Principal's Message
Happy Friday Urbana Students and Families,
Another week down as we dive deeper into class content and progress through term one. As we move forward together throughout the school year, let’s remember that every challenge and experience is an opportunity for growth. If you have questions regarding assignments, coursework, or projects your child is completing, please remember to reach out to their teacher.
Wishing you all a fun-filled weekend and I hope many of you are able to attend and cheer for our Urbana High Hawks as they take on the Ballou Knights at tonight's home football game.

Chromebooks
Students are expected to have their chromebooks charged and with them each day. It is best practices for your student to get in the habit of charging it each night. It is also best to make sure their name is on both their chromebook and charger. If your student has any issues with their chromebook please have them visit Mr. Czapski, our User Support Specialist in the Tech Shop in the main hallway.
Dismissal Reminder for Parents/Guardians
For the safety of all students and staff, IF you are a parent or guardian who has arrived during dismissal to walk with your child, please refrain from walking onto the UMS campus. Instead, please follow the following protocol:
Front of Building: Meet your child on the sidewalk at the entrance to the parking lot after they have left the school campus.
Side/Back of Building (By the YMCA): Meet your child on the brick walkway that leads towards the Y.
Thank you for your attention and understanding with this request.
Fill Out Your Child's Student Information Card
Parents/Guardians, earlier this month you should have received an email from "PowerSchool Enrollment" asking for an update to your child's "Frederick County Public Schools Student Information Form for STUDENT NAME". This email is not spam. UMS needs this information updated in our system (revisions to address, home phone number, cell phone number, email address, etc.)
When you have a moment, please review, update, and submit this information for us through PowerSchool. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Formative versus Summative Assessments - What is the Difference?
Formative Assessment
Purpose: To assess student understanding while they are still learning so adjustments can be made to improve student understanding. Re-assessment may be part of this process but is not required because this data is a snapshot of information for both the student and the teacher. Learning is still happening within the instructional cycle.
Time: Occurs during or within an instructional window
Tools: Class discussions, exit surveys, classroom polls, various games, types of student feedback (just to name a few).
Summative Assessment
Purpose: To assess students' comprehension and application of subject matter and content, typically compared to a set standard. Re-assessment should be part of this process.
Time: At the conclusion of the course, module, and/or unit.
Tools: Tests, quizzes, midterm exams, final exams, etc.
More information related to this topic was communicated to students during our grade level town hall meetings. If you have additional questions, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher.
Reminder: TutorMe Annoucement from FCPS
As of July 1, 2024 Pear Deck Tutor (formerly TutorMe) will not be available for FCPS students. This program was paid for by ARP ESSER grant funds that come to an end August 31, 2024.
