Hawk Freshmen Success
September 2024
Jeff Villarreal - AP of Freshman Success
Dear Hawk Students and Families,
I want to thank all our freshman students for the strong start to the school year. My name is Jeff Villarreal, Assistant Principal of Freshman Success at BHS. I will be a resource for you and your students as they embark on their new journey in the educational career. This is my 20th year in education and 1st in this role, however, I am excited to be providing the support your students need to have a successful first year! My theme for the Class of 2028, was to "Discover their Passion" by embracing the wide range of opportunities that Bartlett has to offer. If I can assist in any way, please email me at jeffreyvillarreal@u-46.org.
Sincerely,
Mr. Villarreal
What does Freshman "on track" mean?
Freshmen "on track" by definition are those that earn at least 10 credits by the end of the first year of HS and have failed no more than one semester in a core class (Math, Science, English, Social Science)Each semester class they complete and pass is one full credit.
Why is it important?
Studies show that being on track as a 9th grader is a BETTER indicator of HS success than race, income, neighborhood, and prior test scores combined. These students are 3 1/2 times more likely to graduate within four years than those "off track".
What can FAMILIES do to help?
Please engage in conversations about your child's education. Ask them about details regarding homework, teachers, their favorite and least favorite classes, what their grades show on Infinite Campus, and/or if they need help outside of class. Infinite Campus is the district's "grading hub". Students' summative, formative & intentional practice grades are located there. Parents can log into Infinite Campus here.
Additionally, it is important to utilize canvas. Canvas is the district's learning management system and provides students with a one stop shop for the instructional materials that are needed for each class. Parents can be observers in each course. Here's how.
Getting Involved - Clubs, Sports, Activities/Events
Bartlett High School has 32 sports and over 90 clubs and activities for students to participate in. Our goal is to create an environment where everyone has a sense of belonging and can explore their interests! Please have your student check out our LIST OF CLUBS or ATHLETIC WEBSITE for more information.

Attendance - Every Minute Matters
Being present and engaged in school can make or break your success in high school. Showing up can be half the battle! Once you're here, how you engage in your classes will determine how successful you become. Click HERE for more information regarding U-46's attendance campaign.
Budget your time
Figure out how much time you usually spend on your activities and then create a weekly schedule to follow. Determine how much free time you have before you add any commitments. And don't forget to schedule time to relax.
Make a to-do list every day
Put the most important tasks at the top, even if they're things you're dreading, and tackle them first. Include things you want to do on your list too, so you have items you're looking forward to. Try motivating yourself with a reward if you get to everything on your list.
Keep your work with you
That way, if you find yourself with extra time—while on the train or bus or waiting for an appointment—you can get something done.
Don't be afraid to say no
It's OK to say no if your friend asks you to go to a movie one night but you have a test the next morning. instead, find a time that works for both of you and go see the movie then.
Find your productive time
Are you a morning person or a night person? You'll be more efficient if you work when you're at your best.
Get a good night's sleep
Your brain needs rest to perform at its peak. If it's time to sleep, list the things you still need to get done on the next day's to-do list and go to bed.
BE PROACTIVE, NOT REACTIVE! Advocate for YOURSELF!
