STUDENT(S) OF THE MONTH
In DECEMBER the school focused on RESILIENCE and our Student(s) of the Month were chosen for demonstrating this trait during the month!
A WORD FROM PRINCIPAL WILSON
Dear Taylor Families,
Happy New Year!! I hope everyone had a relaxing break and enjoyed every minute with family and friends. It’s always exciting to start a new year and create resolutions both personally and professionally.
International Baccalaureate (IB) - PYP Update:
Last month, I mentioned that our school has been in the initial stages of determining whether we would like to pursue International Baccalaureate (IB) as a framework for our learners in the coming years. One of the first steps is determining if the majority of our staff is in favor of this change before applying to the school district. We placed a vote right before break, and I am pleased to announce that we had 88% vote in favor of this change, which exceeds the threshold needed to move forward with our application to the district. Our next step will be submitting our application to the D51 Robust & Aligned Options Committee. Please click HERE to read a basic overview of IB.
Monthly Theme - Respect:
Our theme for January will be Respect. Respect means being kind, listening to others, and treating people the way you want to be treated. It’s about valuing others and their opinions. At the end of January, classes will nominate a student who has shown respect to be their student-of-the-month!
January Conferences:
READ Plan parent/teacher conference information will be sent out on Thursday, January 9th. These conferences will be held on Thursday, January 23rd from 4:00-8:00pm. You will only receive a conference invitation if your child’s teacher would like to meet with you or to review/update a READ Plan.
Report Cards:
All report cards will be sent home in Thursday folders on January 16th.
Please check your child’s backpack for their report card and please let your child’s teacher know if you did not receive one.
I’m looking forward to the second half of the school year! As always, please reach out if you have any questions.
Respectfully,
Shawn Wilson
Taylor Principal
No Cough Drops
We wanted to remind families that students are not permitted to bring cough drops to school since they are considered medication. Peppermints are allowed and given out in the health office.
Taylor Closet
We have received a generous donation to create a Taylor Closet that will provide apparel and hygiene products for our students. Please contact Mrs. Kuhn or Mrs. Steele if your family could benefit from this opportunity.
COUNSELOR'S CORNER WITH MS. SERENITY
How is it already 2025? This school year is flying by and we are busy learning about ourselves and our emotions in Ms. Serenity’s room. We start this new year with two Calm Ninjas groups in progress. A third group will be added later this month and I will continue to offer these groups as needed. If your child is struggling to regulate their emotions, this group may be a good fit. We may also be able to start a grief group, co-facilitated by Ms. Serenity and a grief counselor from HopeWest, if we have enough students who are needing support with navigating the death of someone close to them. If you think your child could benefit from either of these groups, email Ms. Serenity directly for more information.
This month our lessons’ learning targets vary by grade level. Kindergarteners and first graders will be learning about using body language, facial expressions, and information about the situation to help them identify feelings in themselves and others. Second, third and fourth graders’ lessons are about recognizing that other people may feel differently than we do in a given situation and that is OK and normal. Feelings change and other people don’t always feel the same way we do. Understanding this helps children cultivate empathy and kindness for others. Our fifth graders will practice asking for help from a trusted adult in preperation for our Lifelines suicide prevention lessons that will occur in February and March. Parents of fifth graders, look for more information about these life-saving lessons to come home in Thursday folders in mid-January.
Finally, thank you for all you do to support your child’s growth at home! If you have questions or need resources for social-emotional development and regulation, feel free to reach out to our school counselor, Ms. Serenity.
