Mayo News
January 28, 2023
Hello Mayo Families,
What a great week! First, Trax from the Railers Hockey team came to visit us Thursday morning and then our Mayo Chorus sang the National Anthem at the game Saturday evening! A lot of families made it to the game (So bummed I couldn't go!!!) and Mr. D did a great job leading the chorus. Keith Lockhart better watch out!
It is snowing pretty hard as I write this while watching some football. We will have to check the news in the morning (I always check just in case I missed a call from Dr. Reilly) to see if there is a delay or school closure.
Reminder: This Wednesday is a half day for students. We will also be celebrating the Global Day of Play. Teachers will be coordinating different ways to celebrate. During Global School Play Day, participants are encouraged to allow students ample time for free play without the use of screens, structured games, or adult direction. The idea is to let children explore their creativity, problem-solving skills, and social interactions in an unstructured and spontaneous environment. Here is a link with more information.
Below you will see details about our upcoming food drive. Our drive will be held 2/2-2/9. We will also have a Sports Team Dress-Down day on 2/2 to kick off the "Soup"er Bowl, and PJ Day to end the drive.
We will also be holding a Library STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) event 2/13-2/16. Members of Mayo families will be visiting during Library time to read one of our new STEM related library books. Thank you to the Library Committee for organizing this!!
Welcome to Mr. Richard Crompton to our Mayo family. He is our new 2nd shift custodian and is joining us from the High School! Welcome aboard!!
Other information:
Kindergarten registration is open. Here is the link to the WRSD Enrollment site.
We have COVID tests available in the office for anyone in need.
Kindly,
Carolan Kasper

Environmental Club
Mayo's Environmental Club is once again promoting recycling at Mayo. Their first goal is to make sure that each classroom has a recycling bin and that students know how to use it. Club members will be working to teach Mayo students which items can and cannot go into recycle bins. Some members will be making informational posters to be displayed around the school, and some will be presenting interactive sessions on recycling to each classroom.
Club member Grace had a great idea to encourage recycled valentines. Since the club isn't meeting again until Valentine’s Day, we wanted to share some ideas found online. Mrs. Dorogi will be making recycled crayons for her Kindergarten class this year!
Thank you to Mrs. Kris Dorogi and Mrs. Joann Severance for serving as advisors.
Bus Safety
Reminder
Please remind your child(ren) about maintaining safe behaviors on the school bus. We have had an uptick in behaviors since our return from winter break. There is detailed information in the Mayo Handbook (link at bottom of SMORE) but here is some basic info pertaining to our biggest safety concerns. Students must:
- Remain in his/her seat when the bus is moving
- Restrict his/her talking to those children who are sitting next to him/her. Shouting will distract the bus driver
- Not use inappropriate language
- Not fight-bully-tease others on the bus.
We appreciate your help keeping our bus rides safe!
