What have we been learning?
English Language Arts
Math
Students recently finished our first part of Module 4, which focused on identifying the place value of decimals. Students are continuing to build on this knowledge by multiplying decimals by powers of ten. In Skills, students are working on interpreting coordinate pairs, creating coordinate systems, and plotting points in coordinate planes.
Science
In between February Break and April Break, we will be working on the physical science unit in grade 5 science. We are using the FOSS textbook, “Mixtures and Solutions” to learn about states of matter. Our Mystery Science unit is called, “Chemical Magic”. We will supplement electronic activities from Flocabulary and Brain POP for this unit too. Students worked on schematic drawings for simple machines in week 26, when we did not have internet in Lowell Public Schools. Make sure your students keep practicing iXL Science Skills each week. We have currently answered over 80,000 questions answered in grade 5 science. These skills will help prepare your student with content knowledge for the grade 5 Science and Technology/Engineering MCAS The science test is currently scheduled for May 15th and 16th. This link will provide you with access to the release questions from last year’s test. You can use these questions to prepare your student for the science test in May.
Social Studies
The ideals of democracy that fueled the American Revolution turned the power structure of the world upside down. In this Inquiry unit, students will be challenged to examine the people, events, causes, and effects of the American Revolution. They will create a connection between the ideals of the American Revolution and our own modern challenges to promote life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all.
