Happy Hmong New Year to everyone!
In the Hmong community, this time of year celebrates the closing of the old year and the welcoming of the New Year. This time is often marked by the harvesting of crops, followed by a period of rest and festivities with loved ones and neighbors. It's a time to remember our ancestors and honor them with offerings. It's a time for enjoying a meal with family from far and near and to meet new people.
On Saturday and Sunday, St. Paul will host one of the biggest Hmong New Year Celebrations in the nation at the River Center. It's one of my favorite events each year, as the young and old, come dressed in their colorful clothes to engage in all the festivities. I recall as a young girl, my mom would take out all her suitcases and dig out enough Hmong outfits for my ten brothers and sisters and I. It would take her the whole morning to get everyone dressed and she would beam with pride at all of us. Although many things have changed since those days, some things remain the same - the look of pride from parents at their children wearing Hmong clothes, the smile on young people's faces as they meet new friends, the sight of people lined up tossing ball, dancers and singers on stage, and the sound of coins jingling throughout. Looking to the new year with hope, may you all receive the good things that the new year brings: good health, prosperity, and lasting memories with loved ones.
