LETTER FROM: PRESIDENT PARKER HAGLE
Hi everyone!
I hope everyone had a great summer! Mine was busy after graduating middle school. I had knee surgery a week later and shortly after I went to Covington Kentucky for the Great Lakes- Mid Southern regional meeting.
In July I also had my second board meeting in Gaylord MI and had lots of fun!
I have also visited many SAR and DAR chapters.
Just before Labor Day I started my first week of high school at Walled Lake Northern and the night before school started I dislocated my other knee and will likely need another surgery before the end of the year.
I hope to see everyone at my next board meeting in October at Dow Gardens in Midland for some fun, everyone is invited!
Be sure to look at the updated brochure for my project that is attached to this newsletter.
If you would like me to visit your Society or Chapter please feel free to email me at p.hopemscar@gmail.com.
Thank you!
Parker Hagle

Welcome Fall!
A Big Thank You to State Government Studies Chair – Michael Wolven and his Senior – Mrs. Brandis for arranging a tour of the State Capitol on June 18, 2024! State Representative Matt Maddock, his Assistant Joe and Administrator Rachel rolled out the red carpet for us! We had lunch and a meet and greet in Rep, Maddock's office. Then they took us on a tour of the floor of the House. We also got to sit in on a session, be recognized, and watched them vote on 2 bills! We ended our day there with a wonderful tour of the Capital! 12 Members and 12 Seniors were in attendance and State President Parker presented Rep. Maddock with a Certificate of Appreciation, her Project lapel pin and challenge coin. The day was amazing!
Lots of us traveled to Covington, KY for the Great Southern Regional Meeting on July 1st and 2nd. It was great to see old friends and meet a few new ones too! The kids enjoyed service projects, skits, learning about the National Project and meeting the First Responders. We all had a blast on the Ohio River Boat Tour! Parker brought a Michigan Basket that was live auctioned off at the Banquet with the proceeds going to the National President’s Project. Another Big Thank You to Macie Hagle for carrying the Michigan Flag!
On August 3rd - State President Parker did a great job running the Packet Meeting in Gaylord! 10 Members and 15 Seniors & Guests attended in person. 2 Members and 5 Seniors Zoomed in. After the meeting and lunch - We toured the Call of the Wild Museum and then played an 18-hole round of Adventure Golf.
I am finishing up the planning for our October 5th Board Meeting. Everyone is welcome to join us at the Dow Gardens for the Canopy Walk! I will get the flyer out in a few days.

New Membership Incentive
Attention local societies: There is a new Membership Incentive that you will definitely want to hear about! Effective 07/04/24 – 10/19/31, all new member application fees will be refunded directly to the corresponding local societies! The more new members you can get, the more money you will get to do fun activities all while supporting veterans, our military, and historic preservation. So, let’s go get some new members!
By: Joey Podsiadlik, Membership Committee
Membership Objectives
Program: Encourage membership by highlighting the benefits, opportunities, and fun had by C.A.R. members.
Ideas for possible activities:
1. Create unforgettable reminders of the importance of growing membership through “membership moments” at meetings. For example, handing out sweet treats like “M&M’s – Membership & Members”
2. Design displays and pamphlets about N.S.C.A.R. to hand out at community hotspots such as Libraries, Children Museums, etc.
3. Host “pop-up” events and distribute information about C.A.R. via brochures, water bottles with C.A.R. website attached, etc.
- Experiential learning activities at local fairs, festivals, or parks such as making mini crafts, colonial games, etc.
- Organize “Red, White, Blue Flag Football”, 5K’s, parades, etc.
4. Excite other patriotic and parent organizations by sharing the joys and importance of C.A.R. membership through sing-alongs, skits, and other presentations
5. Call upon members to create media and virtual content to share how much fun C.A.R. is
6. Encourage member engagement through attendance raffles and buddy systems
7. Plan fun activities and trips, outside of meetings, with your local society to festivals, amusements parks, or other fun places
8. Maintain contact with prospective members that come to meetings/events to keep them engaged

America 250 Committee Chair - Emma Nelson
Introducing America 250! which is a new contest to help celebrate America! We are getting ready for the USA to turn 250 years old so societies are encouraged to learn about history that happened between March 1, 1774 and June 30, 1775.
1774
· British pass Intolerable Acts (March 31-June 22)
· First Continental Congress (September 5-October 26)
· Suffolk Resolves, Suffolk County, Massachusetts (September 9)
· Greenwich Tea Party (December 22)
1775
· Paul Revere’s Midnight Ride (April 18)
· Battles of Lexington and Concord, followed by the Siege of Boston (April 19)
· Gunpowder Incident (April 20)
· Fort Ticonderoga captured by Ethan Allen, Bendict Arnold and the Green Mountain Boys (May 10)
· Second Continental Congress meets (May 10)
· Continental Army is created from local militias (June 14)
· Battle of Bunker Hill (June 17)
Some great ideas to help celebrate could be skits, creating games/trivia activities, present a program, attend/host a commemorative event, create and informational video/song/film and share, or recreate what would these events look like today. These are just ideas and you can be creative and do other things. Whatever you do, don’t forget to document and take lots of pictures! I look forward to seeing pictures of what you do.

This year I was lucky enough to go to Washington D.C. twice. I was able to go for the national conference and then was able to go with my school a month later. we were able to go to gettysburg. learning about the history of what happened on those grounds was so neat. I got to see the memorial for the 3rd Michigan Infantry, it was dedicated in 1889 for the veterans that fought in gettysburg. We also got to go to the Holocaust museum, the smithsonians, flight 93 memorial, and the state Capitol building. It was such a neat trip that I could talk about it alot. I like how they keep the national heritage alive so that people can learn about it.

American History Committee Chair, Morgan Hughes
Hi! My name is Morgan Hughes and I am your State Chair of American History!
I recently spent 4 days in Washington D.C. on my 8th grade trip and learned soooo
much about American History! Here is a photo of my best friend and me in front of
the Lincoln Memorial.
I also spent time at the Vietnam Memorial looking up soldiers on the Wall from Dearborn
where I live. It was a very moving experience.
I encourage all of you to learn about American History in any way you can.
I will be headed to the great city of Chicago this summer for our Churches' Youth mission trip.
I am excited to learn there too.
Have a great summer and learn!

C.A.R. Day of Service - Macie Hagle
Macie Hagle here, your Founders Day Chairperson, to remind you that our annual C.A.R Day of Service. I asked all C.A.R members, seniors, and supporters to complete service activities in your community around April 5th, in honor of the founding of the national society C.A.R. on April 5th 1895.
Can’t think of ways to help? Here’s some ideas:
Clean up trash at your local park/waterway
Volunteer at a food pantry/donate food
Volunteer at a homeless shelter/VFW
Clean up/pull weeds at your local cemetery
Volunteer at your local library
Volunteer at your local animal shelter
Show your community what C.A.R. can do and what it was created for.
* THERE IS NO CONTEST FOR THIS PROGRAM *
Everyone is encouraged to be in their community through volunteering for the sake of making the community better, which in itself is the reward! Remember to have fun and enjoy these activities, don’t forget to turn in your community service hours to the national website nscar.org!
Be sure to send your C.A.R. Day of Service articles and photos to Mrs. Royse for the next Wolverine.
Conservation Committee Chair, Molly Hughes
Hello, my name is Molly Hughes and I am your State Chair for Conservation!
I love nature, being outside and exploring. Here is a photo of me canoeing
at Howell Nature center on my 5th grade class trip!
I am standing here in a photo with my Principal Mrs. Peterson. Today was my
5th grade promotion and I was given the Americanism Award, I was surprised!
Try to remember to "CONSERVE". Try to cut down on buying plastic things,
containers and toys. I know it is hard, but plastic is everywhere, and we use
too much of it.
I challenge you to collect all the small plastic items that you would normally
recycle and save them to make something cool with! See the photo here! There is
so much to collect and so many colors! I will hand out more information at our
packet meeting in Gaylord. See you then!

GOVERNMENT STUDIES - MICHAEL WOLVEN
Hello, I am Michael Wolven chair for government studies, and I had recently set up a trip to lansing. The trip was overall successful. We were able to go and visit the state capital and the house floor. We learned that the Michigan House of Representatives can make bills and bring them to the floor for voting. If the majority of the votes are yes then the bill has passed. I would like to thank Rep. Maddock one of our state representatives for allowing us the time to come visit. Thank you for the wonderful lunch as well. I would also like to thank our C.A.R. State President Parker Hagle and the other C.A.R. members that were in attendance.
Sincerely,
Michael Wolven
KIDS HELPING KIDS - ANDREW KOSTUN
Meet Andrew Kostun, Kids Helping Kids State Chair
Hi! My name is Andrew and I'm 7 years old and just finishing 1st grade. I'm in Lexington Alarm Society.
I am excited to be the Kids Helping Kids State Chair this year. What will your society do to help other kids? In April, my society put together 12 "Best Day Boxes" to give to Plymouth Community Foster Closet. Kids in foster care will be able to have a great birthday with the things in the boxes!
Mountain Schools - Presley Wolven, Sr. Tim LeMarbe
Hi, my name is Presley Wolven. This is my first committee and I am excited to help your society with information on the Mountain Schools. Did you know that the
Kate Duncan Smith School, located in the Appalachian area of Alabama, is about to turn 100! Be sure to let me know if your society has made a contribution to any of the schools.
Veterans Committee - Danielle Nowicki
The third Friday in September is National POW/MIA Recognition Day. Please take a moment to remember those Americans that were prisoners of war and those who served and never returned home. In support of our State President’s project of “Restoring Hope”, I recommend planning a meeting program focusing on service dogs and how they provide companionship and healing for those suffering with PTSD.
PATRIOTIC EDUCATION - CHARLIE KOSTUN
Meet Charlie Kostun, Patriotic Education State Chair
I'm Charlie. I'm 4 1/2. I love the American Flag and Pledge of Allegiance. Blue is my favorite color! What will do you with your society to help tell others about our country? I love wearing my flag bathing suit and telling people the pledge. I'm also going to be in a 4th of July parade with my family and Lexington Alarm Society! Our house needs a new flag, so we are also going to have a flag retirement ceremony this summer.
PUBLIC RELATIONS - HONORARY PRESIDENT RODNEY MODELL

June 11th and 12th 2024 the Elias Cady Society C.A.R. and multiple DAR chapters as well as a few SAR went to the Bishop International Airport in Flint, Michigan to see off and welcome back our veterans to the Mid-Michigan all women honor flight to go and come back from their “Tour of Honor.”
There were 150 female veterans in the military or active military. We all lined the hallway with large flags. others without flags held signs that said “Thank you for your service!” or “We appreciate you!” All of these veterans have served in the WWII, Korean, or Vietnam war.
There were many news stations there to document these amazing veterans that we all love and thanked.
We took many photos as well as a large group photo of everyone that was there to support the veterans. All of the veterans would say whenever we thanked them for their service that “we were worth it”. As we all left we all were thinking about what they had said and we all knew that it’s NEVER too late to thank a veteran.
From Elias Cady Society, we had four members, Parker H. Chaplain, Macie H. President, Ella M. and Lincoln M. both new members in 2023. Plus Sr. President Linda Royse and Ella and Lincoln’s Mom, Courtney Malott, and Tim LeMarbe, grandpa of Macie and Parker.

M.S.C.A.R. Government Studies Committee Outing
Written by Ella M. and Lincoln M.
Elias Cady Society
On Tuesday, June 18, 2024 we attended the M.S.C.A.R. Government Studies Committee Outing. There were twelve members present from different societies. We went to the capitol building. We met with Rep. Maddock in his office on the 9th floor. He bought us lunch, showed us around his office, and where he works as a State Representative.
On our tour we learned there are fossils in the tile floor. We were impressed by all of the original architecture. We also learned how they vote using the different buttons at their desk.
If they vote yes their last name turns green on the board and if they vote no their last name turns red on the board. When they were voting, we were surprised that the Representatives were talking and moving around during other Representatives speeches.
At the end of the day we visited Heritage Hall, which was recently completed and shows the history of the capitol building.
Elias Cady Society, July Meeting about the National Packet
Elias Cady Society had a pizza party and workshop to discuss the committees in the national packet! Plus we discussed the solemn day 9-11-2001 when America was attacked in New York City and Pennsylvania the World Towers & Flight 93. We remembered and heard personal memories. Thank you Ginny Virginia Bennett for sharing your personal story of your nephew's life lost that day. We also met Isla the baby sister of Macie and Parker, and new daughter of Tom and Nicole Hagle. Congrats to the Hagle family.

This year was my third time participating in the Oakland History Center’s Annual Ice Cream Social in Pontiac, MI. My mom and I assisted the Lydia Barnes Potter Chapter DAR in handing out free ice cream and selling snacks. This year, a nice couple dressed in Revolutionary-era clothing joined us. They set up a game from that time period and many children were enthralled with learning how to play. We also passed out contact information to children in case they wanted to learn more about CAR. The ice cream sandwich stand that we had was the perfect place for refreshments, snacks, and ice cream, which drew the attention of many as they enjoyed the activities at the History Center. Overall, it was a good day and many people’s ice cream sandwich hunger was satisfied.

On June 23, 2024, KKMS held a meeting at the Studebaker Museum in South Bend, Indiana.
KKMS had a great tour of the Studebaker National museum. We learned about the evolution of transportation through American history. The highlight of the tour was the barouche coach Lafayette received as a gift from the US government for his return tour of the US in 1824! We will be commemorating the 200th anniversary of the Lafayette’s Tour this year!
In addition to the Lafayette carriage, the tour included the carriage that took Abraham Lincoln to Ford Theatre on the night he was assassinated and carriages belonging the Presidents Benjamin Harrison and William McKinley.

With the help of many seniors the Lewis Cass Society had had a wonderful summer of learning, growing and service!
Our society celebrated summer by joining the Anne Frisby Fitzhugh-Saginaw Chapter at their Genealogical Family Picnic where society members shared information with the membership about the C.A.R. state and national projects! In addition, our society was overjoyed to be the sponsoring society for a national grant to the Cedar Post Thrift Shop-Emergency Food Pantry! Some other exciting activities included members visiting recommended sites in honor of Lafayette, supporting the Biggest Little Fair, celebrating our Society President serving as the State Vice Chair of Jr. Membership for DAR of Michigan, and volunteer service at the National Guard Conference in Detroit with DAR of Michigan! The activities of our society this summer are too numerous to count, but all equally as important and special! Lewis Cass Society is excited to share the power of service in our communities!

Patriot Grave Marking
by Claire K. (age 13)
I was honored to be asked by the Ypsilanti and Sarah Caswell Angell Chapters, NSDAR, to represent C.A.R. at a patriot marker dedication ceremony for Patriot David DePue, who served as a Sergeant, Private, and Teamster for New Jersey. While his exact burial site is unknown, he has a grave marker at Highland Cemetery in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The ceremony took place on June 15, 2024.
I was asked to give a brief overview of a few dates that were critical to the founding of our country and the Revolution. I focused on the Battles of Lexington and Concord (April 18-19, 1775); July 4, 1776 for obvious reasons; the ratification of the Articles of Confederation on March 1, 1781; and the siege of Yorktown beginning on October 19, 1781.
The ceremony was really nice and was attended by many members of the surrounding communities, as well as several dignitaries. Michigan Society Sons of the American Revolution provided a Color Guard. Scouting of America Troops served as ushers. Several DAR and SAR officers from local, state, and national levels participated in the event. It was also an honor to hear from Cedric Ballarin, Honorary Consul of France in Detroit, who spoke about how France supported the colonies during the Revolution. US Representative Debbie Dingell also spoke and presented a proclamation.
LT. ISAIAH FULLER SOCIETY
Greyson Martin age 8, Rylan Martin age 10, and Blake Shonka age 18 all have submitted applications and Lt Isaiah Fuller Society is hoping to be able to welcome them at our September meeting. As our majority teenage society ages it’s nice to have some younger faces coming in. In Aug we focused on the National Project where we heard 3 different remembrances of 9/11/2001. It was interesting to hear from Jeremy’s grandmother who was a teacher in a heavily military school at the time. As well as Sr. Society President Mrs. Mathieu receiving a call from a person across the street from the World Trade Center buildings. We were each challenged to bring information about how Native American traditions influenced games and healthcare/first aid in our current lives.
