Youth Enrichment
ENCORE Aquatics - Swimming Lessons
If you are new to swimming or looking to advance your skills, we have classes for you!
Swimming lessons for levels 1-4 will be in the Columbia Heights High School Swimming Pool for Summer 2025 classes. The cost for six sessions is $60.
Level/Sessions info:
- Level one (ages 4-6) swimmers - 5:00-5:30 p.m.
- Level one (ages 7+) swimmers - 5:40-6:10 p.m.
- Level two swimmers - 6:20-7:00 p.m.
- Level three swimmers - 7:15-7:55 p.m.
- Level four swimmers - 8:05-8:45 p.m.
Swimming lessons are for students who are PreK 4- Grade 12.
All lessons will be on Tuesdays:

Level 1: For students 4-6 years old
Is for students who have never had swimming lessons or those who are hesitant in the water. This level focuses on being comfortable in the water and provides swimmers with fundamental skills such as floating on front and back, flutter kick and basic arm movements for front and back, as well as important water safety skills.
Level 1: For Students Ages 7+
Is for students who have never had swimming lessons or those who are hesitant in the water. This level focuses on being comfortable in the water and provides swimmers with fundamental skills such as floating on front and back, flutter kick and basic arm movements for front and back, as well as important water safety skills.
Level 2
Is for students who are comfortable in the water and are able to do basic swim strokes on front and back. This level builds upon the foundations of Level 1 through guided practice. Swimmers will work on front crawl, elementary backstroke, rhythmic breathing, as well as important water safety skills. Students must have passed Level 1 and be able to float independently.
Level 3
Builds on skills through additional guided practice. Swimmers will work on front and back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke kick, and treading water, as well as important water safety skills. Students must have passed level 2, be able to swim the width of the pool and be comfortable in deeper water.
Level 4
Focuses on increasing endurance and perfecting the strokes from Level 3 and introduces the dolphin and sidestroke kicks, and diving, as well as other important water safety skills. Students must have passed Level 3 and be comfortable in deep water and be able to swim 25 yards.
Gaining Traction on Mars
Rovers, helicopters, and landers, oh my! Exploring Mars takes all kinds of robotic missions. Youth will work as engineering design teams to create and test rover wheel designs for a mission to the red planet. Along the way, youth will explore the inner workings that make up their rover through hands-on investigations. A daily snack and nutrition activity will also be included.

Babysitting 101
This course is best suited for 10 to 13-year-olds interested in learning the current practices of caring for young children and how to manage their babysitting business. Students will learn safety and injury prevention, CPR, first aid basics, feeding and caring for infants and how to handle behavior problems. Students receive a reference book, handouts, a babysitting bag and a first aid kit.

Kids Cyclic Yoga with Yogilli
Yogilli is a cheerful, friendly yoga doll designed to help kids connect with their bodies, practice mindfulness, and express their emotions through movement. Created by Elham Ayoubi Jalali, a founder and certified Cyclic Yoga teacher, this program guides children through fun activities that foster a supportive and exciting environment for growth. Each session combines storytelling, mindful activities, and movement, helping kids discover and learn in an engaging way. Students entering K-2nd grade for the fall of 2025.

ECFE Summer Opportunities
Free Park Meetups for ECFE
Come play! You’re invited to an informal playtime to meet and connect with other families and their children. Our CHPS ECFE staff will be facilitating the meet-up and answering parenting questions. No registration necessary.

Early Childhood Screening: Complete it this summer before school starts!
Promote positive health and developmental outcomes and kindergarten readiness starting at the age of three years.
- During screening, your child’s speech, motor, and cognitive skills are reviewed.
- Your child will have their height, weight, vision, and hearing checked.
- You will participate in a summary interview to review the screening process, your child's social and emotional skills, and discuss any concerns you may have. Screenings last approximately 60 minutes and are held at the Family Center.
Appointments are required. Registration paperwork is completed prior to the appointment, along with submitting a copy of your child’s birth certificate and immunization record.

Screening is required by MN State Statute 121A.17 for entrance into Minnesota public schools or within 30 days of kindergarten enrollment. Screening is best completed at three years of age.
Homemade Fettuccini Alfredo Class
Join CHHS FACS Teacher, Autumn Trzaskowski, in a cooking class where you’ll unlearn everything you thought you knew about Fettuccine Alfredo and re-learn how to make it from scratch. You’ll begin the class by whipping up pasta dough from scratch with flour, eggs, and olive oil. Master the technique to knead the dough and create your own Fettuccini noodles. As the pasta sets, we will combine butter, cream, and Parmesan cheese into a creamy Alfredo sauce seasoned with herbs from Blooming Heights Garden!

Summer Simple Syrups - Make & Take
Learn how to turn seasonal garden ingredients into delicious, versatile, simple syrups in this hands-on, beginner-friendly class! We’ll explore the art of infusing and preserving fresh flavors using juneberries, lemon balm, sour cherries, and mint—perfect for adding a local twist to your favorite beverages, desserts, or even salad dressings.
In this class, CHPS Ag Specialist Melissa Trent will teach you how to prepare and store syrups, experiment with flavor combinations, and take home recipes (and a few sweet samples!) that celebrate the unique tastes of the season. These will be fantastic for your teas, lemonades and other fun summer drinks! All materials provided. Come ready to taste, create and enjoy!

Focaccia Art & Baking
Unleash your creativity in the kitchen as you learn how to transform the mouthwatering Italian flatbread into an edible art masterpiece! CHHS FACS Teacher, Autumn, will be walking you through how to make your own focaccia dough and demonstrating various decorating techniques to create your own unique piece. With vegetables and herbs collected from CHPS Blooming Heights Garden, you will get to pick your own toppings and make your very own customized focaccia, which you can bring home in a takeaway pan!

"Parent & Me" Homemade Ravioli Class
Spend some time in the Columbia Heights High School Kitchen and bond with your kiddo while making ravioli with CHHS Foods Teacher, Autumn! This is a fun opportunity for you and your child to spend some time in the kitchen together and learn some tips on how to safely include your child in your normal meal-making routine.
This class is set up for one adult and one child for $30, but if you have two children you want to bring, it is only $10 more! For each adult, the cost is $30 (so if there are two adults wanting to attend together with a child, you must register separately) to cover the cost of supplies and instruction. Ages for children attending are recommended 3 to 12, but anyone is welcome as the experience is what you would like it to be with your child! The class is open to any parent, grandparent, or guardian and their child!

Discover the Art of Quilting
This class is on WEDNESDAYS (typo in Community Connections Catalog) from June 25-August 20 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the CHPS Family Center. The $120 fee for the class covers 9 sessions of the class and all materials.
Have you always admired beautiful quilts and wondered how to make one yourself? Join us for this fun, hands-on class designed especially for beginners! Whether you’ve never touched a sewing machine or you’re looking to refresh your skills, this class will guide you through the basics of quilting in a supportive and creative environment. You’ll learn essential techniques such as fabric cutting, piecing, and stitching, while working on a simple quilt project you’ll be proud to take home. Along the way, we’ll cover helpful tips on tools, patterns, and finishing touches. No prior experience required—just bring your enthusiasm and a desire to create something beautiful!
By the end of the course, you’ll have a completed quilt project and the confidence to continue quilting on your own. Come connect with others, get inspired, and start your quilting journey with us! Supplies will be provided. A few sewing machines are available for use, or feel free to bring your own.
Knitting 101 - Learn the Basics Stitch by Stitch
Curious about knitting but not sure where to start? This beginner-friendly class, taught by Katie Cassidy, is the perfect introduction to the relaxing and creative world of knitting. Whether you’ve never picked up a pair of needles or need a refresher on the basics, this course will guide you through foundational techniques in a supportive, hands-on environment. You’ll learn how to choose the right yarn and needles, how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off, and learn how to fix common mistakes! By the end of class, you will walk away with the skills and confidence to start your own knitting journey!
Yarn and needles are provided and included in the cost of the class. You will be taking home your own needles and the project you work on over the two class days. $35 for two sessions and materials are included.
This class will be on Monday, July 14th and Monday, July 21st, from 7:00-8:00 p.m., both days in the CHPS Family Center.
"Parent & Me" Yoga with Togilli
These sessions will take place out by Blooming Heights Garden behind the CHPS Family Center.

Driver's Ed Classes
Students will receive a total of 30 hours of classroom instruction and six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. The classroom portion consists of ten, three-hour classes and the behind-the-wheel portion is three, two-hour private lessons (scheduled through Safeway). Pre-registration is required with CH Community Education. Classes are offered through Safeway Driving School.

Payment options: $217 upon registration. Plus $180 given to the instructor during behind-the-wheel lessons ($90 on first lesson, $90 on second).
Summer Adventure Club
There are still some spots left for Summer 2025 Adventure Club!!
Summer Adventure Club is for children entering Kindergarten through Fifth Grade in the Fall of 2025. Summer dates are June 16th-August 21st, Monday-Friday from 6:30 a.m.-6:00 p.m. (closed on June 19 and June 30-July 4). AC is located in the CHPS Family Center.

Current Openings in Mini Adventures
Mini Adventures is a four-star Parent Aware child care program for children ages 36 months to 5 years old. In Mini Adventures, your child will participate in a variety of activities, including mathematics, guided group time, literacy, dramatic play, music, games, outdoor play, arts & crafts, movement and more! Early Childhood Screening is required for all participants. Independent toileting is required for children before participating.

- Weekly program fee for 5 days a week = $323
- Weekly program fee for 4 days a week = $273

- `Plus a $25 registration fee for new registrations only
- This fee includes breakfast, lunch and a snack. We accept County Child Care Assistance and Pathways I scholarships. Pathways II scholarships may be available for those who qualify.
