Weekly Digest
Franklin College Student Academic Services
March 2 - March 6, 2020
Happy first week of March!
The Digest is fairly small this week, for a change. Do make sure to take note of the important information from EITS about attempts by someone to gain access to secure information.
Please contact me at mjenn@uga.edu if you have suggestions or if there is anything you'd like me to include in the digest.

New Student Resource Guide
- The guide is now on Smore for easy phone and tablet viewing. It can be found here: https://www.smore.com/3tujd Please feel free to share it with your students.
Beware of False Impersonation Attempts (sent by EITS)
- Earlier today, the EITS Helpdesk successfully turned away a fairly sophisticated attempt to impersonate and obtain the password of a key executive at UGA. I am sending this note to make you aware of these attempts and ask you to be on guard for similar impersonation attempts, whether by phone or email. Please forward this email to your direct reports and other key leaders who have access to sensitive and restricted information stored in University information databases.
- The culprits called the EITS helpdesk and asked to reset the password for this executive. They were not able to answer this individual’s secret questions. They were also not able to verify the executive’s identity with ArchPass. It was obvious to my team that the culprit had done some background research on this executive, knew their responsibilities, etc. Once turned away, the culprit called the EITS helpdesk a couple more times, each time asking again to reset their password and for static ArchPass codes.
- The thing to watch out for is mysterious prompts from your ArchPass device, ones that you did not initiate personally, or cold phone calls from individuals who pose as IT staff, who ask you to accept an ArchPass prompt or to verify the answers of your secret questions. EITS staff will never initiate a cold call with you to request this type of information. Should you experience this or something similar, please call the EITS Helpdesk at 706-542-3106 to report the incident.
- This attempt was not a run of the mill phishing attempt, but a more sophisticated attempt that reflected some active research and knowledge of our key executives. Please continue to be diligent about messages you receive, links you click, or if responding to unsolicited phone calls asking for your confidential and sensitive information.
Upcoming Meetings
AB Meeting - AFAM, Brooks 327
BS Phys Sci - General discussion, Brooks 348
Information for Advisors
PHYS 1111+L and 1112+L Waitlist (From Craig Wiegert)
- The Physics department cannot currently create Athena waitlists for these Physics courses/labs due to cross-listing issues with PHYS 7111+L and 7112+L (for graduate students in Education who need to take content-knowledge courses in physics as a part of their curriculum).
- Please encourage any student who is trying to get into these courses to contact Tom Barnello about being added to his "alert list" for enrollment limit changes. It's not a substitute for a wait list, but (1) it at least allows the department to keep track of demand, and (2) if those 7111 and 7112 seats go unused for much longer, Tom will be able to shift the enrollment caps to open up a couple more 1111 and 1112 seats, and then inform the students on his alert list.
New General Education Core Proposal Feedback Request
- The University System of Georgia (USG) is looking for advisor feedback as it continues its efforts to redesign the general education curriculum throughout all USG schools.
- The website for General Education Redesign is: https://www.usg.edu/redesigned_general_education
- On this site (second to last paragraph) there is a link to a video presentation of the details of the redesigned general education proposal and the rationale behind the suggested changes. Here’s the direct link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E0x64jk8OE&feature=youtu.be
- In the last paragraph on the landing page for this site, there’s a link to the “Redesigned General Education Feedback Form.” Here’s the direct link: https://www.usg.edu/redesigned_general_education/feedback
- We want all advisors to have an opportunity to see the proposed model and provide feedback before the Board of Regents Meeting April 14-15.
