Community Letter

Dear LISD Families,

This weekend marks a change in seasons with rain and cooler weather in the forecast. Fall conferences next week also mark an important part of the season at school. This is a time to evaluate the progress of our students and discuss as a team (parent/guardian, student, and teachers) whether to stay the course or make some changes. October is the perfect time to talk about what's working, what's not working, and next steps.

We are looking forward to next week when we have the opportunity to have healthy and meaningful conversations that ultimately benefit your student and their success in school. Conferences are a great time to come prepared with questions about your child's academics, behaviors, and social/emotional well-being. We encourage all students to attend conferences with their parent/guardians and to participate in the conversations about their learning. We are all on the same team when it comes to supporting our students!

Please remember that we will have the following school dismissal schedule:

• Elementary: Noon dismissal, Monday, 10/24, through Friday, 10/28

• Secondary: Noon dismissal, Tuesday, 10/25, Wednesday, 10/26, and Thursday, 10/27; Monday and Friday are on regular schedule.

In addition to conferences, we are excited for the LIPTSA Pumpkin Extravaganza on Thursday evening.

Kim Phillips moved back to her home state of Washington, after 20 years away, to take the position as teacher at Decatur School. She spent the past 12 years living in the foothills of the coast range near Corvallis, Oregon. This is her 10th year of teaching, and she is enjoying the challenge of teaching five lovely students in five different grades. Kim has degrees in Biology, Entomology, Teaching, and Data Analytics. She enjoys hiking with her dog Thor, reading a good book while cuddling with her cat Celia, learning the German language, attempting to grow vegetables, and trying out new recipes.

Conferences are coming up the week of October 24. For both elementary and secondary families, we are asking you to please bring your student with you to the conference. It is important that students have a voice when adults are talking about their academic progress and learning goals.

Elementary

For elementary families, the conferences will October 24-28. Students will be dismissed each day at noon. Elementary teachers will be contacting each family to let you know when your child's conference has been scheduled, along with instructions for changing the conference day/time if necessary.

Secondary

Secondary conferences will be held on Wednesday, October 26 from 1:00 to 7:00 pm and Thursday, October 27 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.

Families can now sign up for conferences in Qmlativ. Go to the school district website at lopezislandschool.org. Sign in to Qmlativ by entering your username and password. In Family Access, select the tile with the green banner titled Secondary Fall Conferences. Follow the steps to select each teacher and a time slot to build your conference schedule.

Sign up for one time slot if your student has the same teacher for two subject areas; select one subject and the teacher will cover both areas.

Bring your student with you to the conference, so that their voice can be heard in the discussion about their academic progress and learning goals. We look forward to seeing you!

Please note during the week of conferences, secondary students will be released from school early on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday at 12:00 noon.

Since secondary students are dismissed at noon on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of conference week, we won't be serving lunch in the MPR to secondary students on those days. We will, however, be happy to provide a take-away lunch on those days. Students can swing by the MPR to pick up their lunches on the way out. Please order by Monday, October 24. First grade took a trip to Lopez Hill last week. They made predictions and drew their observations in their science journals. They also looked for signs of fall and collected fallen leaves for an art project. What an enriching morning out on the trail!

Please contact Martha Martin (mmartin@lopezislandschool.org) if you can volunteer either as a lunch time supervisor or an after-school tutor. Tutoring is needed to help students one-on-one who need help with their school work (all subjects). Lunch time supervision is needed because we are understaffed and could use more friendly adult presence around the school when our secondary students who don't go off campus (so primarily middle school) have free time.

Dear Lopez Families,

The Lopez Island Family Resource Center together with LISD and community partners, such as the Lopez Library, KWIAHT, ALIGN, and Voices and Visions are planning out-of-school time programs for two age groups: K-5th graders and 6-8th graders. We are very excited to offer enriching learning activities FREE of COST to families funded by a 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) grant.

Themes: Arts and Crafts, STEM, Design, Culinary Day, Sports and Active Games, Music, Dance, Youth Leadership Opportunities, Literacy, Homework "Club" and more.

Participants will have a choice in projects and activities that best fit their interests.

The Homecoming Dance, planned by ASB, is Friday, October 28, 8:00-11:00. It was originally planned for Saturday but the high school volleyball team earned a spot in the post-season competition and they have a game that day.

The dance is free for LISD students and $10 for guests. Names of guests must be submitted ahead of time. There is a sign up sheet in the secondary office.

Only high school students may attend the homecoming dance.

Our ASB officers and representatives are planning a celebration on Tuesday, November 1 during secondary advisory. Each advisory group will create a display (altar) of photos, mementos, and other artifacts to remember loved ones (people and pets) who have passed away. Students may begin bringing in items now. Advisory teachers will collect them in preparation for November 1.

Middle school sports finished strong this week. Middle school boys basketball practice begins next week. Girls will begin practices in January, after winter break.

The high school volleyball team beat PCCS on Thursday and they are advancing to post season competition!

High school basketball starts on November 14.

- ParaEducators and ParaEducator Substitutes - Interested in working with students individually, in small groups, and/or in general classrooms and helping assist teachers in modifying student behavior? You can apply to become a ParaEducator with a regular schedule or else a ParaEducator sub for flexibility!

- Cook/ Dishwasher three days a week and Substitutes- Help make and share all the FRESH, HEALTHY, and DELICIOUS local foods with the children and staff of Lopez Island School! We are looking for some help in the fast-paced, fun and friendly kitchen at Lopez Island School.

- Bus Driver Substitutes - Lopez Island School District is accepting applications for qualified school bus drivers substitutes with potential for upcoming permanent positions. Candidates must be appropriately endorsed for CDL and Washington State School Bus driving, or be willing to complete a training class administered by Lopez Island School District (likely late October/ early November 2022).

- Special Needs Behavior Technician- If you have been thinking about being a Special Needs Behavior Technician for Lopez Island School District...well you are in luck!!!! We are looking for a Special Needs Behavior Technician to hire for this school year!! Behavior technicians are responsible for assisting behavior specialists and the Special Education department to implement behavior reduction and skill acquisition treatment plans. The candidate will assist students with day to day activities, monitor their behavior, record and collect data on students’ progress, and communicate with the team.

- Special Services Administrative Assistant- to provide assistance to the Special Services Coordinator and the District’s Special Services programs. There will be a high degree of confidentiality and attention to detail required, as this person works with parents, students, and others to serve students with special needs and those struggling with school. There will be some flexibility of schedule desired, but the position is based upon 15 hours per week throughout the calendar year.

- Van Driver - Want to get out and see the island? This transportation position drives a wheelchair van (or another vehicle) to transport student(s) with special needs to and from school. This 3.5 hour per day, Monday through Friday. This position qualifies for paid time off, retirement, and insurance benefits!

- 1.0 FTE Special Education Teacher - We are looking for a full-time Special Education teacher to help serve our students starting this school year. This is a 7.5 hours per day, Monday through Friday position qualifying for paid time off, retirement, and insurance benefits!

- .2 FTE Culinary Teacher - This is a .2 FTE secondary teaching position to work with middle and high school students as a Culinary teacher starting as soon as possible and/or January 2023. The instructor would be responsible for up to one full school year Culinary class.

- Grounds/Gardener - This position is for a Grounds person/Gardener averaging 4 hours per day, Monday – Friday. The L.I.F.E. program involves the growing and harvesting of produce and other foods in school gardens, often with the help of students, interns and volunteers, to be used in the production of school lunches.

- Stipends:

Secondary RTI provide intervention support for the purpose of improving academic and/or behavior achievement in different secondary settings.

HI CAP - providing leadership of the Special Service Program for Highly Capable (HC) students, grades K-12, in the Lopez Island School District.

Robotics - advising students grades 3-12 in an after school or weekend club. Topics and scope will be arranged with the secondary principal and will tie in to the curriculum and focus of the school.
