Summit High School

Message From Mrs. Grimaldi
Dear SHS Families,
Report cards for the 2nd marking period and the midterm exams area available in Genesis. Please see the directions below for accessing report cards.
Please be reminded that we do not have snow days built into the school calendar. Therefore, each snow day pushes back the end of the school year. Since we have had one snow day so far, the last day of school for students will be Monday, June 16th. If we have more snow days, then the last school day for students will be moved. Please arrange your summer accordingly.
It's a great day to be a Hilltopper!
Stacy Grimaldi
Principal

Course Selection
We will begin the process of preparing for course selection for the 2025-2026 school year in upcoming weeks. Below is a timeline of events and other important information to prepare for this process.
Course Selection Timeline:
- January 23, 24, 27, 28, 2025: Midterm Exams
- January 29, 2025: Presentations by School Counselors during PE classes to review the course selection process
- February 26, 2025: Honors/AP eligibility letters will be mailed home to students
- Week of March 3, 2025: Junior course selection appointments
- Week of March 17, 2025: Sophomore course selection appointments
- Week of March 31, 2025: Freshman course selection appointments
Preparing for Course Selection Appointments:
- To best prepare for these scheduling meetings, students should:
- Review the Program of Studies for course descriptions and prerequisite requirements.
- Complete the Elective Sheet (with alternate choices) and bring it to their appointment.
- Students should be confident in their choices as no changes will be made to electives once course selection is complete.
- The date of a student's course selection meeting does not influence the likelihood of them getting their top elective choices.
- Students and parents/guardians will have access to review course requests in Genesis following their appointment.
Honors/AP Eligibility:
- Honors/AP Eligibility letters will be mailed home by February 26, 2025. If you do not receive a letter but believe you should be eligible for a course/s based on the criteria in the Program of Studies, please contact your school counselor.
- Students will be provided with a list of AP and/or Honors courses for which they are eligible to take based on the following criteria:
- Students presently enrolled in an Honors/AP class in a discipline will be eligible to take an Honors or AP course the following year if they have a B- (80) or better midyear average (Q1, Q2, X1) with no grade less than C+ (77).
- Students currently enrolled in a non-honors College Prep course in a discipline will be eligible to take an Honors or AP course if they have an A- (90) or better midyear average (Q1, Q2, X1) with no grade less than B (83).
- There are several Honors/AP courses that have additional or different eligibility requirements. These courses are listed in the Program of Studies on page 4 and in the course descriptions.
- We encourage students to make thoughtful and balanced decisions when increasing the rigor of their schedule. Being eligible for a course does not require students to take that course.
- Students should be aware that when enrolling in an Honors and/or AP course, the following applies:
- No schedule change requests for dropping an Honors or AP course will be considered until the end of Marking Period 1.
- Grades (unweighted) are carried from the old course to the new course if a level change is made.
- Level changes are based upon available space and administrative approval and thus are not guaranteed. Approved changes can result in disruption to the schedule overall (ex: other courses and/or teachers being changed, electives being dropped or changed, etc).
- If approved to drop from an AP-level course, students will be scheduled for the college prep-level equivalent (except for Chemistry).
- Students taking an AP course are required to take the AP exam in May.
If you have any questions about the course selection process, please contact your school counselor.
Reminder - Cafeteria Open for Breakfast Each Day

Revised End of Year Calendar
Governor Murphy moved the Primary Election Day in June from June 3rd to June 10th. Since some district schools are used as polling places, school be in session on June 3rd and closed on June 10th. Please view the high school calendar on the district website to see an update of the high school schedule for June.
February is National Children's Dental Month
Tooth decay (or cavities) is the #1 chronic childhood disease in America and is largely preventable. Oral health problems in children may result in pain and discomfort; sleep and appetite issues; low self-esteem, confidence, and social skills; and reduced academic performance.
The Give Kids A Smile (GKAS) program provides children with free oral health care during the month of February. Each year approximately 6,500 dentists and 30,000 dental team members volunteer at local GKAS events to provide free oral health education, screenings, preventive and restorative treatment to over 300,000 children. Additional information and a list of participating dental offices is available online at Give Kids A Smile
The 2024 New Jersey Dental Clinic Directory also provides a central source of information on public dental clinics and services in New Jersey that provide services year round. These clinic services are primarily provided by local health departments, hospitals, and Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs). A directory of clinics and providers is available online at https://www.nj.gov/health/fhs/oral/documents/dental-directory-2024.pdf
Some important notes regarding the NJ Dental Clinic directory: The dental clinics are listed by county. If you are unable to find a clinic in your county, check other nearby counties. Be sure to ask about the documents you need to bring to your appointment, as insurance and payment options vary by clinic and are subject to change. UNINSURED? You may qualify for free dental services at an FQHC. FQHCs listed in this directory are marked with an asterisk (*).
Never hesitate to contact your child’s school nurse for additional information!

Please be sure to include the student's name, grade, reason for dismissal, time of dismissal, and if the student will return to school.
Morning Drop Off
There were several times before the holiday break when morning drop-off became unsafe. This was due to people speeding, dropping students off on the wrong side of the Kent Place Blvd., cutting people off, and crossing the line on Weaver Street to bypass the drop-off line.
If we all adhere to the following guidelines, drop-off will be safer for everyone.
- If dropping students off in the driveway, pull up all the way to the gym doors. This will allow more people to drop students off and will reduce the congestion on the driveway.
- If dropping students off on Kent Place Blvd, drop off only on the school side of the street.
- Do not make K-turns or turn around in driveways along Kent Place Blvd.
- Do not cross the line in the driveway to bypass cars who are waiting to drop off students.
If you have a senior driver please be sure to discuss these guidelines with them.
Below please find a link to the video that was created to outline safe drop-off procedures.
Did You Know?
Did you know that you can view your student's check-ins on Genesis? Students scan into the bathrooms, library, help centers, counseling office, and nurse's office when they visit these locations during the school day. You can view these check-ins in Genesis. Log into your Genesis account, and click check-ins on the left side of the screen. Please discuss with your student any excessive time out of class.
You can also view how many times your student did not have their ID badge with them in school. Please help ensure that your student has their ID badge with them each morning.
Visitors to Summit High School
Appointments must be made in advance to see teachers, counselors, administrators, and other staff. Please be prepared to announce your name and purpose in order to be granted access into the building.
When a visitor arrives at the school, they will be asked to provide identification, such as a driver's license or state-issued ID card. If the visitor does not have any means of identification on them, they will be asked to input their first name, last name, and date of birth into our visitor management system. The identification is then scanned into the system, and the visitor's information is checked against a database to ensure they are not on any prohibited lists. Once the visitor's information has been verified, a temporary badge will be printed and provided to them by the school security officer or school secretary. This badge must be worn at all times while the visitor is on school grounds and will be collected upon their departure. All visitors to the building must be escorted by a staff member at all time.
In the event an emergency visit is necessary, please call the school’s main office ahead of your arrival so we are prepared to accommodate your needs.
Drop-off items (lunch, instrument, Chromebook, etc.) may be dropped off in the bin outside the main entrance vestibule. We will not inform students when items have been dropped off for them.
