Willow Parent Bulletin # 17

On Monday we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In recent history, there hasn't been a more important time for us to learn from his words and example. Since most know of his I Have a Dream Speech, I'd like to share from two other works that are especially critical to our present.

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” King wrote this while in a jail cell in Birmingham, Alabama after being arrested for violating an injunction against protesting.

In his fifth and last book, Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community, King wrote, "The comfortable, entrenched, the privileged cannot continue to tremble at the prospect of change of the status quo. … This is a multiracial nation where all groups are dependent on each other. … There is no separate white path to power and fulfillment, short of social disaster, that does not share power with black aspirations for freedom and human dignity.”

Lucia M. Gonzalez’ retelling of the traditional Cuban folktale, The Bossy Gallito, is truly delightful. Written in English with Spanish words sprinkled throughout, as well as in all Spanish, this book tells the tale of a very bossy rooster who orders the characters to do his bidding. They all refuse until the ending when he finally convinces the sun to help him by saying please. What happens next?
