Ripon Cathedral School Update
Week ending Friday 22nd November 2024
A Capital Visit
Year 6 Visit to London
Last week, Year 6 visited London and what an amazing experience this was! The children behaved incredibly well and are an absolute credit to the school. Our explorers visited The National Gallery, The Tower of London (where they met a Beefeater), The Houses of Parliament, Shakespeare's Globe, St Paul's Cathedral and the Science Museum. They were all extremely brave and took a ride on the London Eye and were stunned by the views of London by night. The show, Mrs Doubtfire, had some children laughing out loud - it was great fun! Thank you to all the staff who have enabled this trip to happen. We are very lucky to have such great children and such an amazing staff team here at Ripon Cathedral Primary.
Well done and a huge thank you also goes to those children who did not join us in London. We are very proud of you too. They acted out Romeo and Juliet as well as completing other activities linked to London. They showed that they could be great models to the younger children in school and were a great help in our Children in Need worship! Thank you to Miss Haslam who worked with these children in school all week.
Cross Country Championship
This week, a group of pupils from KS2 took part in the Sporting Influence Cross Country competition at Outwood Academy. This year, the organisers asked for only 5 boys and 5 girls from each year group in each school, so the classes put forward a mixture of willing volunteers and those who had not yet taken part in one of the Sporting Influence contests this year. It was a very cold day, but our 40 runners braved the conditions and gave their all. Year 3 and 4 pupils had to run two laps of the Outwood playing field, and Year 5 and 6 had to run three. Every runner from Cathedral School finished the course, and we finished in a range of places from the front to the back! The runners’ points were calculated and we are now awaiting a final total and our position in the overall competition. A special shout out to the Year 3 and 4 girls, where 3 of our runners finished in the top 4 places! A huge well done to Natasza who won the race, and to Isabella and Lottie who finished in 3rd and 4th places.
Year 3 Hindu Temple Visit
On Thursday, Year 3 visited a Hindu Temple in Bradford. They enjoyed learning about how Hindus worship and some children even dressed up in traditional Indian dress. Later in the day, the children took part in an Indian music workshop. The listened to the sound of the sarod and sung along, used body percussion and musical instruments.
Owl Babies
As part of our English topic on 'Owl Babies' we had some special feathery visitors to our Year 1 class today. Dani our owl expert was able to tell us lots of interesting owl facts and answer all of our questions. We found out that if owls have orange eyes they are awake during the day and if they have black eyes they are awake at night. A big thank you to Dani (Pippa and Ronnie's mummy) for teaching us so much today and to Diago and Casper the owls for showing us their amazing flying skills.
Christmas Card Competition
We were delighted to learn that one of our pupils has been chosen as a runner up in local MP Julian Smith’s parliamentary Christmas Card Competition! Well done to Isabelle in Year 4 for her superb design, which will be made into a real Christmas card.
Stars of the Week
Congratulations to this week's stars who were celebrated in our worship time this morning.
Nursery - Rocco for trying really hard with writing the initial letter of his name.
Reception - Leo for being a 'Concentrating Crocodile' in phonics, trying his best to join in and using his phonics sounds in his writing this week.
Year 1 - Nienna for her excellent 'Owl Babies' story. She consistently and carefully chose descriptive language to make her story interesting for the reader.

Year 3 -Levi for showing lots of curiosity on our school trip, asking lots of questions and getting involved in everything.
Year 4 - Jojo for giving superb effort across the curriculum.

Information Sharing
School Christmas Lunch
Please be sure to read the email and attached letter sent out today. In a change from previous years, we are using an 'opt out' system and assuming that all children will eat the Christmas lunch, as this is generally the case every year. Payment details and how to opt out are explained on the letter. Of course, children are very welcome to bring a packed lunch and they will join in the festivities and sit at the same tables as all the other children. We hope everyone will understand that it will help with food ordering and lessen any waste if we know numbers in good time. If you know your child will be bringing a packed lunch, please email rbingham@riponcathedral.n-yorks.sch.uk by Wednesday 27th November. No email is necessary if your child will be having the hot Christmas dinner. Thank you.
Health and Safety
Please could parents and carers dropping off and collecting pupils refrain from allowing children to use the play equipment on the playground, including the Nursery outdoor area, the area outside Year 1 and the Outdoor Gym before and after school. This is for Health and Safety reasons and to help keep our school tidy. The staff and children work hard to put away all the outdoor toys at the end of playtimes so that school can be left tidy overnight. The Outdoor Gym is specialised equipment with its own safety rules and age limits so this must not be used without staff supervision. Many thanks for your help with this matter.
