Hello TeWinkle Families,
Welcome to the October edition of our newsletter! Did you know? Vans shoe brand and TeWinkle have history? It's true! Steve Van Doren (son of Paul Van Doren co-founder of Vans) was a member of our 1967 8th grade promotion class.
As we dive into fall, we have plenty of exciting events and updates to share. October is a great opportunity to reflect on the progress students have made so far. Teachers will soon assess learning and provide feedback to help students set goals for the upcoming months. The end of our first quarter is just around the corner (Friday, October 11th). Please remind your child to stay on top of their assignments and reach out to teachers if they need additional support. Our teachers are committed to helping every student succeed. We also want to remind you that our Genius Hour supports students Monday-Thursday 2:45-3:45 if they need additional help.
ASB has new officers! Please help us congratulate our new student officers who were elected and will represent their fellow students in making decisions, planning activities and promoting school spirit. Teaching students that their voices matter both in voting for and leading others is a very important. Being on time to school and class is very important! 265 of our Trojans have achieved perfect (or nearly perfect) at being on time to EVERY CLASS, EVERY DAY since the first day of school on August 19th! They have earned Trojan Charges (our school's currency) to spend in our Trojan Store!
As we are getting closer to Halloween, we wanted to send some friendly reminders and guidelines for dressing up at school this year. On Thursday, October 31st, students will be allowed to wear their costumes to school (this is optional). Each year we ask that students do not bring anything that depicts any kind of weapon as part of their costume, such as plastic knives, swords, guns, or other props. Costumes should also not be gory, scary, or include fake blood. For the safety of all students and staff we must be sure to follow the dress code and students’ faces must be recognizable (no masks). While students are allowed to dress up, we must be able to recognize them in their costumes. Furthermore, students who do not abide by the expectations will have their costumes/accessories confiscated and students can pick their costume up at the end of the school day.

October 7th & 8th-Vision & Hearting Clinic: All Students will be tested by our Health Staff
October 9th-DELAC Parent Meeting @ Sanborn Building NMUSD District Office
October 17th-Great Shakeout Earthquake Drill
October 23rd-First ELAC Parent Meeting 6:00 p.m. @ Estancia H.S.
October 28th-Red Ribbon Week begins and we will have activities to remind students the dangers of using drugs.
November 1st-NON-STUDENT DAY!

Hola familias de TeWinkle,
¡Bienvenidos a la edición de octubre de nuestro boletín! ¿Sabían que la marca de zapatos Vans y TeWinkle tienen historia? ¡Es cierto! Steve Van Doren (hijo de Paul Van Doren, cofundador de Vans) fue miembro de nuestra clase de promoción de 8º grado de 1967.
A medida que nos adentramos en el otoño, tenemos muchos eventos emocionantes y actualizaciones que compartir. Octubre es una gran oportunidad para reflexionar sobre el progreso que los estudiantes han logrado hasta ahora. Los maestros pronto evaluarán el aprendizaje y proporcionarán retroalimentación para ayudar a los estudiantes a establecer metas para los próximos meses. El final de nuestro primer trimestre está a la vuelta de la esquina (viernes 11 de octubre). Por favor, recuerden a sus hijos que se mantengan al día con sus tareas y que se acerquen a los maestros si necesitan apoyo adicional. Nuestros maestros están comprometidos a ayudar a cada estudiante a tener éxito. También queremos recordarles que nuestra Hora de Genios apoya a los estudiantes de lunes a jueves de 2:45 a 3:45 si necesitan ayuda adicional.
¡La ASB tiene nuevos oficiales! Por favor, ayúdenos a felicitar a nuestros nuevos oficiales estudiantiles que fueron elegidos y representarán a sus compañeros en la toma de decisiones, planificación de actividades y promoción del espíritu escolar. Enseñar a los estudiantes que sus voces importan, tanto al votar como al liderar a otros, es muy importante. ¡Llegar a tiempo a la escuela y a clase es muy importante! 265 de nuestros Trojan han logrado estar perfectos (o casi perfectos) en llegar a TIENE CLASE, TODOS LOS DÍAS desde el primer día de clases el 19 de agosto. ¡Han ganado Trojan Charges (la moneda de nuestra escuela) para gastar en nuestra Tienda Trojan!
A medida que nos acercamos a Halloween, queremos enviar algunos recordatorios amigables y pautas para disfrazarse en la escuela este año. El jueves 31 de octubre, los estudiantes podrán usar sus disfraces en la escuela (esto es opcional). Cada año pedimos que los estudiantes no traigan nada que represente ningún tipo de arma como parte de su disfraz, como cuchillos, espadas, armas de plástico u otros accesorios. Los disfraces tampoco deben ser sangrientos, aterradores o incluir sangre falsa. Por la seguridad de todos los estudiantes y el personal, debemos asegurarnos de seguir el código de vestimenta y que los rostros de los estudiantes sean reconocibles (sin máscaras). Aunque se permite que los estudiantes se disfracen, debemos poder reconocerlos en sus disfraces. Además, los estudiantes que no cumplan con las expectativas tendrán sus disfraces/accesorios confiscados y podrán recogerlos al final del día escolar.

3 de octubre: Primera reunión de la PTA a las 6:00 p.m. en la biblioteca de TeWinkle.
7 y 8 de octubre - Clínica de visión y audición: Todos los estudiantes serán evaluados por nuestro personal de salud.
9 de octubre - Reunión de padres de DELAC en el edificio Sanborn de la oficina del distrito NMUSD.
17 de octubre - Gran simulacro de terremoto.
23 de octubre - Primera reunión de padres de ELAC a las 6:00 p.m. en Estancia H.S.
28 de octubre - Comienza la Semana del Listón Rojo y tendremos actividades para recordar a los estudiantes los peligros del uso de drogas.
1 de noviembre - ¡DÍA SIN CLASES!

TeWinkle Middle School
During Middle School, we recognize that students are developing individually, intellectually, and are creating their own independent beliefs. We foster an environment where we empower our students by recognizing their diverse needs and individual strengths and use that knowledge to build lifelong learners. As a Project Lead the Way (PLTW) School, we offer an array of classes that are innovative and rigorous and focus on a STEAM initiative. In addition to PLTW, students can also be participants of music, AVID, Publications or ASB, giving all students an opportunity to become involved in areas of their own personal interest. In the classroom, our students will be engaged in 21st-century learning. We promote peer to peer engagement, high levels of critical thinking, culturally relevant instruction, and students will be challenged to think outside of the box. Our goal is to prepare students for high school and build a culture where we nurture our educational partners desires as it relates to college and career. Every student matters and we believe that every dream can be their reality.
Durante la escuela secundaria, reconocemos que los estudiantes se están desarrollando individualmente, intelectualmente y están creando sus propias creencias independientes. Fomentamos un entorno en el que capacitamos a nuestros estudiantes al reconocer sus diversas necesidades y fortalezas individuales y usamos ese conocimiento para formar aprendices de por vida. Como escuela del Proyecto Lead the Way (PLTW), ofrecemos una variedad de clases que son innovadoras y rigurosas y se enfocan en una iniciativa STEAM. Además de PLTW, los estudiantes también pueden ser participantes de música, AVID, Publicaciones o ASB, lo que brinda a todos los estudiantes la oportunidad de involucrarse en áreas de su propio interés personal. En el salón de clases, nuestros estudiantes participarán en el aprendizaje del siglo XXI. Promovemos la participación entre compañeros , altos niveles de pensamiento crítico, instrucción culturalmente relevante y los estudiantes serán desafiados a pensar más aya de lo común. Nuestro objetivo es preparar a los estudiantes para la preparatoria y construir una cultura en la que alimentemos los deseos de nuestros interesados en lo que respecta a la universidad y las carreras.
