DECEMBER NEWSLETTER
December 2, 2024
Although November and December are short months due to vacations, there is still a lot going on at Canyon High School. Please see below for some highlights from November as well as a list of upcoming events in December.
ASB STUDENT ACTIVITIES
THANKFUL TREE
Following up with a tradition they started last year, ASB organized their "Thankful Tree". ASB students went to each of the English classrooms and provided students with an opportunity to write on a leaf something they are thankful for. Below is a picture of all the leaves. Some of the more popular listings were family, friends and video games.
PTSA REFLECTIONS
Canyon’s PTSA held its annual Reflections Art Contest. There were over 70 entries from our Canyon students in the categories of Art, Dance, Film, Literature, Music and Photography. Focusing on this year’s theme of “Appreciating Imperfection” the judging was fierce to choose the top contenders in each category. The first-place winners of each category will now move onto the Orange County Council of PTA’s division where they will compete against the other Orange Unified Schools. Winners at this level will move onto the Fourth District PTA level and then onto the State PTA level. We wish our finalist the best of luck!!

LCAP SURVEY
It is that time of year again where we need the input of our stakeholders. This includes parents, students and staff. We need as many people as possible to take a moment and complete the LCAP survey for the 2024-25 school year. This is an anonymous survey that provides valuable input to both our school and district. To take the survey please scan the QR code to the right.
PERFORMING ARTS
DRAMA PERFORMS "CLUE"
Over four nights the week before Thanksgiving Vacation, the CHS Drama Department performed the play "Clue". The play is adapted from the 1985 film which was based on the board game Clue. Skye Mason was the star of the show taking on the role as Wadsworth, the Butler. When it came time to reveal who the murder (or murders) were, Skye Mason did several amazing voice impersonations of the various characters. It was an outstanding show and hopefully you had the opportunity to see it.
Here is a list of the outstanding Cast:
- Skye Mason - Wadsworth
- Alexis Reighter - Yvette
- Chloe Brinley - Miss Scarlet
- Athens Wang - Mrs. Peacock
- Shaylee Geary - Mrs. White
- Eli Medlin - Colonel Mustard
- Jacob Gallardo - Professor Plum
- Kiley Beaver - Mr. Green
- Jackson Lawrence - FBI Agent
- Angelina Hayden - Cook / Cop
- Stevie Cole - Motorist
- Mia Dali - Singing Telegram Girl
In addition to these talented actors, many other students also helped produce this play from behind the scenes.
ATHLETICS UPDATE
Canyon athletics has finished up the fall sports season and as usual, Canyon High School had a great fall in Athletics. We had two league champions and almost all of our teams participated in CIF. We are now onto the Winter Sports season where once again, it looks like we will have some very good teams to watch. Most are just getting started with their seasons so look for a more detailed update in the January newsletter. The big event in November was our Athletic signing day.
ATHLETIC SIGNING DAY
On Wednesday, November 13th, four Canyon Seniors signed their Letters of Intent to play their sport at the next level. All four of these students are not only talented athletes who are receiving scholarships for their athletic ability, but are also outstanding students. CONGRATULATIONS TO:
Brandon Benjamin - Basketball - University of San Diego
Bella Settembro - Softball - University of California San Diego
Irma Urincho - Softball - Brigham Young University
CROSS COUNTRY
Our Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams were the last fall sports teams to conclude their season. The boys team ended their season at the CIF prelims after finishing 3rd in the League Finals. The girls season concluded at the CIF Finals on Saturday, November 23rd. The team finished in 11th place led by Allison Yim who finished 29th overall.

ACADEMICS
INTERIOR DESIGN AND DRAWING CLASSES
As we continue meeting the various needs of our diverse student population, Canyon High School is offering two new Art classes this year. Students can unleash their creativity in either the Drawing or Interior Design class.
Drawing is a great class for both beginners and budding artists. This course focuses on foundation techniques like shading, perspective, and composition, all while allowing students to develop their unique artistic voice. Students will explore various mediums such as pencil, charcoal, and ink to bring your ideas to life.
Interior Design is a hands-on course designed for students eager to explore the world of interior design from concept development to space planning and color theory. Students gain practical skills in real time drawing and design, project management, and sustainable design. Students will gain insights into potential careers in interior design, architecture, real estate, and a multitude of creative industries.
Both classes are available because of the Prop 28 Art Funding and are being taught by Sandy Manich.
EMPLOYEES OF THE MONTH
TEACHER OF THE MONTH
Mrs. Nicole Garcia was recognized by students as the November Teacher of the Month. Mrs. Garcia has taught English at Canyon for several years and has made a great impact on the lives of many current and former CHS students. One of the students who nominated her said "Mrs. Garcia is committed to her students. She demonstrates care and dedication to helping her students learn."
Mrs. Garcia is a great teacher and this honor is well deserved! Congratulations!
CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
When people visit our campus they usually comment about how clean it is. This is because of our outstanding custodial staff that work very hard to take care of it. This month, one of our daytime custodians, Angel Dominguez was recognized as the November Classified Employee of the Month. Angel has been at Canyon for two years and as one teacher commented, "He is always willing to help with whatever we need right away.". Congratulations Angel and thank you to all of our day and nighttime custodians who do such a great job of taking care of our campus!
