Mrs. Goins' Class

Welcome and I can't wait to help you build upon your English skills in my classroom. I started my work in education here at Rowland High school back in 2006 within the special education department and have played many roles within Rowland Unified such as after school programs and substitute teaching at every school within the district. In 2016 I moved on to become an English teacher in both the Los Angeles and Fontana school Districts, and am now back here at RHS teaching English. I am married with 2 children, both of which attend schools here in RUSD. I enjoy spending time with family and friends as well as being creative by sewing and creating designs on my Cricut. I'm excited to get to know each and every one of you and I hope you have a great school year!

I am also the G.L.U.E. Club Advisor here at RHS. I hope students consider joining so they can get involved and meet new students who are from all over the world and help build relationships and connections with one another.

English 9

This English course is Common Core standards based to prepare students for college and career readiness. Students will continue to develop reading & writing skills with a focus on the English Common Core standards for grades 9-12. A goal of ours is going to be learning to analyze literature and understand how they relate to us and our modern world.

ELD- English Language Development and Reading

Focuses on the continued oral language development of the four domains (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). English reading comprehension and writing competencies are emphasized around literary themes , culture, and core contents. Grammar, vocabulary, spelling, library, dictionary and research skills, writing, and technology are taught throughout the year in anticipation of entry into college prep courses. The Common Core ELD standards continue to serve as targets with a focus on exposure to the school goals.

Assigned work (Classwork&Participation): 40%

Assessments (Tests/Quizzes, Projects & Writing): 60%

All students' grades will be based on the percentage of total points possible, as follows:

100%-90%= A

80%-89%= B

70%-79%= C

60%-69%= D

0%-59%= F

As a parent I strongly believe in making time for family and keeping academics in the classroom as much as possible. This year my main focus is assigning and finishing assigned work in class. If a student did not use the class time wisely then it becomes homework. It is very important that all students keep up with their work daily. If a student needs more time on an assignment, I will make sure they get that extra time, with my help.

If students are absent, it is your responsibility to check in with me and check under assignments in Google Class for any work that you may have missed while you were out. Students will have one day for each excused absence day, to turn in assignments with no penalty. If you are absent for a test or quiz, you will take it once you return. If there is no time allowed to take it in your class period you must take it during lunch. Students may turn in assignments after the assigned due date, but will not receive full credit. All work done in a quarter may be turned in for partial credit before the grading period ends, once the grading period has finished I will no longer accept the late work. This is to ensure students get missing work done in a timely manner so that they are not overwhelmed by the amount of work they need to complete, if they have fallen behind.

If you are caught cheating you will be given a "0" on the assignment. At my own discretion, I will determine if you will be allowed to re-do the assignment for 50% credit. Plagiarism demonstrates a lack of integrity and a misguided view of a student's academic strengths. It also interferes with the assessment and feedback processes that are necessary for academic growth. If you are caught cheating on a test you will be given a different test, one on one with myself or my aide and a notice will be sent to your parent/guardian via email, or phone call about the incident.

Always do your best and know that SOMETHING is always better than NOTHING. If you are trying that means you are putting in the effort to be the best version of yourself.
