Superintendent's Corner (Parents/Guardians)
Volume 1, No. 3 October 31, 2024
Opening Message
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we celebrate Halloween tonight, I want to extend a thank you to all parents for your unwavering support in getting your students to school. Our current district attendance rate is at 90%, and this achievement is a testament to your dedication. Regular attendance is crucial for your child’s academic success and overall well-being, and we deeply appreciate your efforts.
Halloween
With many children out trick-or-treating tonight, we ask our community members to be extra cautious and ensure the safety of all our students. Let’s make this Halloween a fun and safe experience for everyone.
District Initiatives
Again, throughout the year I will be sharing information and updates on our district initiatives. We are excited to share several key initiatives aimed at enhancing our students’ educational experiences and improving student outcomes in the CBSD:
- The Science of Reading: We are committed to implementing evidence-based reading instruction to ensure all students develop strong literacy skills.
- 120 Minutes of Reading, Writing, and Discussion Daily: Our goal is to engage students in meaningful literacy activities every day to foster critical thinking and communication skills.
- Increasing Access to Upper-Level Math and AP Courses: We are expanding opportunities for students to challenge themselves academically and prepare for college-level coursework.
- Special Education and TAG Services: Our Special Education (SPED) and Talented and Gifted (TAG) services are vital for creating an inclusive learning environment that meets the diverse academic and developmental needs within our student body. By enhancing our instructional models for SPED and TAG, we are ensuring that each learner receives the individualized support and challenge they need to thrive.
- Standards and Curriculum: One of our primary goals in CBSD is to ensure that every student has access to a robust, guaranteed, and viable curriculum that supports their academic growth. As Dr. Robert Marzano emphasizes, “A guaranteed and viable curriculum is the single most important initiative a school or district can engage in to raise student achievement.” This approach ensures consistency and rigor in every classroom, paving the way for each CBSD student to reach their full potential.
- Ensuring ALL Students Graduate with a Plan (3Es): Our mission is to ensure that every student graduates with a clear plan for their future, whether it be Enrolled in higher education, Employed in a meaningful career, or Enlisted in the military.
Activities
In addition to our academic initiatives, our extracurricular programs in the CBSD are critical in keeping students engaged, challenged, and connected. I encourage all parents and guardians to reach out to our coaches and advisors, thanking them for their mentorship and guidance. Their coaching and mentorship is invaluable.
Civil War Game
We also want to remind you about the exciting Civil War football game this Friday between the Pirates and Bulldogs. This historic rivalry is a wonderful opportunity to show our support for our student-athletes. Our students truly appreciate the energy and enthusiasm of a full stadium on a Friday night, so we encourage everyone to come out and cheer on the Pirates as they take on our distinguished rivals the NB Bulldogs. Your presence makes a significant difference!
Support Staff Appreciation
Once again, we could not run the CBSD without our support staff. Our bus drivers, cafeteria staff, educational assistants, IT, maintenance, and district support staff are outstanding! We couldn’t engage in this mission and support your student(s) without their commitment and professionalism. Their dedication ensures that our students have a safe, nurturing, and efficient environment to learn and grow. From the early morning bus rides to the nutritious meals, the technical support, and the maintenance of our facilities, every one of their roles is crucial.
Thank you for your unwavering commitment to our students and community. Together, we are creating a district where ALL students are known by name, strengths, and needs, and ALL students graduate with a plan: Enrolled, Employed, or Enlisted (3Es). As always, if you have any questions, concerns, feel free to reach out.
One Compass—One Goal—One Mission,
Dr. Ainsworth

Safe Oregon Hotline
The Safe Oregon hotline is a confidential and anonymous service designed to help students, parents, school staff, and community members report safety concerns, including bullying, threats of violence, drugs, and self-harm. Available 24/7, the hotline allows users to submit tips via phone, text, email, web form, or mobile app. By providing a secure way to report issues, Safe Oregon aims to create a safer school environment and empower individuals to speak out and prevent potential harm.
Halloween
Happy Halloween! 🎃 As we celebrate this festive day, we hope you and your children enjoy a night filled with fun, creativity, and community spirit. Please remind your little ones to stay safe, travel in groups, and be visible while trick-or-treating. Thank you for your continued support and for making our school community so wonderful. Have a spooky and safe Halloween!
Mission Statement
Our district's new mission statement is central to all that we do: Each student is known by name, strengths, and needs, and ALL students graduate with a plan: Enrolled, Employed, or Enlisted (3Es). This mission reflects our commitment to ensuring that every student in Coos Bay is prepared for life beyond school. It guides our work and reminds us daily of the importance of knowing our students as individuals, recognizing their unique abilities, and supporting them to achieve their full potential.
