck
Farewell Mr Guy Arnold
I started at Hastings Boys’ High School in 2010, I didn’t really know what I was getting myself into and it's been a journey! For the past 14 and a half years I have taught Science, Horticulture and Biology to hundreds of young men and each of them has had an impact on my life. I have been involved in Canoe Polo in one way or another throughout the 14 years and for a while I coached a Canoe Slalom team then competed in several National Championships.
I have really enjoyed my time at Hastings Boys' High School, there have been many challenges (and challenging students) but the good memories far out way any negatives. I will miss all the boys, even the ones who push me to my limits.
Thanks to all the staff I have had the pleasure of working with over the years for your support and encouragement, the people are definitely what make Hastings Boys' High School is a special place.

Out with the Old and in with the New
While we welcome change there is still a sense of sadness as the old Tier Block is slowly and carefully demolished. There will be many memories from the many years it stood proudly at the front of our school.
