Top of the Hill
December 2024
Message from the Principal
Dear Rothschild Families,
As we approach the final stretch of the calendar year, I want to share some important updates and reminders to help you and your children stay informed about our upcoming events and activities in December.
Winter Concert - December 12th
Students in Grades 1, 3, 5 will be busy preparing and practicing for the Winter Concert (see more information below)
Spirit Days - 12 Days
Leading up to Winter Break all students are encouraged to join in some dress up fun (see more information below).
Winter Fest
On Friday, December 20th we will be having our first Winter Fest for students. This will be done in coordination with classroom winter celebrations and buddy classrooms.
December becomes a very busy time of the year for students, family and school staff. It is important to remember that our young students need EXTRA sleep, healthy eating, and exercise so we can set ourselves up for the best learning environments. It is also that time of year, when students wear down and are susceptible to illness. Please continue to build those routines at home so they can be successful at school.
Thank you for your continued support in making Rothschild a wonderful place for our students to learn and grow. If you have any questions or need assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Wishing you all a joyful and safe holiday season!
Thank You!
Ted Aleckson

Winter Concert
Greetings Students and Families!!!
We are hard at work preparing musical selections for our 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade winter concerts! First Grade, Third Grade, and Fifth Grade students are encouraged to dress their best for the concert, preferably no jeans or heels. Students should arrive at their classrooms or cafeteria table 10-15 minutes before their program. Our concerts take place in the Rothschild Gymnasium. The date and times of the programs are:
Thursday, December 12
1st Grade @ 5:00 pm
3rd Grade @ 6:00 pm
5th Grade @ 7:00 pm
Attendance is encouraged, but not required and it will not affect their grade. Students have been given the lyrics to help them memorize the songs. Students should review the lyrics when possible. Below I have also included a QR code for each grade level that allows them to sing with the songs through Google Slides. I look forward to seeing everyone at the concerts!
Please note Kindergarten, 2nd grade and 4th grade will have their concert in the spring.
COLD WEATHER
Winter is upon us with snow falling and children excited to play outside. Below is the temperature guide that is used to ensure that students are dressed appropriately for recess. Snowpants, boots, hats, gloves/mittens and jackets are required for all 3K-5 students from the first snowfall until all snow is gone from the playground area. If your child(ren) is in need of any items and needs assistance obtaining these items, please reach out to your child's teacher, Ms. Gilmore, Ms. Gillick, or Ms. Schlagenhaft to connect you with community resources.
Please note, if the temperature/windchill is above ZERO, your child(ren) will be going outside for recess.
Our playground is always colder than what our weather apps on our phones tell us. Being on top of a hill across from Lake Wausau, we always experience colder temperatures and more wind.
ROTHSCHILD ELEMENTARY PTO
Our school offers many opportunities for parent/guardian involvement. The Rothschild PTO invites parents/guardians to participate in programs, raises funds, and provides an avenue for parents/guardians and teachers to work and socialize with each other. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to attend Rothschild PTO meetings and help with special projects whenever possible. Rothschild PTO meetings are generally held on the second Monday of the month in the Rothschild Elementary School Conference Room #211. Meetings are held from 6:00 – 7:00 pm. There is an opening for a Volunteer Coordinator for our PTO. Please contact our Rothschild PTO President, Erin Rajek, for more information at erinrajek@gmail.com

ROTHSCHILD ELEMENTARY ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES
ATTENDANCE
When a child is absent, a parent/guardian should call school 715-359-3186, press 1 for attendance voicemail, by 9:00 a.m. to inform the office that the child will not be in attendance. If a family does not call to inform school about a student’s absence, the school will make a reasonable attempt to reach a parent/guardian at home or work. If the office is not able to contact a parent to get an explanation for an unreported absence, the absent child will be recorded as “unexcused”. Police/SRO Zwicky may be called if we are concerned with the safety of the child. After a student has been absent, he or she should bring to school a written excuse signed by a parent/guardian. For doctor or dentist appointments, please bring a slip from their office to have the appointment considered as a medical excuse. Absences beyond five per semester may need a doctor’s excuse. The only excused absences are those due to illness of the student, death in the family, a doctor or dentist appointment that cannot be scheduled after school hours, or whenever the principal considers that exemption from attendance is in the best interest of the student.
STUDENTS WHO ARE TARDY
Children who arrive at school after the attendance bell (8:45AM) will be considered tardy. When such cases occur, parents/guardians should check their child into the office and state the reason for the tardiness. The attendance secretary will make the necessary changes in the school attendance report.
STUDENTS LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY
At times, it may be necessary for you to schedule an appointment or an emergency occurs which requires an early release of your child(ren). Please send a note to school informing the teacher of the early release. Parents/Guardians picking up students during the school day must always check in at the school office and sign him/her out. The teacher will then be contacted to dismiss the student. Parents/Guardians may not remove students from a classroom, lunchroom, playground or location other than the office. Students will not be permitted to wait for parents/guardians in the parking lot or at a curbside location. This procedure will be followed for your child's protection.
CHANGES FOR STUDENT PICK-UP DURING THE DAY
If a parent/guardian needs to change the plan for pick-up/bus drop-off at the end of a day, the parent/guardian must call the office and notify the secretary by 3:00 PM. The secretary will relay the message to the teacher and the student. Do not email the child’s teacher or leave messages on their phone, as the teacher may not get the message before the end of the day.
WE INVITE YOU TO BE A VOLUNTEER AT OUR SCHOOL!
Every day, D.C. Everest volunteers make a huge impact on the educational experience of our students. Volunteers are welcome and greatly appreciated. Whether you are interested in a one-time, one-hour project or an ongoing opportunity, we will find something that fits your schedule, talents and desires.
We continually strive to build a culture of civic engagement across our K-12 curriculum and strengthen connections district wide through meaningful engagement. With safety as a top priority, D.C. Everest has updated how it approaches the use of volunteers who may work with our students. All school sites across the D.C. Everest Area School District (DCE) and Greenheck Fieldhouse Recreational Programming will utilize an automated volunteer management program called Volunteer Tracker to manage volunteer opportunities. Volunteer Tracker allows us to manage our volunteer program across the district, track and recognize the volunteer contributions of community members, send reminders to our volunteers/staff, and conduct criminal background screenings. A snapshot of the different levels of volunteer opportunities and an overview of the application and background check procedures associated with each is provided below. If you have questions about volunteer opportunities at a specific school, please contact the Rothschild Elementary School Office.
For in-depth information related to district volunteer opportunities and/or protocols, please visit the DCE Volunteer page https://www.dce.k12.wi.us/community/dce-evergreen-volunteers
