ELA 7

Last week,(1/13-1/17) students engaged in middle of the year MAP testing in ELA. This is a test that analyzes students' ability to read literary texts, nonfiction texts, and a range of vocabulary. They will take the test again at the end of the year, and their scores will be a discussion with students during advisory and at future parent-teacher conferences. We expect all students to try their best on these tests, and see it as an opportunity to practice the testing and focus skills they will need for DC CAPE in the Spring.
Next week,(1/13-1/17) students will be doing a MAP Data Reflection on Tuesday; Wednesday will be for WDC Socratic Seminar Prep; Thursday will be a WDC Socratic Seminar (grade goes on Advisory 3); Friday will be a fun review of the novel. Animal Farm is next! ISBN # 978-0451526342. Students will need books by FEBRUARY 20.
Parkmont Poetry Contest!
Submit to Our District-wide Poetry Celebration by February 21, 2025
The world needs some poetry right now. And we would love to include your students’ work among our entries for the 43rd annual Parkmont Poetry Festival. Since 1982, our event has gathered young poets and their communities for a celebration that connects all the wards of the District for a day of poetry. We select 20 middle-school winners and 20 upper-school winners, and we publish their poems in an anthology. Each of the 40 winning poets receives a $50 gift card and a commemorative tee-shirt. On Saturday, May 3rd at 2 pm, we host a reading of the poems and a reception for the poets and their families, friends, and teachers. The raising of their collective voices is one of the most joyous events of the spring!
The deadline for submissions is approaching. Entries are due by Friday, February 21st. Any student who attends a DC public, private, or charter school, or who is home-schooled in the District, may submit up to two poems. Entry is easy on our website: parkmontpoetry.org. You may also send submissions to poetry@parkmont.org, accompanied by the entry form from the website. For questions or help with any part of the process, please reach out to Kim Schraf at poetry@parkmont.org!
I hope you’ll help us honor the diverse gifts of our young writers. Theirs are the voices of our future!
The 2024 winning poets gather after the reading at Zion Baptist Church last year.

Next week, we will be having class Socratic Seminars (organized discussions). Students have already prepared questions they will be asking to discuss the book, Warriors Don't Cry. Speaking in front of peers can often be intimidating to our English Language Learners, so we encourage students to practice asking their questions at home or people they trust beforehand. Ask them to share their questions with you for practice!
Ms. Harris (ELA Periods 1 & 7)
This week, in ELA, we finished term 2 and our full class novel, The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm. Our new unit starts next week, and we are starting a new book titled Warriors Don't Cry. I would recommend that if you are able to purchase a copy of this book for your student to do so, as being able to access the text at home (they will also have it available on Canvas) can help them stay up-to-date on their assignments in ELA. This is a memoir about the Little Rock Nine; if you are unfamiliar with this time in American history, I would encourage looking up information about it using the link below and discussing it with your student at home to help them gain additional background knowledge on the subject.

Mr. Hairston (Music 7)
My name is Mr. Hairston, the Vocal Music Teacher at Alice Deal. If you have any questions, please free to contact me at: antuan.hairston@k12.dc.gov
Greetings Team Acoma Parents,
I hope you are well. We are coming to an end of Team Acoma's first semester with music. Teaching your students has been an amazing experience over the last few months. Together we have worked towards developing and finding our artistic voice, researched the ethnomusicology of Washington, D.C., and have learned the ins-and-outs of DC's Cultural Music: Go-Go. Our class will end with a culminating performance event titled "Dealchella" next week (1/13 - 1/16). Thank you so much for a great semester!
Mr. Hairston
If you are interested in attending, the Jinfan Performance Troupe will give a performance highlighting the rich legacy of Chinese Culture on Friday, Jan. 17th, beginning tentatively at 1pm. What's going on in January?
Library overdue emails were sent out in December and I have heard from several families about books overdue that are owed to different schools. Please disregard titles owed to other sites. At the end of the year, I will send another notice email. Notices will only include Deal items moving forward. Sorry about any confusion!
