Middle School Update

March 7, 2025
Dear Oakdale Families,
Next week we have the ALRT! presentations. Make sure to read through the information and fill out the form if you would like to opt-out your student. (see info below)
Extracurricular absences: Next week starts the busy spring sports season. Be aware, when students miss school for school sporting events, they need to check with teachers, get work, and turn it in on its due date or the day after (if the due date is the date of the event). No extra time is given for sports absences per our Student Handbook: "If a student is to be absent for an extracurricular activity, it is his/her responsibility to collect any available assignment that will be missed prior to absence and have all work handed in no later than one day after the school activity unless other arrangements have been made with the teacher. The known absence gives the student an opportunity to work ahead or during down time at an event."
Behaviors: As spring break approaches, we sometimes notice an increase in unwanted behaviors among middle school students. To address this, our teachers have been instructed to document any concerning behaviors in Teacherease as behavior logs. They may also reach out to you via email or phone to ensure you’re informed about your child’s actions.
It’s important that students understand these behavior logs and communications are taken seriously both at school and at home. Your support in reinforcing this message is invaluable, and we greatly appreciate your partnership in helping maintain a positive and respectful learning environment. Thank you for your continued collaboration!
YONDR Reminder: At Oakdale, our policy regarding YONDR pouches is designed to maintain a focused and distraction-free learning environment. If a student brings a phone, smartwatch, or other device to school, it must remain secured in a YONDR pouch for the entire school day.
We rely on an honor system to ensure compliance; however, violations of this trust may result in disciplinary action. If a student or parent prefers not to use the YONDR pouches, the device should be left at home during school hours.
Thanks,
Jill Willhoite

Its time to do some spring cleaning in hopes spring will arrive. Come check out lost and found. All items will be donated March 14. It got us to thinking about labeling items - we always look to see if there is a name and return it. We found these handy fabric labels (linked below).

Author Visit:
We are excited to announce that the Middle School Library is partnering with other Edmond middle schools to bring author Dusti Bowling to our school on April 14th. Thanks to a generous grant from OSF, she will be here the entire day and will speak to 6th-8th grade students. In preparation for her visit, the library is hosting two different book clubs: Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus for 6th-7th graders and The Canyon's Edge for 7th-8th graders.
Students who wish to participate in these book clubs need to purchase the book for their grade level from me for $7.50. The book clubs will meet once a week during recess in the weeks leading up to April 14th. Students in these book clubs will have the opportunity to have lunch with Mrs. Bowling the day of the author visit, and she will sign their book club books as well. (See the attached flyer for more information.)
