From the Desk of the Superintendent
Welcome back from the holiday break and Happy New Year.
Each year we are required, as per the Stoughton Town Charter, to file our School District budget by December 31st. We met the deadline by sending it to the Select Board and Finance Committee.
The school budget can be found here. This budget recommendation is based on student needs and outcomes.
Our demographics have significantly changed over the last three years with over 600 English Language Learners and 33 languages, an increase in enrollment for the second consecutive year (and for the next 7 years per the NESDEC Enrollment Study), an increase in social emotional behavioral needs, an increase in student chronic absenteeism (18% and climbing), and an increase in specialized education supports PreK-12+.
Moreover, Stoughton Public Schools has made a commitment to teaching ALL students, supporting families with the elimination of fees, creating pathways for learning, and having at least 90% of students reading at grade level by the end of 3rd grade, to name a few.
The current fiscal year has also seen numerous challenges including over 75 newcomer/migrant students (more to be registered in January), an increase in student behaviors at the early elementary level, the number of students requiring out-of-district placement has increased, and we are continuously dealing with transportation issues because of the lack of drivers and companies willing to provide services. As the sign in the office notes, “It Is What It Is…But it will become what you make it.”
We “make it” by constantly supporting students to the best of our ability. We “make it” by striving to do our best. We “make it” by believing that ALL children can learn, no excuses. To that end, we see the FY25 recommended budget as an opportunity to move the district forward by improving student achievement in all areas. To do so we must be mindful of the needs of our students.
Lastly, the Chapter 70 Student Opportunity Act funding from the Commonwealth has not yet been provided by the Governor. We expect to see the House 1 budget this month. At that time, I will have more to say about the recommended SPS budget.
