EY Weekly News
May 10, 2024 Ewing Young Elementary
Thank you!
I hope this message finds you well. As Staff Appreciation Week comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to extend my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you for your incredible support and generosity.
Your efforts this week have truly made a world of difference. From the thoughtful notes and tokens of appreciation to the delicious meals and kind gestures, your contributions have touched the hearts of our entire staff. Your willingness to go above and beyond to show your gratitude is a testament to the wonderful community we have here.
It's often said that it takes a village to raise a child, and I believe the same sentiment holds true for supporting our educators. Your support not only boosts morale but also reinforces the invaluable partnership between home and school. Together, we create an environment where our students can thrive.
Please know that your kindness does not go unnoticed. Whether it was a small gesture or a significant contribution, each act of kindness has made a meaningful impact. Your generosity has lifted spirits and reminded us all of the importance of gratitude and community.
On behalf of the entire staff, I want to express our heartfelt appreciation for your support during Staff
Appreciation Week and throughout the year. We are truly grateful to have such a wonderful group of parents who are dedicated to the success and well-being of our school community.
Thank you once again for your kindness, generosity, and unwavering support.
With warmest regards,
Scott Henderson
Principal

10 tips to help get your child to school on time, every day
Set attendance goals with your child and track your child's attendance on a calendar. Try offering small rewards for not missing any school, such as a later bedtime on weekends.
Help your child get a good night's sleep. A lack of sleep is associated with lower school achievement starting in middle school, as well as higher numbers of missed school and tardiness. Most younger children need 10-12 hours per night.
Prep the night before to streamline your morning. Have your child lay out their clothes. Have book bags and lunches packed.
Schedule dental or medical appointments before or after school hours. If children have to miss school for medical appointments, have them return immediately afterward so they do not miss the entire day.
Schedule extended trips during school breaks. This helps your child stay caught up in school learning and sets the expectation for your child to be in school during the school year. Even in elementary school, missing a week of classes can set your child behind on learning.
Don't have your child stay home unless they are truly sick. Reasons to keep your child home from school include a fever, vomiting, diarrhea, a hacking cough, toothache, earache, or other infectious illnesses. Keep in mind, complaints of frequent stomachaches or headaches can be a sign of anxiety and may not be a reason to stay home.
Talk with your child about the reasons why they do not want to go to school. School-related anxiety can lead to school avoidance. Talk to your child about their physical and emotional symptoms. Try to get them to talk about any emotional struggles they may have with issues like friends or tests. If you are concerned about your child's mental health, talk with your pediatrician, your child's teacher or school counselor.
Follow the rules. Be sure you know what your school's requirements are for when your child will be absent or late. If you are supposed to call, email or provide a doctor's note after a certain number of days out, then do it. If we want our children to follow rules, we must lead by example.
Keep track of your child's attendance so you know when the days missed start to add up. Look into why your child is absent. Think about your child's mood. Have they been spending time by themselves lately? Is their chronic condition starting to be more problematic? Is this school refusal? You know your child best.

THE EYST BOARD HAS OPENINGS!
Please take a look at the following positions and contact the EYST for more information.
PRESIDENT
We want YOU to be our next parent group president! Our fearless leader’s term expires at the end of the school year. We’re looking for a creative problem-solver who’s comfortable delegating and who can help us focus on the agenda instead of talking about our kids or the latest streaming show. A sense of humor is a big plus—and if you know how to say “no” without provoking a tantrum, even better. If you’re ready to play a substantial role in supporting our school, we want to hear from you!
VICE PRESIDENT
So you’d like to get more involved in the school parent group, but you’re not sure you’re ready to take the lead role? Our vice president position has your name written all over it! You’ll learn behind-the-scenes intel and be part of decisionmaking on important issues throughout the year. You’ll help the president get things done—kind of like a superhero’s sidekick, but without the costume (unless you want to rock the mask and cape, of course).
SECRETARY
Be honest: You’re the one in your friend group who filled out every page in your child’s baby book...at the right time, no less. If you’re the kind of person who documents everything, from your toddler’s first steps to how far you jogged yesterday, we have the perfect role for you. You’ll get to put your stellar recordkeeping skills and attention to detail to good use as our parent group secretary. You must have good listening and computer skills—extra credit if can watch TV and play Candy Crush at the same time.
Visit ybpay.com and enter Yearbook ID Code: 14147624 to order yours. If you have any questions please reach out to April Woodruff EwingYoungST@gmail.com. All 5th-grade students will receive a yearbook courtesy of the EYST.

All students receive on free book bag. Replacement book bags are $5. If you need to order a replacement, for your student, please contact Ms. Lang in the office.

We wear our EY shirts on Friday's and for the Fun Run on June 7.
