This newsletter provides LISD families with information and resources to support their gifted learners.

Sparking Curiosity and Delight -- When children show strong abilities in one academic area or another, the adults in their lives often encourage them to pursue hobbies and careers that play off those strengths. That may certainly be an advantage, but sometimes the strategy can leave children feeling incomplete. In this webinar, explore a path that supports academic growth while sparking curiosity in childhood. Learn how to come alongside your kids as they dive deeply into the passions and interests that make them come alive! This webinar also had a live Spanish interpretation during the event.

Description: Parenting is hard but parenting a twice-exceptional student can feel like you are constantly fighting for what your child needs in a land of people that just don't understand. In this session, Dr. Ashley Y. Carpenter teaches you about both the lands of gifted/talented education and special education. Learn the terminology, what to ask for, and who to talk to on your advocacy journey. She is the parent of a twice exceptional child, a former special education teacher, gifted teacher, and is now an Assistant Professor of Gifted Education.

Did you know that students in grades 8-11 who have taken the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or PSAT 8/9 can view their online report for information about AP courses they are likely to do well in? Students can view Advanced Placement (AP) course recommendations by logging into College Board.

*Please note that the AP Potential list will include all College Board AP courses, some of which may not be offered on LISD campuses.

Soon students will be choosing courses for the 2023-2024 school year. G/T students are encouraged to consider courses that provide appropriate challenge and/or that align with their personal interests or passions. Our middle and high schools offer a variety of G/T, Honors, and AP courses to meet our gifted students' needs.

All G/T students are required to take at least one advanced course in order to retain their G/T status. Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and Level 3 or 4 CTE courses count as advanced coursework.
