Principal's Message
Greetings Evergreen Community,
Welcome to May!
On Monday, all 7th and 8th grade students will begin completing the Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBA) in their English Language Arts or Spanish Language Arts classes (the week of May 12th, 8th graders will complete the science assessment in their science classes and the week of May 19th, 7th and 8th graders will complete the math assessment in their math classes). The evolution of this assessment over the past few years allows us to administer this test in language arts, math, and science classes rather than operating on a special schedule like has been done in years past. Administering the test in these classes also allows students to engage in testing for shorter chunks of time and reduces the disruption to instruction in classes where testing is not occurring.
Our ultimate goal as an institution is to ensure that 7th graders have learned what they need to learn to be successful in 8th grade and that 8th graders have learned what they need to learn to be successful in 9th grade. This assessment provides us a snapshot late in the school year of how we have done as an institution of meeting this goal. SBA is not a perfect assessment and it is only one data point that we use to determine our success in meeting this goal, but it is a data point that is used. As such, we take this assessment seriously and ask for your support to ensure that students are ready to give their best over the next three weeks. Two ways that you can do this are to make sure that students bring a fully charged Chromebook with them to school each day and to make sure that they are well-rested and well-fed each day when they leave for school (we can take care of the well-fed part as breakfast continues to be free for all students). Your support with making sure they are prepared each day is greatly appreciated.
We are excited for students to demonstrate their learning from this school year and to see the growth that we’ve made as a school community in the areas of mathematics, reading, science, and writing.
With that, I hope you all have a great weekend.
Go Eagles!
