Pastor Rich's Weekly Devotional
An Awareness of Sacred Time
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done. (Gen. 2:2,3)
Think back to your biological family, your family of origin. How was time experienced or discussed in your family? Was yours a leisurely family that was relaxed about time and didn’t worry about deadlines or being “on time”?
Was yours a “hurried” family, always behind schedule or rushing to catch up? Or, did you grow up in a home where life was methodical, time regulated, and schedules fairly strict?
The Bible teaches that God created time and created us with the freedom to celebrate the time we enjoy each day. How do you view God’s gift of time?
For a child, time in the sense of something to measure and keep track of, time as the great circus parade of past, present, and future, cause and effect, has scarcely started yet and means little, because for a child all time is by and large NOW time and apparently endless. (from Frederick Buechner, The Sacred Journey, p.9)
I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven (Matthew 18:3).
How blessed we are when we take a fragment of time and focus on our relationship with God. For God will bless that gift of our time with insights, wisdom, and potential solutions to the thorniest of life’s problems. But we must first surrender our stranglehold on our time to hear God’s voice.
Time spent in the presence of God – Sabbath time – is a precious opportunity to mend our tattered lives. May we freely offer that time to God, and joyfully receive the blessings God offers in return.

Historical Field Trips UPDATE : June & July
Feel free to invite your family and friends to any of these events.
June - On Saturday, June 15th we will visit the Underground Railroad Living Museum located in the historic First Congregational Church of Detroit. We will meet in our church parking lot at 9:30 am, determine who will drive, and then journey downtown. We will check-in at 10:30. The tour begins at 11. The cost for the tour and transportation is $15. Bring cash! After the tour, each “car-group” will decide where to stop for lunch before returning to OLCC,P. For more info: http://friendsoffirst.com/underground-railroad-tours/
If you want to go and/or drive, please email garyforhan@ameritech.net
July - On Saturday, July 13th, we will be going to the Detroit Tigers baseball game at Comerica Park. The Tigers are playing the Dodgers at 1 pm. I have 8 tickets still available at $35 each. I am arranging transportation to and from Comerica Park so you don’t have to worry about driving and parking. Because the Tigers require payment in full at least 30 days in advance, I need everyone who wants to go to claim their tickets and pay for them by this Sunday, June 9th. If you want to go, please email garyforhan@ameritech.net with your name and the number of tickets you need. Then, make out a check to OLCCP, write “Tiger Tickets” in the memo line, and drop it off in the church office or give it to Gary at church on Sunday (10:30 service). If less than 44 tickets are paid for by June 9th, I will return the unpurchased tickets to the Tigers.
If you have any questions, please email Gary at garyforhan@ameritech.net.

2024 WOMEN'S SUMMER BIBLE STUDY
ANGELS
Who they are, What they do, Why it matters By Dr. Jack Graham
Wednesday Mornings, 10 to 11:30 a.m. July 10 - August 28
Myths about angels are everywhere. Many of our ideas about angels come from the media, which are more interested in ratings than truth. It's important for Christians to understand what angels really are.
Dr. Jack Graham (no relation to Billy Graham) walks you through Scripture, revealing the truth about angels and what they offer us: encouragement, counsel, confirmation of God's will, strength, protection, wisdom, companionship and more. Focusing on practical application, Dr. Graham separates fact from fiction and demonstrates that the main role of angels isn't to draw attention to themselves, but to point us toward Christ.
This 8-week study includes both personal daily assignments and weekly group discussions. "Angel" books will be available at our first class.
--- Any questions or to sign up, call Bonnie Horner at 248-880-2327 or email bnnhrn@yahoo.com.
Mark your calendar now. Don’t miss this opportunity to enrich your relationship
with God by learning about angels. Come and bring friends and neighbors.

Once again this year, our congregation has volunteered to prepare and deliver meals to the homeless families in the SOS/Lighthouse program. The week in which we will be doing this is June 16-22.
The ingredients will be purchased ahead of time, and the meals will be prepared in our church kitchen. The team of Betsy Telford, Sherry Orr, and Dodie Berry will be planning the menus. We will soon be asking for volunteers to cook on specific days, so please watch the bulletins and email blasts for details. We will also be asking for monetary donations to help defray the cost of the food.
This congregation has always been extremely generous in reaching out to our less fortunate neighbors, and we're looking forward to that kind of response again. Thank you in advance!

God’s Faithfulness continues to guide the Campbells: The Campbells endure some heartbreaking events.
Just one month after the dedication ceremony of the completed chapel on July 18, 1874, Colin Campbell was forced to close his dry-goods business. Among other factors, the financial panic of 1873 had severely undermined the profitability of his "Scotch Store".
Then, in September of that same year, Colin and Caroline's 20-year-old daughter, Jeanie Campbell Brush, died of typhoid fever. She left behind her husband, Henry T. Brush, the architect of the little chapel, and their 5-month-old daughter, Annie. Jeanie's funeral was the first funeral held in the chapel. The stained glass window that is now in our columbarium was a gift from Henry and Jeanie for the completion and dedication of the chapel.

The purpose of the Cultivating the Gift of Preaching Initiative is to strengthen the witness of the Church to the good news of Jesus Christ, by identifying, training, and providing ongoing support to emerging preachers. Across the eleven presbyteries of the Synod, there are numerous ruling elders and other church leaders who are called and gifted to preach the good news. The aim of the Initiative is to cultivate these gifts through rigorous training in biblical interpretation, reformed theology, and sermon preparation. The Initiative aims to add 140 or more trained preachers across Synod over four18-month training cycles, beginning in June of 2024 and through 2028.
