Thank you to everyone who was able to make sure that students braved the rain to get to school today! It was good to see those who were here from the start and then those who came once the weather calmed down. Attendance is integral to achievement and success so we do need to make every effort to have students on site.

Benchmark Week

The benchmark exams went well and teachers have been busy completing marking and awarding grades. Those students who worked hard will feel satisfaction at the results of their efforts. Where a student is disappointed with a result they now have time to remedy the problem over the next three weeks and will be well supported by teachers to help to lift their achievement.

For students who did not have exams, it was good to see those who continued their studies and focused on course completion. It is vital that students stay the course at this stage in the year and complete their certification at NCEA Level 1, 2 or 3. Please make it a priority to ensure your student is at school and completing the course work in order to succeed. If you are struggling to get your young adult to school, contact their whanau teacher or Dean – together we can help ensure their success.

Subject Selection

Senior students and year ten students are beginning the process of choosing their subjects for 2022. The Careers Team in the Careers Hub can be really helpful with this decision-making process and are always available to see students. They are also available for interviews with whanau if you want to make a booking. Choosing a pathway is one of the most important decisions that our young people make at school; supporting them through this process is vital. It is also important to note that completing your courses this year gives you more options for next year’s courses.

Covid-19 Vaccination Information

As you know we have been instructed as a school to gather information for each of our enrolled students on their vaccination status for Covid-19. This information would be used by the Ministry of Health in the event of a community outbreak to determine whether and how the school could function if there was Covid in our community. Senior Prize-Giving

The Senior Management Team is working through the process of how to run Senior Prize-Giving for our senior students to recognize their mahi and success in 2021. We are of course, keen to ensure that any event that we hold complies with the health and safety requirements under Alert Level 2 for Covid-19.

At this stage we plan to hold two events. A Prize Giving for Year 11 students on Wednesday 17th November in the afternoon, to which students could bring two designated whanau members, followed by a Year 12 and 13 Prize-Giving on Thursday 18th November in the morning. The Year 12 Prize Winners only would be invited, accompanied by two designated whanau members. All Year 13 students and their two designated whanau guests would be invited. This is the only way that we can see of celebrating with whanau and students and maintaining the safety requirements around spacing. We would be optimistic that next year our current Year 12s would be able to celebrate their final year at Trident with whanau.

Whilst this is not ideal for everyone, it seems to be a way to still celebrate as a community and this is important to us as a school. More information will follow as we iron out the details.

Attendance

Please make it a priority for your young adult to be at school every day. This is the only way that we can work with you to maintain opportunities for their success. Your whanau ako teacher, Dean or a member of SMLT is always available to help you if there are problems with this key area of school life.

Current Year 10 to Year 12 students and whanau are invited to an NCEA information evening on Tuesday 4th November. This is an opportunity to learn about NCEA and meet subject specialist teachers, discuss Career Pathways, Futures Academy and Service Academy.

Due to Level 2 Covid management we ask that whanau arrive at specific times:

5.30pm - 6.15pm - Introduction to NCEA for our current year 10 students moving into year 11. NCEA information session and then a chance to meet subject specialist teachers to discuss option.

6.00pm - 6.45pm Current year 11 and 12 students and whanau are invited to discuss specific subjects with teaching staff as well as career pathway and Futures Academy.

This is a 20 minute conversation between whanau, student and Whanau teacher about up to date NCEA results and next steps, and pastoral mentoring. This is also the final step in subject selection - discussion around options, subject explanations and any NCEA questions. It is important that all students and whanau meet with the Whanau teacher to discuss 2022 subjects so that students are able to access all available opportunities at Trident.

We have been working with Sharon from the Regional District Council to make sure that each student at SEC has a beecard which will allow them to access transport throughout the Bay of Plenty. Sharon organised a bus to come to school so that students could practice using their beecard. We wish to thank Sharon and the team that she assembled for taking the time to show our students how it all works. Everyone had a fantastic day. We can't wait to plan our bus trips.

We have received information from the Ministry of Education that face coverings are required to be worn by students aged 12 and over while on school transport under all alert levels. For us this means all students must be wearing a face covering on the school bus from Tuesday the 26th of October.

Providing face coverings is the responsibility of individuals and caregivers. Any student who is unwell should stay home and not travel on a school bus. If you have a mask wearing exemption please show this to the bus driver. Please contact the school if you have any queries.

This year’s GBI trip has suffered from the Alert level 3 lockdown imposed on Auckland and Mr Rowland has been in constant negotiation with the providers on the island to try to ensure that the adventure can be realised. The upshot of many weeks of changes, resetting dates and bookings, is that we are now planning to take the group to the island at the beginning of next year. This has some great advantages – the weather and the possibilities of island life in the summer months - but also some drawbacks – starting the year 11 program of NCEA out of school. As a teaching staff we will work alongside the students to ensure the disruption is minimized and that we can offer them a full and manageable NCEA course load when they return.

In addition, Mr Rowland is planning the Year 10 GBI 2022 – his commitment to this program is outstanding and the work beyond the school day involved in this, is considerable. We are so lucky to have such excellent teachers at our school.

Futures Academy for 2022

Ms Haines and Ms Wildash are currently interviewing students for the Futures Academy 2022. There are some exciting new courses including boat handling, early childhood education, game design, computer security and creative arts, as well as our regular programs, construction, automotive, agriculture, boat building, engineering, hair and beauty, IT, driving, hospitality,tourism etc. Please see Ms Wildash or Ms Haines if you are interested.

Tertiary Study for 2022

Students can see Ms Wildash in the Careers Hub for support completing applications. Students should also check out www.moneyhub.co.nz and www.studyspy.ac.nz.

Student Allowance and Loans

Year 13 students who have turned 18 may be eligible for a student allowance, please see Ms McGowan for more information. Students needing to set up their studylink accounts for 2022 should see Ms McGowan for assistance.

Students requiring first aid certificates.

Year 13 students who require first aid certificates for their tertiary studies eg: nursing, please let Ms McGowan in the Careers Hub know. We can help you to complete this course this year.

Cadetship Opportunity

WSP Whakatane has a cadetship opportunity for a school leaver interested in a career in engineering, architectural technology or surveying. OVERVIEW

Our residential camp has been designed to target personal growth and social awareness, developing skills for life without electronic devices! NO CELL PHONES. Qualities such as a sense of responsibility and a purpose in life will be nurtured. This programme will build self-confidence and self-esteem through challenging outdoor activities, team work, environmental projects and daily chores. The camp also develops self-management skills as it progresses through the 4 weekly themes of Whakarangatira (Self Management), Mahi Tahi (Team work), Manaakitanga (Kindness, Generosity, Support), Mana Motuhake (Independence and Autonomy).

ACTIVITIES

A range of outdoor pursuits ranging from Waka Ama, SUP boarding, Sea Kayaking, Kayak Surfing, Sailing, Coasteering, Fishing, Snorkelling, Tramping, Rock Climbing, Abseiling, Navigation, Camp Craft, and a High Ropes course. Environmental education and authentic outdoor projects are to be expected when resting from the outdoor pursuits listed above.

PROJECTS

Local environmental enhancement projects, tree planting, track maintenance, a day visit to a local Junior School and environmental based projects with DOC and private landowners.

FOUR EXPEDITIONS

Including one gathering kai moana, two overnight and a 4 day expedition to finish the camp.

Students will be expected to: write letters home on a weekly basis, read books, keep an extensive journal during personal reflection time, be involved with multiple environmental projects and work towards a final presentation. During their time at GBI the students will be required to work cooperatively as a team as they organise their day to day living.

Independence and life skills will be encouraged as students take responsibility for personal hygiene, meal planning, cooking, clean and tidy living quarters, washing etc. They will assist the community with maintaining and harvesting from the garden and sea, gathering kai moana to share with each other.

We congratulate Noah Camburn and Tai Murphy on their fantastic placings at the Inter-club Surf comp 4.0 in Gisborne over the weekend. In the U16 category Tai placed 2nd and Noah placed 3rd. Well done boys.

These two boys not only train to surf competitively but along with several other Trident surfers they spend their afternoons working at the beach - teaching in surf lessons for younger children and even with adults, coaching and encouraging them into the sport.

Trident is well represented at our Whakatane Surf Club at all levels, with students and staff alike joining in as athletes, life guards and coaches. Head along to the open day and see if it is something that interests you.

Trident High School has opted into the government’s Optional Donations Scheme in 2021-2022

Our school has been working with SchoolDocs to create a website for our policies and procedures. We are excited to announce that the site is now live and available to our school community.

The school works on a subscription basis with SchoolDocs to maintain, update, and review our policies. SchoolDocs provides us with a comprehensive core set of policies, which have been well researched and follow the Ministry of Education National Administration Guidelines. The policies and procedures are tailored to our school, and the school supplies specific information such as our charter, and procedures for behaviour management, reporting to parents, etc.

SchoolDocs updates, modifies, or creates policies in response to changes in legislation or Ministry guidelines, significant events, reviews/requests from schools, and regular reviewing from the SchoolDocs team. Our board of trustees has the opportunity to view changes/additions and comment on them before they are implemented. We will advise you when policies are up for review and how you can take part in the review.
