Amy Ohlson
TCNJ Outstanding Cooperating Teacher Award
We are delighted to share some wonderful news! Mrs. Amy Ohlson, our Weston/Roosevelt Art Teacher, has been honored with the Outstanding Cooperating Teacher Award by The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). This recognition comes from Dr. Eileen Burke Heddy of the Office of Support for Teacher Education Programs and highlights Mrs. Ohlson's exceptional contribution to teacher education. Mrs. Ohlson was nominated by one of her fall student teachers, Ms. Kellyann Jackson. Out of 400 cooperating teachers from TCNJ, Mrs. Ohlson's commitment and excellence stood out, earning her this well-deserved accolade. We celebrated this achievement with a surprise announcement on May 22nd with members of the 3rd Grade Art Club! Congratulations, Mrs. Ohlson, for your outstanding dedication and impact on our students and future educators!
Success at Somerset County Championship Meet
Way to go, Mustangs!
The Mustangs crushed it at the Somerset County Championship Meet. The Mustangs had 3 individual champs on the Boys side, as well as 4 school records smashed. The Mustangs Boys squad finished in 4th place overall, their highest finish in years.
The most significant record breaker of the day was sophomore Damian Smutek. His daring 3200m race broke the 39-year-old Manville High School record previously set by Wasyel Danysh in 1985! Smutek ran across the line in a time of 9:53.12, breaking the record by 6 seconds! This astonishing record placed Smutek at 8th in the entire county!
Haisha Lasluiza, Kailey Seawright, Michelle Miga, and Emily Chey competed in the Girls 4x400 meter relay at the Somerset County Championship Meet on Tuesday, May 14th. The girls blazed around the track, finishing 3rd in Somerset County! Not only that, but they smashed our school record by almost 4 seconds with a record time of 4:16:49!
If that wasn't enough, Junior Haisha Lasluiza broke her school record in the 400m for the 3rd time in her career, running a time of 60.31 and finishing in 4th place.
Senior Michelle Miga broke her own school record in the 800m for the fifth time, lowering the school record by 2.5 seconds, with a running time of 2:24.04.
Rian Sanders. Sanders won the Discus competition with a personal best of 148 ft 4 inches, earning 1st place at the Somerset County Championship Meet. He also finished second in the Javelin, with a distance of 155 ft 2 inches.
Another shining star at the Somerset County Championship Meet is Trip Freitag. Freitag won the Javelin competition with a season best 165 ft 11 inch bomb. This placed him #11 in the entire state! He also placed second in Discus, with a distance of 145 ft. 7 in.
Junior Professor Ceo earned his spot in the limelight! He won his second consecutive county title in high jump with a leap of 6 ft 5 inches, clearing the field by a full 3 inches!
Magical Night at the Marquee Awards
Cami Galvez and Juliana Bucciero lit up the stage at the 2nd Annual Marquee Awards. Watch their beautiful performances below!
Big win of the night goes to Juliana Bucciero. Juliana took home a win for Best Leading Actress in a Musical. She brought Sophie Sheridan to life in Manville High School's production of "Mama Mia" this spring. Congratulations to Juliana for this wonderful accomplishment!
Somerset County Teen Arts
Skyland Conference
What a day for the Mustangs at the Skyland Conference Championship meet this week! The Mustangs broke five school records, crowned three individual boys champions, and the girls team won the Mountain Division title.
Leading away was Junior Rian Sanders, who placed in all three throwing events winning discus, with a school record 155 feet 3 inch throw, breaking a 59-year-old school record, formerly held by Bill Petrone.
Next up was Junior Professor Ceo, who broke the 50-year-old school high jump record, held by Stan Kita, in winning the conference, with a jump of 6 feet and 7 inches, which is the #3 jump in all of New Jersey.
Following him was Junior Trip Freitag, who won the javelin competition with the New Jersey number 10 throw of 171 feet and 2 inches, a personal best for him.
Our third breaker on a day was junior Haisha Lasluiza, who broke her 400m record for the fourth time, with a time of 59.85, which placed her fourth in the conference.
Next to run blazing fast, was sophomore Damian Smetek, who broke his own 1600m record with a time of 4:30.86, as well as breaking the previously set school record!
Closing out the meet with the fifth record of the day was the girls 4 x 400 team, Haisha Lasluiza, Kailey Seawright, Jayde Thompson, and Michelle Miga, who ran a time 4:16.16.
Overall, the Mustangs girls earned 5 Mountain Division individual championships in outpacing Group 3 Warren Hills, 183-126, winning the Skyland Conference Mountain Division crown.
NJMEA Middle School Choral Invitational
ABIS Chorale participated in the NJMEA Middle School Choral Invitational on May 23, 2024 where 2 collegiate judges scored and workshopped with the students, and provided written feedback in addition to their overall ranking for the day.
Their hard work paid off as the students ended the day with a "Superior" ranking!
Special thanks to Mr. Bonsignore who captured the magic, including the adjudication with Dr. Dustin Cates of Temple University.

As part of the Community Health Needs Assessment, Healthier Somerset, RWJSomerset, RWJBarnabas Health, its hospitals, affiliates, and community partners are conducting a Community Health Resident Survey; your input can help shape future programs and services. Food Assistance
The Manville Food Pantry will be open the second Saturday of each month at the Faith in Action Church at 228 S. Main Street. Please make sure to bring your ID and a bag.
Feeding Hands is also offering assistance the fourth Saturday of each month at Emmanuel Baptist Church, 34 South Third Avenue. See the flyer for dates and more details.

Apply for Homeowner Flood Buyouts
New Jersey homeowners can submit buyout applications online, in English or Spanish, through the Blue Acres program from the Department of Environmental Protection. Blue Acres will approve buyout requests based on need and funding eligibility requirements.
Apply for Homeowner Flood Mitigation Help
New Jersey homeowners who are in flood prone areas and are interested in elevating their home to reduce their risk of flooding can apply for the Mitigation Assistance Program (MAP). MAP helps homeowners cover construction costs for property mitigation against flooding damage, including home elevation. MAP may also provide temporary rental assistance during construction. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.
Help for Homeowners in Financial Distress
New Jersey's Emergency Rescue Mortgage Assistance (ERMA) program provides financial assistance for eligible homeowners who have experienced a significant decrease of income or increase of expenses due to COVID-19 and have been unable to remain current with their mortgage payments.
Eligible homeowners can apply for up to $75,000 per household to cover mortgage reinstatement assistance and other eligible housing related costs, including delinquent property taxes and HOA dues.
