Van Meter Performing Arts Boosters- UPDATE
Youth Basketball and Youth Wrestling
We get a lot of requests from youth coaches to use our gyms. Most districts our size have 3-4 gyms for use. We have two. It is a challenge to schedule all of the requests, so we have developed a process that gives everyone an opportunity to practice at least once a week. Please follow this process when requesting gym times.
We will create a scheduler that identifies all of the available times for using the gym from October 28- December 19 and contact coaches who complete the survey below. The wrestling room times will be coordinated directly with Mr. Roberts since there are set youth times. Each basketball team will get to schedule one practice a week with a chance for more if time is available. Each team will be notified when they can request more practice times. ALL PRACTICE TIMES ARE FLEXIBLE. We may need to adjust the practice schedules of our school teams so youth team practice might have to be canceled. To have the opportunity to use the gym, you will need to follow each step outlined below.
The process for getting gym time is as follows:
- Complete this survey by 4:00 p.m. Friday, October 18 to let us know who needs gym times. You can do it later, but most times will be taken.
- The available gym dates will be sent out on Monday, October 21 to all who have contacted us via the survey.
- A scheduler tool with available times will be emailed to coaches.
- Complete the scheduler tool for one practice time per week for each non-school team.
- The schedule will be shared by Wednesday, October 23 with all coaches.
- Scheduled practice times will be confirmed on the facilities calendar and through Mr. Roberts.
- If more times are available, coaches will be notified at a later date.
The expectations that all outside entities will follow if they expect to continue to use the school facilities include:
- Do not enter the building more than 5 minutes prior to the scheduled practice time.
- Exit the building immediately after the scheduled practice time.
- All players must have clean court shoes that they change into upon entering the building.
- Non-coach parents should not wait in the gym for the end of practice. Please wait in the lobby.
- Each team must provide its own basketballs.
- Each player should have their own water bottle.
- Make sure the gym is clean after practice and that all equipment, shoes, water bottles, clothes, etc. are picked up.
- Have fun!
Thanks for following all of the guidelines established.
If for some reason the expectations are not followed, gym usage may be revoked. It is critical that we all do our part to keep the gym available for youth sports.
There are other options for youth sports. Contact the Van Meter Rec Department or other private youth sports entities to see what options are available.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us.
GO DAWGS!
Construction Update
Site work for the new addition has started. All work should be completed and traffic will be able to flow as normal on Monday, October 21
Thanks for your patience and understanding.
Importance of Attendance
Regular attendance is a cornerstone of your child’s success in school and beyond. Each day of learning is critical, and even a few missed days can add up, affecting academic progress and social development. In Iowa, when a student’s absences—whether excused or unexcused—reach 10% of the school year, we are required to send a formal letter to families and notify the county attorney. This new measure ensures that every child receives the necessary support to stay on track.
If absences continue and reach 15% of the grading period, we will initiate an engagement meeting involving the student, their family, and school officials. This meeting is designed to identify any barriers to attendance and develop an absenteeism prevention plan tailored to your child’s needs. We’re committed to working together to remove obstacles and help every student thrive.
However, if a student’s absences escalate to 20% of the grading period, the situation becomes more serious. At this point, the child is considered truant, and legal action may be taken by the county attorney. We want to avoid this outcome at all costs, which is why early intervention is so important. Our goal is to support students and families before absences reach this critical level.
We recognize that these procedures may be new and may feel challenging, but they are in place to ensure that every student has the opportunity to succeed. Thank you for your continued partnership in making regular attendance a priority.
