Husky Highlights Newsletter
mid-August 2022
☀️Principal's Message☀️
There has been so much great work happening, we just had to send out a mid-month newsletter!
Welcome back, teachers, staff, students, and families to the 2022-2023 School Year. Our team has been working diligently to make sure we are ready for an amazing year of fun and learning. If you have not had a chance to review the information from our August Newsletter, please click here to view the information. Some of the Back to School events are included in this newsletter as friendly reminders.
I want to specifically highlight a few events:
- Student Orientation - August 24th 9:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. This is a great opportunity for students to meet their new teachers and walk through their 2022-2023 schedules.
- Back-to-School Night - August 24th 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Parents, this is a great opportunity for you to meet your student's teachers and ask questions.
- Tuscarora Tailgate - August 26th 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. The tailgate is a Tuscarora tradition and a fantastic opportunity for families to have some fun, grab some food, and gather for the first football game of the season.
Please read through this newsletter to familiarize yourself with other events at the school.
As always, please reach out to me or any of my staff for assistance. We are looking forward to the best school year ever!
Pamela Croft
Principal

Parents/Guardians, please review this document with your student(s). Collaboratively, we will partner together to create a safe and effective learning environment for each and every Tuscarora Husky.
Student Parking
Student Parking at Tuscarora High School is now FREE, which means some changes have been made to how we manage the student parking lot.
All students will need to have a valid driver’s license and a completed the Student Parking Pass Form that can be found on the THS Student Parking Webpage.
Parking selection/ reservation and painting will be a Senior class privilege. Seniors will have the opportunity to select their space first. We advise seniors to take advantage of senior space painting with SCA on the designated dates, September 2nd and 11th from 9am- 1pm. Seniors please complete the 2022 Senior Parking Design Form to have designs approved by August 26th.
Please read the 2022 Student Parking Information Packet for all parking guidelines.
All other student drivers will be assigned parking passes upon google form completion. Assigned passes will permit students to park in the student lot on a first come, first serve basis. Any spot in the student lot that is not painted will be spaces that are available to underclassmen. Underclassmen, please plan to get to school early to obtain the best parking available each day!
We are hopeful that this will alleviate some of the issues that occurred with student parking last year.
Seniors, please reach out to Ms. Smart to secure your space to be painted. Seniors that choose not to paint a parking space will park on a first come, first serve basis.
Passes will be available for all students to pick up on the first day school, August 25th starting at 8:15 am. Please come in with your valid driver's license. Remember, every student is required to have a parking pass if they park on the grounds of Tuscarora High School.

Update from our Reading Specialists
Welcome back, Huskies! Fall i-Ready Reading testing will take place for ALL 9th-12th graders from August 31st through September 9th during English classes. The reading scores will be utilized to suggest appropriate placement, possible changes, and to create focused reading intervention groups that take place during English classes and/or during study halls. Students reading two or more grade levels behind their current grade level are candidates for reading intervention.
Please be aware that these i-Ready test scores are an important indicator of EOC Reading SOL performance (English 11 SOL) and are a significant data point for our school. Therefore, please encourage your student(s) to take this test seriously and to try their best on it. Student scores will be published in StudentVUE later in the quarter, and parents will be notified if reading remediation is needed. If you have any questions or concerns about the i-Ready test, please contact Mrs. Katy Schain (Alice.K.Schain@lcps.org) or Ms. Kristin Sheetz (Kristin.Sheetz@lcps.org).
Math News
Parents and students, LCPS administers NWEA’s MAP Growth tests in Reading and Math each fall, winter, and spring to students in grades 2-8, first grade students in Math, and high school students enrolled in Algebra I and Geometry to determine their instructional readiness level and measure academic growth throughout the school year and from year to year. The MAP Growth pre-assessment will be given during the week of August 29, 2022.
MAP Growth tests are adaptive, providing a detailed picture of what your student knows and is ready to learn—whether it is on, above, or below grade level expectations. MAP Growth tests also provide immediate and accurate information about your student’s learning, enabling teachers to personalize instruction to meet students’ needs.
For more information about the MAP Growth test, visit: https://www.lcps.org/Page/217792
