LIBRARY ORIENTATION FOR NEW AND RETURNING STUDENTS
While we've made changes to how we communicate with you, it's essential to remember that our library still has rules and regulations in place. No matter how we approach it, sharing our library space requires certain guidelines. Since we all share similar interests, it's crucial to keep these rules in mind, especially as we begin the school year.
Take a look at our library survival kit. It should provide you with the tools you need to excel in this exciting new adventure!
DESTINY FOLLET LIBRARY CATALOG. What is it ? How do I use it?
Think of Destiny Follett Catalog as the library's special tool for keeping track of all the books and stuff they have. It's like a magical search engine for the library. You can use it to find books you want to read. Just type in a book title or author's name, and it shows you where to find it in the library.
So, if you're looking for a specific book, use Destiny Follett to locate it on the library shelves. It helps you borrow books and return them on time. It's like your library helper to make finding and borrowing books super easy!" Click on the image to know more.
SORA (a digital reading app)
Sora is like a magical library on your computer or tablet. It's a place where you can find lots of books to read, just like the books you have in your school library. But here's the cool part: these books are digital, which means you can read them on a screen!
How to Use Sora:
Log In: Your teacher or librarian will give you a special code or a link to Sora. Use it to log in. You might need your school email and password.
Browse and Borrow: Once you're in Sora, you can explore different books. Think of it like flipping through a bookshelf in the library. When you find a book you want to read, click 'Borrow.' It's just like checking out a book from the school library.
Read Anywhere: You can read the books right on your computer, tablet, or phone. No need to go to the library! You can even read them offline when you don't have internet.
Customize: Sora lets you make the reading experience yours. You can change the text size, make it read out loud to you, and take notes if you want to remember something cool from the book.
Return: When you're done with a book, you can 'return' it. It's like putting the book back on the library shelf, but in Sora, the book becomes available for someone else to borrow.
Find New Books: Sora can also recommend books based on what you like. It's like having a personal book helper!
So, Sora is your digital library where you can read awesome books and discover new adventures. It's super easy to use, and you can enjoy reading anytime, anywhere!"
RESEARCH AND DATA BASES (Gale)
Research and databases are important in middle school because they help us:
Learn More: They let us explore topics in-depth and understand things better than just reading from a textbook.
Get Ready for High School: They teach us skills we'll need for tougher assignments and projects in high school.
Think Better: Research makes us think hard, decide what's trustworthy, and solve problems.
Use Technology: They help us get good with computers and the internet, which is super useful in school and life.
Be Honest: We learn to give credit to others for their work, which is fair and stops us from copying.
See Different Views: Research shows us lots of different opinions on things, so we learn to think open-mindedly.
Research Process: We also learn a step-by-step process for finding information. It's like following a recipe for cooking. We learn to ask questions, search for answers, and put it all together to create our own projects and reports.
So, research and databases make us smarter, better thinkers, and ready for the future! They also teach us how to find and use information the right way.
GALE RESOURCES AND DATA BASES (access)
Imagine you have a big collection of trading cards, each with different information about animals, superheroes, or your favorite hobbies. Now, think of a database as a super organized card catalog for all that information. It helps you find the card you want quickly and easily.
Now, let's talk about Gale resources. Imagine you have a magical library that holds tons of special books and articles about all kinds of topics. Gale is like that magical library, but it's on the internet.
BRITANICA (access)
- Britannica Online is like a virtual treasure chest of knowledge made for education. It's a website filled with articles, videos, images, and more about all sorts of interesting stuff – history, science, animals, famous people, and even homework help. What's great is that everything you find there is carefully researched by experts, so you know it's reliable for school projects and learning adventures. It's like having a friendly guide to help you explore and discover new things right on your computer or tablet. Britannica Online is your ticket to a world of fascinating facts and information!"

WORK, FUN AND LUNCH IN THE LIBRARY
We have some exciting news for you about our school library. You may remember our lunch plan from last year, but there have been some changes. To ensure that everyone has a chance to enjoy the library during lunchtime, I will personally manage lunch passes. If you want to spend your lunch break in the library, please come to me for all the details before trying to actually come in during lunch time. Hallway teachers will require a pass to let you in. Remember, you'll need a lunch pass to enter. You can come and see me before and after school to talk about it.
But wait, there's more! We have some fantastic activities and opportunities in store for you:
Group Lunches and Clubs: Teachers can also organize lunch groups and notify me they are coming. Talk to your teacher and ask him/her to organize a lunch group for a special occasion. I will handle the passes to you once I have received your teacher's request. Lunch group will not start until October.
Games, Films, and Fun: Starting this October, we have some exciting plans:
Tuesdays: Get ready for enjoyable games like Kahoot, Jeopardy, and puzzles.
Thursdays: We'll have special short film lunches. If you have any suggestions for cool short films, please share them with us.
Volunteering: We are also looking for student volunteers. You can fill out this form and request a chance to volunteer in our library. We encourage you to complete the form and even share it with your parents. Some of you might want to take on small tasks in the library, even if it's just for a few minutes when you finish your work or during special occasions. We also welcome parents who want to help with shelving and processing books

Laura's Choice, a book recommendation by your school librarian 🙋
Dear Middle School Students,
I recommend "When you reach me " by Rebecca Stead for middle schoolers. The book makes it clear that racism is not OK, and shows kids that it's never a good idea to make assumptions about anyone, regardless of their circumstances.Miranda and her mom are imperfect characters, but they have a close, loving relationship. Miranda realizes that even though Julia has money, that doesn't mean she has a better life or gets more attention from her parents.
Why should you read it?
Positive Role Models
Miranda is mostly a positive role model, even though she isn't perfect. As a latchkey kid who is home alone after school, she's responsible for taking care of herself. She befriends an unpopular girl and is best friends with a boy, without any dating connotations. On the negative side, she's sometimes snotty to her mother. One day she goes to her friend's house without telling her mom, making her mother cry from worry. She also watches a fair amount of television.
There is more information coming up soon. Stay tunned!
I'm currently working on the new library website, ensuring its content and design align with those of our other school libraries. Through this platform, you'll have access to Gale services and the library guides we've already created.
Additional information will be forthcoming. Details regarding clubs and lunch procedures will be shared in the following editions of this students newsletter.
Thank you for reading us!
