Lutherville Lab Report
What's gone down & what's coming up at the leopards' lair.
November 8, 2024
Though disjointed with Tuesdays closure, we had a good week here at The Lab!
On Thursday, both 3rd and 4th grade enjoyed field trips, to Fort McHenry and Camp Puh'tok, respectively. We are so proud of our students engagement, respect, and responsibility on the trips. We are also grateful to chaperones who were able to attend and support and navigated the volunteer process to do so. Please enjoy some pictures! If you want to chaperone in the future, please be sure to complete your volunteer training (more information below).
Looking ahead, we are excited for American Education Week, which runs November 18 - November 22. During that week, which includes Conference Day on Tuesday November 19 (no school for students), we invite family members to come visit their child's classroom to observe/partake in their learning. In an effort to limit distraction to student learning from visitors, we request families strive to find childcare for younger siblings whenever possible. The schedule for visitations is provided again below. Due to existing family commitments, a couple teachers have had to alter their schedule, but have already communicated that to their students families.
We strive to be as efficient as possible in getting visitors into the school. If you have already visited this year and had your identification scanned, please RSVP on this form by the evening before your visit and we will pre-print your visitor sticker. If you have not visited prior to AEW, you will need to have your ID scanned. All visitors should have identification with them when they come to visit.
In partnership,
-Mr. McComb

Respiratory Illnesses
As many of you have read or heard in the media, we have seen an uptick in cases of pneumonia and pertussis this fall. Recognizing that we are about to head into the cold, flu and COVID season, the Baltimore County Department of Health has prepared the Respiratory Illness Comparison Chart infographic about the different respiratory illnesses that have been, or likely will be, affecting children and families this year.
An additional resource families might find helpful is When to Keep a Child Home from School.

Field Trip Chaperone Requirements
We want to reiterate that in order to chaperone a field trip, the prospective chaperone must be in our school approved volunteer database 7 calendar days before the trip's departure. Volunteer training must be completed for each and every school year for which one would like to volunteer/chaperone. This change is occurring due to too many late nights and last minute requests for our office staff to stop their daily work, or work late into the night from home in order to get parents through the process, often the night before or morning of a field trip. Some pre-planning can save us from making this unfair and unrealistic ask of Ms. McDevitt and Mr. Planter. Thank you in advance for your understanding and partnership.
Below are the instructions for the required volunteer documentation and the links to access the Volunteer Application and the Volunteer Orientation training course. Should you have any questions or need any support, please reach out to Ms. McDevitt at kmcdevitt@bcps.org or 443-809-7800.

READ-A-THON HAS BEGUN! IT'S NOT TOO LATE TO REGISTER
Use the link below to activate your student's reader account:
https://www.read-a-thon.com/readers/r/323736353633/1
Whether your child needs a little encouragement to pick up a book, loves to read or loves to be read to, all students can contribute to this amazing school-wide experience! As we told the kids this week, it all counts - Amira minutes, reading a cereal box, even subtitles! And we greatly appreciate you contacting friends and family to support your reader and our school. Every little bit helps.
Our goal is $11,000 with 92,000 minutes by Wed Nov 20th and we're making great progress! Individual readers and fundraisers will be recognized as well as the top classes for reading minutes. There is the option to focus on the reading without the fundraising if that's best for your family.
As of Fri Nov 8 at 12 pm, we are at:
- $3,912 (we've raised a bit more but this is what we get to keep)
- 14,297 minutes
- Top classes for minutes: Nicholson (5th), Lugli (2nd) and Paul (3rd)
- Top classes for fundraising: Lugli (2nd), Weisbecker (1st) and Alabi (3rd)
Thank you for your help and involvement with this tremendous fundraiser!
NEXT READ-ALOUD ON MON NOV 11 AT 7:00 PM
Thank you to all the teachers and staff who read to us this week and the 56 students who logged in! A special thanks to Mrs. Henderson, our Reading Specialist, for coordinating these experiences. Please join us on Mon at 7 pm via Google Meet with the code llreadaloud for our next 30 minutes of cozy fun and easy minutes.
RSVP BY SUN 11/10 FOR BOOKS & DONUTS WITH GROWNUPS ON WED 11/13
In order for us to have enough donuts available, please take a moment to RSVP for this LL annual tradition taking place before school on Wed Nov 13th from 8:30 am. Each student is permitted to bring one grownup with them and the adult is expected to stay with the student until 9:05 am (when school begins). The cafeteria will serve as the main room and several classrooms will also be designated for a quieter reading experience.
YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS INITIATIVE - CAN YOU HELP INSPIRE AND SUPPORT?
We are excited to help LL students learn about entrepreneurship! All students present at school on Wed Nov 27th will participate in an event during the school day and those who are interested will then work towards participation in the Sun March 23rd LL Entrepreneurs Fair.
If any of the following applies to you, please email Danielle Quinn - DQuinn16@gmail.com:
- Available on Nov 27th any time between 9:30 am and 1:00 pm (does not have to be the whole time)? We'd love your help for our kick off event, happening by grade levels. No entrepreneurship experience is needed! We'll provide the materials for you to help students with hands-on product development, business math, customer service/interpersonal skills, and marketing.
- Is your child a young entrepreneur? Are you an entrepreneur yourself? Please let us know so we can keep you in the loop on all the details of this initiative. Is
