2023 - 2024 WINTER SEASON RECAP
The Framingham High School Athletic Department is proud to look back at the 2023-2024 winter season, noting numerous individual and team accomplishments. Here is a look at some of our featured Flyer moments:
For the second time in the history of our Alpine Skiing program, FHS sent one of our skiers to States. Sophomore Andrew Parnell punched his ticket by finishing 6th overall with his brother, Freshman Nick Parnell, attending as the first alternate. On the girls side, Senior Madison Rieder’s leadership pushed the program to a new level of success.
Boys Basketball faced some adversity early in the year, however Coach Pat Ferdinand noted that he was “incredibly proud of the level of resilience that this group of players showed as the season went on - players developed, sacrificed, shared the ball, and connected.” The program honored Anthony Morretti, Tyler Hayes, Liam Pederson, Sean Plisner, and Tyler King on senior night with an emotional victory over Wellesley High - a team that had defeated the Flyers by 30 points earlier in the season. A true underdog story to send off their seniors.
The Girls Basketball program finished the regular season ranked 11th in the state. The girls battled through the first round of the MIAA tournament making it to the Sweet Sixteen, where they suffered an unfortunate loss to Central Catholic in a neck and neck battle. Three Flyers ball players were named Bay State All-Stars for the 2023 - 2024 season: Senior Caroline Galvani, Junior Allison Regan, and Sophomore Grace Hanna. Allie Regan was also recognized as a Boston Globe Player of the Week.
The Boys Swim & Dive program was faced with a tough season as their roster was short in comparison to many of their competitors. With that said, two of our ten swimmers were undefeated in league play. Five of our student-athletes hit Sectional and State qualifying marks. The Flyers came in 4th at the League Meet, 9th at Sectionals, and 8th at States. Four members of the Boys Swim and Dive program were named Bay State All-Stars: Juniors Brandon Liu, Ethan Lu, Sam Shi, Josh Peace and Sophomore Ben Crocker. Junior Nick Swan received Honorable Mention.
The FHS Dance team had a busy and successful season, getting involved in a number of community events such as the AFSP’s Walk for Suicide Prevention, Devin’s Dash, and running after school dance clubs at our local middle schools. Spending the winter season performing at the FHS girls basketball games and dancing in multiple competitions, they pushed through some early season setbacks tallying numerous major team accomplishments. The dance team placed in the Top 3 in the DTU Regional Invitational and earned the title of HipHop State Champions at the MSAA State Tournament, berthing them a trip to the New England Regional Tournament, taking place on March 9th.
Gymnastics noted two individuals with fantastic accomplishments on the year. Junior Olivia Lane broke two records on the season, including one of her own. She now holds the FHS records for Beam with a high of 9.75 and All-Around with a record of 38.1. Senior Maggie Spring qualified for the State Individual meet and was chosen to compete on the Senior National Team - Team Massachusetts, to be held in Fort Myers this May.
Seniors Noah Albright, Robby White, and Jeremy Auren led the Boys Ice Hockey team to a playoff berth this season. Coach Dan Riva noted exceptional season and tournament play by Senior goaltenders, Colin McKinney and Robert Geltman. The Flyers took home the Cahoon Cup with a 1-0 victory over Burlington High School with Noah Albright being named MVP of the Tournament. Albright was also honored as a Bay State All-Star, along with Robby White receiving Honorable Mention.
The boys weren’t the only Ice Hockey program with BSC accolades. On the girls side, Seniors Mackenzie Coleman and Carolyn Cotta were named Bay State All-Stars. Freshman goaltender Echo Yale tallied 735 saves and recorded three shutouts on the season, earning them Bay State League Honorable Mention recognition. Yale is on track to reach the 1000 save mark as a sophomore - an accomplishment many don’t reach until senior year, if at all.
Indoor Track and Field saw tremendous success this season, including an unbelievable run from Senior Abby Desmarais, who brought home the Division 1 State Championship title in the 55m and the 300m. Deamarais was also the BSC Champ in the 300m. Senior Emily Richardson earned herself a State Title in the Shot Put, as well as a BSC Championship. Sophomore Sasha Lamakina, took home the 600m Championship in both the D1 State Meet, as well as the BSC Meet. Sophomore Ava Lombardo finished 3rd at the BSC Meet. Two relay teams performed incredibly for the Flyers: Abby Desmarais, Sasha Lamakina, Ava Lombardo, and Ella Terranova took home 2nd in the 4x400m at the State Championship, while Desmarais, Lamakina, Lombardo, and Caitelyn Last finished 2nd in the 4x200m at the BSC Meet.
The boys team had three top-6 finishers at the BSC Meet: Sophomore Vini Silva placed 6th in the 55m Hurdles, and Seniors Matt Vilela and Calvin Hodge finished 4th and 6th in the Shot Put, respectively. Additionally, Vini Silva, Matt Silva, Joash Ssejjemba-Ssonko and Jack Donato placed 6th in the 4x200 relay.
The Flyers have seven athletes competing in Nationals this weekend: Catelyn Last, Sasha Lamakina, Ava Lombardo, Evelyn Poku, Abby Desmarais, Ella Terranova, and Emily Richardson.
Last but not least, our Framingham High School Wrestling team had an incredible season. Seven student-athletes qualified for States this season, including Junior Dan Sullivan who placed 5th, along with Junior Kizen Semprum, Senior Ben Lincoln and Freshman Philip Watson all taking 8th. In addition, Freshman Penelope Trostel placed 3rd in the Division 1 Girls State Tournament. One of the school's most notable athletes of the season was Adriana DeGroat. DeGroat is the first female wrestler in FHS history to be crowned both the Division 1 Girls State Champion and Girls All-State Champion. She placed 5th in New England as a freshman and has a bright future ahead of her.
Congratulations to all of our winter student-athletes on a remarkable season!
