A Note from Principal Marvel
I shared the following story last week in a connect-ed message to our school community, but thought it worthy of sharing again. One of our school counselors told me about a student who, at the end of his junior year, had already received 27 college credits. The student's future plan is to attend UAA (University of Alaska Anchorage). More impressively, this student is on track to graduate high school this year with 45 college credits, essentially saving him and his family thousands of dollars.
The reason I wanted to share this story is that every year we have students who leave WHS to attend the Mat-Su Middle College. While an excellent choice for some, Wasilla High School provides the exact same option to receive duel college credit. MSBSD is a district of choice and we have wonderful options; however, if you are a student and/or parent who is considering attending/sending your student to MSMC because you don't believe WHS provides the same opportunities, please speak with your child’s school counselor. They will show you how AP classes can earn college credit.
As always, thank you for sharing your children with us.

WHS Tardy Policy
We hope this newsletter finds you well. We wanted to take a moment to address a recurring issue at Wasilla High School: excessive unexcused tardies.
What is an unexcused tardy? An unexcused tardy occurs when a student arrives to class late without a valid reason. If a student has a valid excuse, the tardy will be marked as excused. For our Freshman class, the norm in middle school was to mark all students that were arriving late for school as Excused. This is not the case in high school. A parent or guardian must call the school or send a note in with the student when they are late and the parent want the tardy to be excused.
How to prevent unexcused tardies:
- Ensure on-time arrival: Please make sure your student is dropped off or arrives at school on time.
- Communicate with the school: If your student is late due to circumstances beyond their control, please call the front office or send a note with the student to have them marked as excused.
Consequences for unexcused tardies:
- 1-4 tardies: Warning
- 5-6 tardies: Meeting with a school administrator
- 7 unexcused tardies: SERVE
- 8 unexcused tardies: 2 SERVE’s
- 9 unexcused tardies: 3 SERVE’s
- 10 unexcused tardies: Saturday school
Further unexcused tardies: Out-of-school suspension (at the discretion of the administration)
What is SERVE? SERVE is a program at WHS that involves "giving back to the school" through activities such as cleaning, assisting teachers, and more. It is held after school from 2:30-3:30 PM multiple times a week.
Our goal is to have students in class and on time as much as possible. We kindly ask for your support in reinforcing the importance of punctuality with your student. If there are any specific challenges or reasons for the tardies, please feel free to communicate with us so that we can work together to address any concerns.
Please note that tardies will reset at the beginning of each quarter.
