¡Es hora de una nueva unidad en Ciencias! Los estudiantes de PreK y Kindergarten seguirán enfocándose en la jardinería. Estamos aprendiendo sobre las formas de la naturaleza y cómo planificar su jardín para la primavera. En primer grado comenzamos a aprender sobre los patrones en el cielo y comenzamos a observar cómo se mueven las sombras a lo largo del día. Los estudiantes de segundo y tercer grado aprenderán sobre el desarrollo animal y los de cuarto grado se embarcarán en un estudio sobre las adaptaciones de las plantas. En quinto grado, aprenderemos sobre el flujo de materia y energía en los ecosistemas. ¡La ciencia es muy divertida porque siempre hay algo nuevo que aprender!

It's time for a new unit in Science! Students in PreK and Kindergarten will continue to focus on gardening. We are learning about shapes in nature and how to plan your garden for the Spring. In first grade, we started learning about patterns in the sky and began to look at how shadows move throughout the day. Second and Third graders will be learning about animal development and 4th grade will embark on a study of plant adaptations. In fifth grade, we will learn about matter and energy flow in ecosystems. Science is so much fun because there is always something new to learn!

Espero que todos se hayan mantenido abrigados en este frío enero, aunque la nieve nos hizo perder días importantes de instrucción, creo que nada puede superar los recuerdos de jugar en la nieve cuando éramos niños. Desde jardín de infantes hasta segundo grado están concluyendo con la unidad de seguridad contra incendios en la que aprendieron a identificar objetos alrededor de la casa que pueden calentarse y ser peligrosos de usar sin adultos. Los estudiantes aprendieron cómo, cuándo, dónde y por qué tendrían que dejar de caerse y rodar. Los estudiantes concluyen la unidad completando planes de escape de emergencia que terminan en el lugar de reunión de su familia. Si aún no lo ha hecho, asegúrese de consultar con sus alumnos dónde se reunirían en caso de una emergencia.
Los estudiantes de K-2 pasarán al plan de estudios de las 3 R (que normalmente enseño en la primavera, pero a la luz de los acontecimientos recientes se trasladará a la próxima unidad). El plan de estudios de las 3 R se centra en lecciones como “diferentes tipos de familias”, “Conoce tu cuerpo”, “mi espacio, tu espacio” y “Roles de género”. Enseñar el plan de estudios de las tres R es uno de los trabajos más importantes que hago y estoy agradecido de trabajar con nuestra destacada trabajadora social, la Sra. Mata, quien es un recurso increíblemente valioso y un apoyo para nuestros estudiantes.
Los estudiantes de prekínder continúan con su unidad de manipulativos, con días de nieve, feriados y días de desarrollo profesional. Enero no les dio tiempo suficiente a los estudiantes para moverse a través de las herramientas que usarán, lo que los llevará a golpear y lanzar por debajo del suelo en febrero. ¡Espero con ansias toda la diversión y emoción que este mes nos traerá!

Greetings BMPV families,
I hope everyone stayed warm this chilly January, although snow made us miss important instructional days, I believe nothing can top the memories of playing in the snow as a child. Kindergarten through second grade is concluding with the fire safety unit in which they learned to identify objects around the house that can get hot and be dangerous to use without adults. Students learned how, when, where and why they would need to stop drop and roll. Students are concluding the unit by completing emergency escape plans which end at your family meet up spot. If you haven’t already, please be sure to review with your learners about where you would meet up in case of an emergency.
K-2 Students will be moving to the 3 Rs curriculum (which I usually teach in the spring but in light of recent events is getting moved to the upcoming unit). The 3 Rs curriculum focuses on lessons such as “different kind of families”, “Know your body” “my space, your space” “Gender roles”. Teaching the three R’s curriculum is some of the most important work I do and I’m grateful to be working with our outstanding social worker Ms. Mata who is an incredibly valuable resource and supporter of our students.
Pre-K students are continuing their manipulatives unit, with snow days, holidays, and PD days January did not provide enough time for students to movement through the tools they will be using which will lead into striking and the underhand throw in February. I look forward to all of the fun and excitement this month has to bring!

En PBL, todos los grados están lanzando su tercera unidad para el año escolar. Los estudiantes integrarán los principios de BLM @ School mientras se centran en el contenido histórico. Por ejemplo, en 3er grado los estudiantes estudiarán D.C. Historia mientras se integra el principio de las "Mujeres Negras". Con eso, los estudiantes recopilarán información para poder explicar cómo las mujeres negras ayudaron a dar forma a la historia de Washington DC.

In PBL, all grades are launching their third unit for the school year. Students will be integrating principles of BLM @ School while focusing on historical content. For example, in 3rd grade students will be studying D.C. History while integrating the “Black Women” principle. With that, students will be collecting information to become able to explain how black women helped shape the history of Washington DC.

En arte, los estudiantes exploraron diversos materiales y contenidos para aumentar su vocabulario artístico y expresión individual. Pre-K exploró texturas, arte de collage y ahora comienza con habilidades con las tijeras. Los niños de kindergarten están explorando la rueda de colores y mezclando pinturas. Los grados 1 y 2 completaron proyectos sobre simetría radial y equilibrio utilizando pasteles al óleo.
Al comenzar el tercer trimestre, ¡estoy feliz de comenzar la clase de arte con los grados 3, 4 y 5!

In art students explored diverse materials and content to increase their art vocabulary and individual expression. Pre-K explored texture, collage art, and now begins a unit on scissor skills. Kinders are exploring the color wheel and mixing paints. Grades 1 and 2 completed projects on radial symmetry and balance using oil pastels.
As quarter 3 begins, I am happy to start art class with grades 3, 4, and 5! I look forward to a creative February!

Natación y tiro con arco están en marcha!
Nuestros alumnos de 4º y 5º grado han comenzado a disparar a objetivos usando los 11 pasos para el éxito del tiro con arco. Continúan practicando el autocontrol, la auto-reflexión y la paciencia. Tiro con arco es realmente difícil y están haciendo un gran trabajo con él!
Los estudiantes de 3er grado saltaron a la piscina por primera vez el martes pasado. Aprendieron las reglas y procedimientos para la piscina de Roosevelt y aprendieron el calentamiento para la clase. El instructor de natación, el Sr. Z, quedó muy impresionado con la calma y la confianza que mostraron nuestros estudiantes.
1er y 2do grado están trabajando duro en la coordinación ojo-mano. Ellos están aprendiendo bajo mano y arrojando sobre mano a un objetivo. También trabajaron para comparar y contrastar los dos movimientos y cuestionaron cuál era mejor para objetivos a diferentes alturas.

Swimming and Archery are underway!
Our 4th and 5th graders have started shooting at targets using the 11- Steps to Archery Success. They continue to practice self-control, self-reflection and patience. Archery is really difficult and they are doing a great job with it!
3rd Graders jumped in the pool for the first time last Tuesday. They learned the rules and procedures for the Roosevelt swimming pool and learned the warm-up for class. The swim instructor, Mr. Z was very impressed with the calm and confidence our students showed.
1st and 2nd grade are working hard on eye-hand coordination. They are learning underhand and overhand throwing to a target. They also worked to compare and contrast the two movements and questioned which one was better for targets at different heights.

¡Feliz músicos de febrero! Después de pasar 2 meses en la época clásica, estamos de vuelta en los tiempos modernos, escuchando la música de Bob Marley. La música reggae de Bob Marley está llena de mensajes de paz, unidad y justicia. Espero que su música nos inspire a trabajar por la paz todos los días en nuestros hogares, escuelas y comunidad.
Los Chargers en 3er grado han comenzado a tocar la grabadora. Este es un momento emocionante para BMPV, ya que este es un instrumento que se llevan a casa para practicar y tocar. Si bien nuestros sonidos pueden no sonar tan dulces al principio, esperamos traerle música hermosa para el final del año escolar.

Happy February Musicians! After spending 2 months in the classical era, we are back in modern times, listening to the music of Bob Marley. Bob Marley’s reggae music is filled with messages of peace, unity, and justice. I hope his music will inspire us to work for peace every day in our homes, schools, and community.
Chargers in 3rd grade have started to play the recorder. This is an exciting time for BMPV as this is one instrument they get to take home to practice and play. While our sounds may not sound so sweet in the beginning, we hope to bring you beautiful music by the end of the school year.

En enero, terminamos nuestro enfoque en los sistemas que apoyan nuestra biblioteca escolar. De tercer a quinto grado se introdujo el Sistema Decimal Dewey, utilizado en todas las bibliotecas, para ayudar a los clientes a localizar libros. ECE y Kindergarten aprendieron las partes de nuestro sistema de biblioteca que les permite tomar prestado los libros: código de barras, computadora, escáner y caja azul (buzón para regresar los libros). La mayoría de los estudiantes entienden que pueden pedir prestado un libro de la biblioteca y devolverlo para que otros puedan leerlo. ECE también comenzó a visitar la biblioteca y a pedir prestado un libro para llevar a casa. Si lo devuelven, pueden pedir prestados dos y así sucesivamente hasta 4 libros o más si tienen un crédito excelente 😉.
En febrero, me despido del tiempo de la biblioteca de tercer, cuarto y quinto grado y saludo al tiempo de la biblioteca de primer y segundo grado. Nuestro tema de este tercer trimestre es AGENTES DE CAMBIO. Los estudiantes desde ECE hasta 2º grado serán introducidos a libros, recursos y actividades en nuestra biblioteca que afirman su identidad como lectores. También investigaremos cómo convertirnos en agentes de cambio en nuestra comunidad escolar para convertirla en un espacio acogedor para todos.
De tercer a quinto grado podrán visitar nuestra biblioteca durante la hora de acceso abierto en los días 1, 2 y 3 del horario de las clase de inner core con permiso del maestro.

In January, we wrapped up our focus on systems that support our school library. Third through fifth grade were introduced to the Dewey Decimal System, used in all libraries, to help patrons locate books. ECE and Kindergarten learned the parts of our library system that allows them to check out books: bar code, computer, scanner and blue box (return bin). Most students understand they can borrow a book from the library and return it so others can read it. ECE also started visiting the library and borrowing one book to take home. If they return it, they can borrow two and so on up to 4 books or more if they have excellent credit 😉.
In February, I say goodbye to third, fourth and fifth grade classroom library time and hello to first and second grade classroom library time. Our theme this third quarter is AGENTS OF CHANGE. Students from ECE to 2nd grade will be introduce to books, resources and activities in our library that affirm their identity as readers. We will also investigate how to become agents of change in our school community to make it a welcoming space for all.
Third through fifth grade will be able to visit our library during open access hour on day 1, 2, and 3 of the inner core schedule with teacher permission.
