MMS Weekly Update
January 12, 2024
This Week's Highlight:
Before break Mrs. Wilson's science students explored one of water's unique characteristics. This unique characteristic is why water droplets bead when dropped on a waxy surface and why some insects can walk on water. These observations can be attributed to the high surface tension of water.
In Mr.Costa's science class students are learning about ocean currents. Students read a really exciting book called "Ducks in the flow...where did they go?", which explains how in 1992, 29,000 rubber ducks were accidentally spilled into the Pacific ocean. The ducks ended up all over the world and helped scientists better understand ocean currents.
Schedules for second semester
Some students schedules will change for second semester. Please check Skyward on Friday, January 26 for an updated second semester schedule. Locker and bus assignments stay the same all year.
NAEP
Millennium will be participating in the National Assessment of Educational Progress in early February. NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. Approximately 50 random students have been selected to participate. Parents/Guardians of these 50 students will be contacted with more detailed information.
Popcorn Day Volunteers
MMS PTO is looking for volunteers to help during Popcorn Fridays. Volunteers will help with popping corn before lunch, selling during lunch and clean up. Thank you!
Note: Please ensure you have completed the Online Volunteer Background Check Authorization form through the SLCS website.
REPEATS AND REMINDERS
Non-Homestead Operating Millage Renewal & Restoration Election 2024
On Tuesday, February 27, 2024, South Lyon Community School district voters will be asked whether to approve the non-homestead operating millage. The Non-homestead operating millage is the school district’s operating millage and has a direct impact on the per pupil foundation allowance that the district receives from the State of Michigan.
If approved, the non-homestead operating millage would result in no increase in taxes to primary homestead homeowners.
The operating millage would be for a period of 10 years, 2025-2034.
This renewal, if approved, would keep the existing 18 mills tax levy on businesses, rental properties and second homes.
This renewal, if approved, would maintain an estimated $15 million for the general operations of the school district in 2025.
If the operating millage renewal fails and is not available to levy in 2025, every operation of the school district would be closely analyzed in order to cut from the future budget to account for the loss in revenue.
More information is available on the SLCS website at www.slcs.us so voters can make an informed decision about this millage proposal.
Please email requestinfo@slcs.us if you have any questions.
