SHS Weekly Update
September 28th, 2024
Principal's Update
It's homecoming week and there was no shortage of things to do this week. After months of planning we finally brought the homecoming parade back to Strongsville. The event went very well with every school in the district well represented. The school spirit was on demand through the many organizations that support Strongsville City Schools.
A huge thank you to the parents who did much of the work to get this going. One of our parents, Katie Drake, was the major driver behind the planning to make the parade happen. There were many other parents who volunteered their time and made this event go smoothly.
Friday night was the homecoming game and in spite of the rain the team was victorious 28-6 over Cleveland Heights. The homecoming court was presented to the community with Nowai Sailey named Queen and Zachary Hendrix named King.
Tonight we will have our homecoming dance to cap off a great week of SHS events.

PBIS - Major Referrals
At Strongsville High School, we are committed to a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework. We emphasize the importance of being Mustang STRONG, which means we expect our students to make the right choices by attending all classes on time and getting engaged in their learning. We are dedicated to fostering a supportive environment where every student can thrive.
On the positive side the number of major behavioral referrals have declined significantly over the past few years. Student behaviors, through positive reinforcement combined with consistent consequences, have reduced what we consider major issues that can hurt the learning environment.
Students missing school, being tardy, and skipping class have risen across the entire state and remain an area that we need to improve on as a building. It seems that the number of students who fall into one of those three categories has remained at an unacceptable rate since the pandemic. Showing up and being present is still a very important skill for both school and certainly after high school. There is a culture, nationally, that now allows being late or not showing up at all as being acceptable. Skipping classes is an area that we need to focus on as missing a class puts a student seriously behind their peers in keeping up with their grades and learning.
To address the issue of class skipping, we will be implementing a system of progressive interventions for those students who receive referrals for this behavior, including more restrictive consequences. This may include Corrective Learning sessions and requests for parent meetings to collaborate and problem-solve the reasons behind your student’s absence from class. Students who chronically skip class will be receiving progressive discipline. As always, feel free to reach out to me with any questions.
SHS Homecoming Parade
Thank you to ALL who were a part of last night’s SHS Homecoming Parade! If you were there, you saw the first ever “Marching Orchestra,” the creativity of all of our Elementary School floats, our youth sports programs, our high school student-athletes, our “Marching Mustangs,” and of course our SHS Homecoming Court. It was a HUGE showing of community pride and spirit. Special thanks to the SHS Leadership Council and the Class of 2025 for their vision and all of their work in making this parade a reality.

Premium, Cost-Effective ACT Preparation
Thursday, October 17, 2024, 7:45 a.m. to 2:25 p.m.
Strongsville High School
Test-optional college admissions is quickly disappearing! Currently, over two-thirds of American colleges and universities have returned to test-required or test-recommended admissions. Earlier this year, Harvard, Dartmouth, and Stanford all announced that they were abandoning the test-optional experiment. To be sure, selective colleges, special programs, and merit-based scholarship
providers see a student’s performance on the SAT or ACT as a highly critical factor in their evaluation of that student’s academic prowess. In short, in a post-COVID world, college entrance exams are regaining their importance.
Our six-hour preparation seminar helps demystify the ACT by explaining
--the test’s structure,
--the academic content covered on it, &
--testing & time management strategies students can employ to maximize their performance.
Students learn specific, tangible strategies to answer more questions correctly, how to decipher questions designed to thwart
their performance, & specific academic content that is regularly tested on the ACT.
Each participant gets
--six hours of live, engaging, interactive instruction,
--a guided outline of strategies to approach the ACT,
--a comprehensive, 400-page, reference workbook,
--online access to over 1000 additional practice test questions,
--a 5-week ACT study plan, &
--free, live, phone-in, pre-test tutoring,
.

PSAT/NMSQT Seminar
for High-Performing Students
Thursday, October 3, 2024
8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon
Strongsville High School
PSAT/NMSQT Seminar for High-Performing Students
This seminar is geared exclusively for highly able junior-year students preparing for the PSAT/NMSQT. It focuses on the most challenging questions and problems that separate elite students from the rest of the pack. The seminar is recommended only for students who have reasonable aspirations to attain National Merit recognition (top 1 to 3%
nationally) for their performance on this test. Our intention is to prepare students who otherwise most likely would finish in the top 5% to 10% nationally for potential placement in this top group.
The seminar helps students understand the test structure, format, and adaptive component, as well as provides concrete test-taking and time management strategies to enable them to approach the test effectively. For the Reading & Writing portion of the test, we spend considerable time on how to address the most challenging questions in each of the four academic content domains and 10 skill sets students will encounter. We then delve into mathematics concepts surrounding problem shortcuts and tricks that high-end math students can comprehend and employ to speed through
such problems on the test. Many of these types of problems appear on the PSAT/SAT to separate the most elite performers. Every student gets a reference workbook outlining the test structure and key strategies as well as a large collection of practice questions and answers from the College Board bank of difficult-grade questions.
