Every child, every day, whatever it takes!
Principal's Message
Sterling families,
We have enjoyed serving each of you and teaching your children this year. Their growth has been outstanding! Prior to the end of the school year, your child(ren) will receive a backpack with free books and a workbook preparing them for the upcoming grade level by offering opportunities to practice skills learned this year. Our reading team will share a summer challenge with all students that will also have a place for parents/guardians to sign daily acknowledging their child's practice opportunities. Keep a lookout for these items to come home as the school year comes to a close.
Please mark your calendars with the following dates:
- Friday, June 7: Field Day ~ All volunteers must have submitted a volunteer form and been approved.
- Thursday, June 13: Fifth Grade Promotion 6-7 p.m.
- Friday, June 14: Last day of school

ART NEWS
May started off with an Open House Reception for 31 of our student artists on the town of Leesburg's First Friday. Their artwork was on display at Leesburg Town Hall, where it was greatly appreciated by the public. I received many compliments about their work! In the art room, we remain very busy. Pictured, Kindergarten recently did some review about different types of lines and made line sculptures from paper. Fifth grade finished up their unit on hand building with clay and have now taken home their slab boxes.

Library News
We've been keeping busy in the library by celebrating Earth Day, reviewing for the SOLs (ask 5th graders about our light saber lab and third graders about our pom-pom flyers!), and learning about fact and opinion while voting for our Virginia Reader's Choice favorites, kindergarten, first and second grade will be ending the year with a parade using egg carton floats and robots. Our older students will be wrapping up our science review with library centers, and then everybody will finish the year with our summer reading celebration. Our last week of library checkout will be the week of May 27. Please check with your student about any missing library books. We've had such a busy year and lots of reading fun along the way!

MUSIC NEWS
We started May with two wonderful concerts. The fourth and fifth grade chorus sang and played recorders and xylophones in their spring concert. What a joy it has been singing with this wonderful group every Tuesday afternoon this spring. We also had the two day All-County Chorus festival, culminated by a beautiful performance. Cesia Aguilar Garcia, Gaby Melendez-Martinez, and Lidia Sanchez Salmeron did a wonderful job representing our school this year!

PE NEWS
Sterling students have been gearing up for a summer of physical activities. We hope that kids find the motivation to get outside and find different ways to exercise their bodies and minds! This quarter we have done gymnastics and golf but will be finishing the year with net games and fielding games (volleyball, pickleball, baseball). Field Day is right around the corner, so be on the lookout for important information and reminders about what students should bring that day. Volunteers will receive additional information. Thanks in advance for making Field Day a core memory for the kids!
SEARCH NEWS
Kindergarten and First grade had the opportunity to try a whole new way of coloring! Students had fun with The Critical Thinking Coloring Book™. Students completed various drawing and coloring puzzles specifically designed and targeted to help students develop deductive reasoning, observation, classification, and fine motor skills. During another SEARCH lesson, “Farmer Logic”; students listened to various clues and the matrix to solve the different spatial logic puzzles. To solve, students had to correctly place the pictures of the vegetable to the correct spot on the grid - but listening to the clues and determining where to place each veggie, was more challenging than meets the eye!
Second and third grade classes enjoyed working in teams to play “Gravity Maze.” It’s a maze game. It’s a marble game. It’s a gravity-powered logic maze game that builds reasoning skills and visual perception. Students used the challenge cards to strategically place towers and create a path for the marble to reach the target.
During another SEARCH lesson, second graders got an opportunity to solve logic puzzles in the lesson “Dot Logic.” Students applied deductive reasoning skills by listening to each clue and using the clue to determine what order and color to place specific dots in a line.
Third graders also got to be creative by exploring traditional road signs from different locations around the globe trying to think about what they could mean that would be funny and witty. It was so fun to hear all the different ideas during student share time.

INOVA HEALTHY PLATE CLUB
We had a wonderful time with your K-1st graders this spring! What a fabulous group of students! This week, we learned about physical activity:
- Physical activity means your body is moving, especially if your heart beats faster!
- Kids should try to do physical activity for 60 minutes every day.
- Physical activity strengthens our bones, muscles, and hearts, and even promotes a healthy brain.
The kids played Physical Activity charades!
Final Recipe- Stir Fry
The students were very attentive to our volunteer, Lee, as she showed them the steps.
