Orlando Science Athlete of the Week
GWEN HAYES
How are the words “Ace,” “Dig,” and “Pancake” related? They are all terms that 9th Grader Gwen is very familiar with. Gwen is a designated middle hitter on a club volleyball team. Gwen’s day does not end with the end of the school day. Up to 4 days a week, Gwen is at her volleyball club, playing volleyball. Gwen currently is interested in playing at a college. Dedication, training and persistence and marketing is needed to become a college volleyball player. In addition to practices on the court with the team and coaches, she and the rest of her 12-member team meet with a personal trainer for strength and endurance conditioning 2 days a week.
Gwen and others on her team also learn the skills of visualization, focusing, and other mental tactics to be mentally prepared for each tournament through an online course. Add an occasional private lesson to fine tune serving, hitting, blocking, and passing skills and now you are aware of the training involved for this highly competitive sport where only about 3% of the girls who play during high school are awarded a position on a college team.
In addition to the training and tournaments, Gwen and her team participate in a philanthropic project each year. The girls travel to compete in cities such as Miami, Tampa, Jacksonville and even Atlanta GA.
Club of the Week: National Math Club
“The National Math Club is a national program that gives students the opportunity to engage in mathematics that is non-competitive, fun and different from "textbook math." Created in 2007, it is a completely free MATHCOUNTS program. Students participate in mathematical hands-on activities that encourage team building and number sense. Club members are required to submit an end of the year group project to the MATHCOUNTS foundation in order to achieve Gold Level Status.”
OSS February Chess Tournament
The Orlando Science February Chess Tournament was held on Saturday February 24th 2018 and sponsored by the OSS Chess Club. Congratulations to Yusuf Gultekin for being the February winner, and to all of our participants. The next OSS Chess Tournament will be scheduled for April 7th 2018.
Orlando Science Middle High Home Visits
Dear OSS Parents and Guardians ,
We like to find ways to communicate with parents to support our mutual involvement in your child’s education. As part of OSS tradition, we are organizing home visits as a way to reach out to our families and get to know them better. We would like to set up a time for a few of your students teachers to have a brief 20-30 minute home visit. Home visits are an effective way to establish positive contact and communication with families. They are not a replacement for parent-teacher conferences, but are a process through which teachers demonstrate their support for students’ families by visiting the home environment where the family feels comfortable. Home visits originate from a sincere desire to assist and work with families. We will be glad to visit you and your child at a convenient time. If you would like to host a home visit, please select one of the days below. We will be organizing quarterly home visits. If you are not available during first quarter, you always can choose a day later on in the school year. We look forward to visiting you!
Sincerely, Orlando Science Schools Teachers and Staff
