An Update from Hough Elementary

Our amazing PTO is providing each of our 237 students and 52 staff members with a colorful Hough Street School t-shirt. Each grade level has its own color of shirt, which comes in handy on Field Day, in late May! Please be sure to keep track of these special shirts, as they will be worn throughout the year at various events. We encourage all students to wear their new shirt this Friday, September 20th for Spirit Day! Check your child's backpack, as shirts are being sent home today.

Hough completed its first round of standardized testing for the 2024-25 school year last week. Our youngest learners in kindergarten and first grade completed Fastbridge Testing and our second - fifth graders completed their fall MAP testing. These assessments provide us with valuable data for each child in the area of math and reading, so we can best deliver instruction. We will be sending home your child's specific report on Wednesday, September 25th for your review. Children will be assessed again in the winter and spring. Hough Student Leadership Council is inviting any interested Hough students to march in the BHS Homecoming Parade on Saturday, September 28th. Please complete the online permission form and meet at the Morretti's Restaurant parking lot at 9:45 AM. Be sure to dress in Hough spirit wear and bring individually wrapped candy to pass out to the spectators along the parade route. Students should be picked up in the BHS parking lot along Lake Cook Road, immediately following the parade. Please contact Mr. George or Mrs. Goitein with any questions.

Hough Student Leadership Council is sponsoring a volunteer opportunity at Feed My Starving Children in Schaumburg on Thursday, October 10th from 4:45-6:15 PM (arrive by 4:15). Students in kindergarten - second grade will need to have a parent present for the event (this is a FMSC rule). Choir is open for registration! The Harmonizing Hawks student choir will meet every Tuesday before school at 7:10 AM, starting on September 24th. This club is open to 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade Hough students who enjoy signing and want to improve their voices. We will have at least two performances during the school year, with possibly more, due to popular demand! Our students have been learning about and demonstrating this month's Character Strong trait, RESPECT. Classroom teachers are recognizing students with respect certificates throughout the month, as they observe them being respectful. Miss Meckert's third graders are the first recipients of the Character Strong trophy for continually modeling respect in the hallways.

Fall parent teacher conferences will take place on Wednesday, October 16th from 3:30-7:30 PM and Thursday, October 17th from 1:00-7:00 PM (Thursday, 10/17 and Friday, 10/18 are non-attendance days for students). We will utilize the online booking tool, Meet the Teacher, as we have done in the past. Registration will open on Monday, September 30th at 8:00 AM. Registration will close at the end of the day on October 8th. We look forward to meeting with all of our parents over the course of the two days.

Room Parent Volunteers - We are still seeking Room Parent Leads in a few classrooms: Mrs. Jagielski, Mrs. Reckamp, Mr. George, Miss Meckert and Mrs. Kotel (Frank). We will dive into the details of Room Parent duties at the “Principal's Room Parent kick-off” PTO Meeting on Thursday, October 10th 6:30 - 7:30PM at Hough. Hough Scarecrow Decorating - Fall is only a few days away, which means it's time to create the Hough Street School Scarecrow. Please Meet on the Hough little playground on Tuesday, September 24th, after school, and help us create this year's masterpiece. Email houghvpofstrategy@gmail.com to help with supplies.

Donuts with Dad - Come once a month to spend an intentional hour with fellow Hough dads, building relationships and community with your kids and their friends. We meet one Friday of each month at 7:00 AM over donuts, juice, and coffee across the street from Hough Elementary School at the Salem Preschool Welcome Center. Our first meeting of the year is Friday, September 20th at 7:00am at Salem where we will talk about Proactivity. Please RSVP here.
