From Your Pastors
Dear Zion family –
This weekend, 33 of our youth are heading out to Glen Rose, Texas for our Winter Retreat. Please pray for them as they grow in their faith and strengthen their friendships. Retreats are a wonderful time to reset and refresh your relationship with God and others. And if you see our awesome DCE, Laura-Li, please thank her for all the life-changing work she does with our youth!
Don’t forget that the Blood Bus will be here this Sunday. There are still spots available to donate blood, so, if you can, please make time to give the gift of life. Donating blood only takes a few minutes and it’s simple to sign up for an appointment. Just click here.
In worship, we continue our series called “History’s Most Memorable Message,” where we’re studying Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. This weekend, we'll look at what Jesus has to say about hypocrisy in Matthew 6:1-8:
“Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.”
Jesus explains that when we do things as a performance for other people to see, we can easily fall into hypocrisy. But doesn’t everyone like to be recognized and celebrated? Find out what's even better than being recognized and celebrated this weekend in worship. We worship at 8 am in our beautiful historic sanctuary, at 10:45 am in our wonderful worship center, or online at zionwalburg.org.
Your pastors love you!

School Staff Updates
Dear Zion Trailblazers -
I have some important news to share about some critical staff transitions. At the end of this school year, we have four staff members retiring or moving to a different role at a different place.
Carla Knippa has served as our Athletic Director for two years. This year marks 41 years in education. Under her leadership, our students have seen their skills in all kinds of sports grow as they’ve also grown closer to their teammates. She’s worked tirelessly hosting tournaments/meets and providing positive environments for athletes across our school.
Sheri Fischer has been our second-grade teacher for 25 years! This year marks a total of 32 years in Lutheran Education. Literally generations of kids have been blessed by her passion for teaching foundational subjects and skills. She has been incredibly selfless, always being willing to step up and step in as needed in our school.
Diane Andersen has been our music teacher/band director for 26 years. This past year, she also graciously agreed to teach some additional music classes. If you’ve ever heard our band play, then you know just how passionate about music Mrs. Andersen is. Her love for music is infectious and has been shared with class after class of Zion students.
Jason Reichert has been our eighth-grade homeroom and middle school science teacher this past year. He has worked long hours coming up with creative ways to make science come alive for our students. His love for our church and school is evident in his commitment to all areas of our ministry.
Please join me in thanking each of these teachers and directors for their faithful service!
We are already forming search committees to help us fill each of these positions. Our commitment is to provide a top-tier, memory-making, and Christ-centered education for every child who is a part of our Zion family. We’ll keep you posted as we fill these positions.
Thank you for all your support for Zion. It’s a pleasure and privilege to be your principal!
In Christ,
Suzan Winkelman
