Welcome to our 7th week of school!
It's time! It is Tour de Ladd day today!
When I first started at Abernethy the idea of putting a bunch of kids on bikes and sending them around the neighborhood scared me! My thoughts were filled with skinned knees and elbows. However, watching it year after year that is not the case! I see so many smiles, excitement from the students and our community come out and together to cheer as our students ride around the neighborhood. It is a heartwarming community event that really defines Abernethy. Thank you to all who have put in time to make this event happen. Thank you Travis Young for taking it on and I will thank you in advance for taking it on again next year too!
Abernethy Report Card
I am sure that you all saw the district announcement last week that the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) released all school report cards. These school report cards are based on our 3rd through 5th grade state test scores. This is only one snapshot, and not the whole picture of how we are doing as a school, but it is a way to see how we are doing compared to other schools in the state of oregon, and it is a way for us to measure our own growth.
I am happy with many elements of our report card as we had growth in many areas. Reflecting on what theis report card tells us, I know that we have areas where we can improve and areas that we want to continue our growth. However, the main part that you all will see is a result of all the hard work and dedication from our teachers, in a year that had some "bumps", as well as our strong partnership with our families and community to support all our students.
We had a 3% growth in our reading scores.
We went from 78% meeting or exceeding (level 3 or 4) on the reading OSAS to 81%
We had a 2% growth in our math scores.
We went from 78% meeting or exceeding (level 3 or 4) on the math OSAS to 80%
We also had an 11% growth in our 5th grade Sciece scores.
We went from 67% meeting or exceeding (level 3 or 4) on the 5th grade Science OSAS to 78%
Field Trips
We are still waiting on 5th and 3rd grade
We love to build on our curriculum with outside of school connections and field trips. We feel that this brings a lot to what your students are learning. Each teacher has planned out their field trips for the year, roughly when the dates are as well as how much it will cost per student. In order to smooth our process out, we are asking for a one time payment.
Below you will see links to each teacher's School Pay account where you can make the one time field trip payment for your student. Just click on the grade level icon above your student's teacher's name.

Announcements from the Abernethy Office
Opt out of PAPERLESS, or stay PAPERLESS
Another new change for PPS is the automatic OPT IN for paperless report cards.
We want to make sure that all familes know and understand that unless you go into ParentVue and UNCHECK the box to only receive your student's report card on-line, you will NOT receive a paper report card for your student. We are not trying to sway families into either decision, paper or paperless, we just want to make sure all familes are aware of this new change.
If you have any questions please call the office. We are happy to explain anything and help walk you through the needed steps to do what ever it is you want to receive.
Abernethy RETAKE School Picture Day!
If you missed picture day, or feel that you need to retake your school picture, our picture retake day will be October 17th.
The first round of photos will be shared prior to this October 17th date.
Last-Minute Instructions for Your Students
If you have last-minute instructions or messages for your student, please call the office at (503) 916-6190. Do not email the office, as emails may be missed when staff are out. Calling ensures that your message reaches your student promptly. The office will ensure that your student gets a "yellow" note with their end of day change of plans. All notes get passed out to students at 2:00pm. Please try not to call th eoffice after 2:00pm with change of plans unless it is an emergency.
Thank you for your cooperation!
Interested in Volunteering? Please Complete Your Background Check!
With school in full swing, field trips starting, and Tour de Ladd on the horizon, there are plenty of ways to get involved! Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about Abernethy, build community, and enhance your student’s school experience.
Please note that all volunteers are required to complete a PPS background check. If you’re interested in volunteering, please complete the PPS Volunteer Background Check. Background checks are quick and easy, and they’re valid for three years!
Please do not wait until it is too late. Currently background checks are taking 3 - 4 weeks. If you are unsure if your's has expired, please call the office and we can check for you.
International Walk + Roll to School Day Is Today!
Join us today in celebrating International Walk + Roll to School Day, a global event that encourages communities in over 40 countries to walk and roll to school! Since its inception in 1997, this initiative has grown into a movement promoting safe routes to school year-round.
This year, the event takes place the same day as Tour de Ladd, and we encourage our school community to walk and roll not only that day, but throughout the entire month to foster healthy habits that last all year.
Let’s get moving and make a positive impact together! Stop by the gazebo before and after school to pick up Walk + Roll stickers, reflective shoelaces, pencils, comics, bookmarks, activity sheets, and coloring books!
Tour de Ladd
🚴♀️ Tour de Ladd is finally here! 🚴♂️
Wednesday, October 9th
Join us on Wednesday, October 9 for our annual student bike-a-thon benefitting the Abernethy PTA! Our students will strap on their helmets and ride through a car-free street course, spreading joy and excitement. There will be six waves of riders, each lasting 10-20 minutes based on grade level. Students who choose not to participate will enjoy time with teachers and families in the cheering section.
Here’s what you need to do (quickly, please!) since we’re just about a week away:
Sign up for pledges!
Every student should now have a fundraising page on the 99 Pledges donation site. Contributions will support vital programs, including books for teachers, school supplies, and Reading Results. Last year, we raised an incredible $27,858 for Abernethy! Let’s make this year’s Tour de Ladd an even bigger success!
Complete the waiver!
Make sure to fill out the waiver form for your child to participate. It’s super easy this year!
Volunteer!
We’re looking for about 50 volunteers to help out!. We have roles for everyone, from setting up the famous balloon arch to monitoring bikes in the covered basketball courts to serving as course marshals. Signing up for multiple shifts is encouraged and greatly appreciated.
Stay tuned for more info, including a full schedule coming soon!
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out at: tourdeladd@supportabernethy.org
Let’s make this a fantastic event!

September Equality and Diversity Calendar
September marks National Hispanic Heritage Month celebrated from September 15 to October 15. It honors all Latino and Hispanic Americans and their contributions to American culture. The anniversaries of many Latin American countries are held on or around September 15 hence why the start of the month starts mid-month. Take time to acknowledge how these communities impact society and foster understanding of their unique heritages.
It also is National Recovery Month which hopes to educate all Americans on the treatment services for those struggling with substance use disorders.
September 4 – Richard Wright’s Birthday
The popular Black American writer wrote some of the most powerful 20th-century novels which exposed the realities of racism in the Deep South where he was born in 1908.
September 11 – Patriot Day
On the morning of September 11, 2001, the worst terrorist attack in American history occurred when four commercial airliners were hijacked by al-Qaeda members. Two crashed into the twin towers of the World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon, and another into a field in Pennsylvania.
September 20 – HeForShe
This solidarity movement was first created by the UN to help promote gender equality worldwide.
September 21 – International Day of Peace
This UN day encourages all nations to observe a ceasefire. Each year the UN bell is rung in New York City to inaugurate this nonviolence day.
IInternational Day of Sign Languages – September 23
The International Day of Sign Languages celebrates sign languages as a vital part of linguistic and cultural diversity. This day highlights the importance of sign language in the full realization of the human rights of people who are deaf. It promotes the preservation of sign language and advocates for the rights of deaf people worldwide to have access to education and information in their native sign languages.
Celebrate Bisexuality Day – September 23
Bisexuality Visibility Day is committed to celebrating the bisexual community and its history and achievements. Raise awareness about bisexuality and speak up about misconceptions about the community in the workplace and beyond.
October's Learner Profile is COMMUNICATOR
We express ourselves confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. We collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.
We share our ideas with confidence. We speak more than one language. We listen to others when they are sharing ideas.
Questions you can ask your students:
How Can We Understand One Another?
Why Do We Share Our Ideas?
What are the ways in which we communicate?
