FROM THE NURSE
Spring athletics kicked off this week at school and all of us are itching to spend more time outside as the weather gets warmer. Here are a few tips to stay safe and healthy as you increase your activity.
Remember SPRING:
Start slowly & stretch: Gradually work up to your previous activity levels. Stretching after exercise helps to prevent muscle and joint pain and damage.
Proper hydration: The average person needs about 96 oz or more water daily. Hot weather and increased activity means more water loss through sweating and breathing. So increase your water intake to balance that. Most of your fluid should come through water, not sports drinks, energy drinks or soda.
Rest: Make sure you are getting plenty of rest to balance academics, sports, and other activities.
Include a warm-up and cool-down as part of your training: Longer warm-ups increase blood flow to muscles and joints, reducing the risk of injury as you begin your spring routine.
Nutrition: Eating healthy whole foods with a balance of protein, carbs and fats is essential to helping your body perform.
Give yourself some down time: Mix-up your routine with cross training and recovery time.
